We just purchased our MDX 9\30\03 and recently found that if you have all windows UP then roll down one of the rear windows avery loud air thumping noise begins that REALLY hurts your eardrums until you roll the window back up, roll another window down or pull over ASAP. This happens at about 40-45 mph. When I try to isolate the noise I can't. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the car at all.
Has anyone had this problem or heard of it!!!! |

| It sounds like a helicopter, right??? It is a feature of this and many other cars.:D I've heard it has to do with the aerodynamics of the car. |

Yes that's right. WOW does it hurt the ears!!!!
The first time this happened it made me pull off the road, this doesn't seem right. I haven't heard about htis in any other type of car or truck. |

jtremblay,
I know this has been discussed before. I was aware of it before I bought mine so I wasn't too shocked. It is LOUD and annoying. Everytime this happens I think my eardrums are going to burst!! |

| JT new to this club, also have a B5 Passat with same problem which requires either the sun roof open or front window cracked slightly to cure this problem. It's the aeordynamics. |

| It's not NEARLY as loud as it was in my '59 Volvo PV-544! |

| We used to have a 4Runner, and it did it too. The 4Runner had a power back window, (like the old station wagons), and you could crack it to STOP the noise. Man, that was a great feature! |

| Its almost like water gulping out of a bottle...To minimize it, make a second opening. The tail gate window would be perfect but the other side rear window will work too. |

| That really scared me to for the first time. Only when roll down rears windows with the front closed, if I remember right I rolled the right rear down and left all the others closed and WOW did my eardrums hurt and thought there was a super serious mechanical problem. I guess it's the aerodynamics of the vehicle. |

Everyone who says they can live with the thump is LAZY and STUPID! This is a $43,000 car! It should not make such a pronounced irregular feel and sound.
I brought my MDX in 4 times and took 3 test drives with the head of service, who told me uponthe last visit that it was the gas tank.
I have two small children that sit right above where this tank sloshing occurs and it makes me very nervous.
Seriously, Acura's defense is in the wording "characteristic"...they have know about this since 01' - complaints started back then, by now new buyers should be told or Acura should fix it, soooo...
My question to all of you...when does a "characteristic" become a "flaw"?
I would be interested in your thoughts. Please respond.
Thanks. |

I am not sure I fully understand this one....... Any car that has only 1 wind opening (window) will make some noise. Some more than others. I know my Boxster is terrible, making it sound like the rear plastic window will fly out!
You could build in a deflector on each window, but it seems easier to open a small gap in another window. This one happens in most cars I've had....
Not sure on the "thump" issue, that sounds more like the gas tank thud???????? Guess I am Lazy and stupid, but I would trade the minor thump (IMO) for a free Nav upgrade (Figured we need at least 1 more Nav thread! ) |
