I guess I've been one of the lucky ones...all of the cars I have owned, not one of them has provided me with any major problems.

The key to this, keep up the routine maintenance and everything will be ok. I still use a 93 Acura Legend with 180k on it and I plan to keep using it until it falls apart, which may be a VERY long time from the reports I have been getting (I heard of a report of a Legend owner with 500k on their car!!! yikes!!).

my worst was an early 90's Chrysler LeBaron Turbo. Had it one year and it blew through 2 turbos.

I ditched it as soon as I could.

1988 Ford Taurus - many problems too numerous to detail (most were expensive big deal items)

1984 Nissan Stanza cost me $1100 on a single carburator repair:3:

Fords ... pick your model. Every one I've owned has died on me (well, except one which was killed early on in an accident.) Last one died at 44k on the clock. Started at only a couple weeks old with a dying engine ... dealer finally said it was a "bad connector". Then at 20k miles I had to break down and rebuild the front axle .... and paying nearly $300 a piece for the rotors and $150 for new manual 4x4 hubs really made me smile. Finally near 44k the tranny died. Game over.

I'm a fanatic as far as maintenance goes, so that made it more annoying. So far the Ody has been trouble free, so we'll see on the X. Some of the posts on the tranny is making me nervous, however.

My most recent new car experiences consist of 1 Ford, 4 Hondas, 1 Acura. Rated on the scale of 1 to 10, my experiences with the brands are: 1 = worst, 10 = best

Honda: average of 8 (would be higher but the latest - a CRV - has had severe corrosion inside the doors requiring replacement of a lot of expensive parts after only 3+ yrs - outside of warranty and Honda says tough luck were not reimbursing you).

Ford: 7 (no problems but low resale)

Acura: 3 (plenty of problems, poor customer service)

My experience has been that our last 2 Honda/Acura vehicles (the MDX and the CRV) have shown a marked decrease in quality from our previous Honda vehicles. The drivetrains have been great but body integrity has been lousy.

1979 Pontiac Sunbird

My Dad bought it for me (brand new), and he regretted it every single time I drove it (which was every day)! We knew something was wrong when the transmission had to be replaced before I had it one week. It was down-hill from there!! It was one of the few 5 speed, V-6 engines in those little cars, but all it was was trouble. The clutch was so hard to press, everyone else who drove it thought there was something wrong with it, I didn't know any better, it had always been extremely hard to press down to shift. One of the last problems, from an extremely long list, with this Lemon Quality Pontiac was when my fiance & I were driving back to college one night, and the headlights went out and never could/would come back on. We ended up following an 18 wheeler to try to get to campus, but a Sheriff pulled us over. Needless to say, he made us leave it where we stopped, and we had to hitch a ride to campus with (very fortunately) a friendly Grandpa.

This little car impressed me so much, that I STILL will never own an American made vehicle from the Big 3. But, at this time, I'm beginning to wonder about the X sitting in the garage, it's accumulating a laundry list of warranty issues, too. I guess we'll see.

Gotta be the new 1990 Ford 5.0 Mustang I unfortunately purchased just after college. In the short six months I owned it, it was in garage more than 2 months. Despite repeated attempts to get cashed in on lemon program, no luck. Car was a dud in every sense of the word and had me looking to trade-in within one month of purchase.

A sample list of just a few of the things I remember going wrong:

1) rack and pinion steering failed and was replaced (2 days diagnosis in shop, 1 week replacement in shop)

2) air bag deployed without reasons (4 days in shop)

3) 2nd gear synchronizer failed (2 weeks in shop)

4) huge scratch running down front left fender was present when I came back to finish deal and pick up car (1 week in shop, 1 more week to do it again).

5) Rattles everywhere that I tried to ignore, but asked them to fix while it was in shop at other times

A total piece of crap. So bad that I will NEVER own another FORD.

Pontiac J2000, 1982

It lasts only 35,000 miles, a piece of junk, probably that's why they called it "J" car...

tie between a 1971 Dodge Demon 340 & a 1981 Cutlass.

The Dodge was purchased new and I traded it in 10 months later with no 3rd gear & 2 burned valves. It was in the shop more than I drove it and Dodge wouldn't cover most of the repairs under warranty - saying that it was "driver abuse". I told them I "babied" the car because I was afraid of it breaking down! what a POC.

The Cutlass had computer problems from day one - (it was a company car). I had it in the dealer 3 weeks out of every month I drove it. After 18 months, I finally convinced the leasing company it was a lemon when they saw I had only 18 weeks of actual use!

Myself - Can't say I've ever owned a "problem car". My 1979 Honda CB750F motorcycle for whatever reason could not stop leaking oil on the valve cover. Sold it and bought a 1983 CB1100F that Honda said they "cured the oil leak problem". After 5000 miles it too was leaking....

My family, on the other hand, had no luck keeping any of their Fords healthy. 88 Taurus blown motor and tranny before 45K miles. 95 Windstar blown motor and tranny before 50K miles and power steering rack out earlier than that. Mid-90's Probe was a maint. headache. 94 Explorer had more problems than a chinese math book. So now they lease a new Explorer every 2 years and are driving a Denali.

Hi All:

___85 Black Merkur XR4Ti w/ the dual rear wing.

___The dealer saw it about 30 times in 3 months for rough idling/rough running/extremely poor mileage (12 mpg across Iowa one time :(). Fortunately, I purchased it used for just $11,000 and got rid of it with only a $1,500 loss. Loved the car for its amenities and features (heated cloth seats and mirrors!) but the engine was a nightmare ...

___Here is a similar XR4Ti:

1979 VW Scirocco. I bought not one, not two, but three trannies for it! Not to mention a host of other expensive items every few thousand miles.

What made it even worse was the abysmal attitude problem from VW corporate HQ.

'nuf said. Never again a VW.

But the closest would have 2 be the 1983 Mazda 323. Alternator problems.

1989 Nissan Maxima SE, it was the worst car I've ever owned. I never mainence the way I suppose to and I mess up the transmission at 183K. I change oil like every 15K, and always go over 100 in the car. Broke down on me. Nice car though.

I had a 98 Volvo V70 GLT that I sold to get into a 2001 MDX.

In the 2.5 years of ownership, the Volvo was at the dealer every 3 months (pain in the a$$) for some warranty covered work such as replacing burned out bulbs (4 total times), replacing the horn, replacing CD changer, replacing leather trim on door that bubbled off, repairing rear seat lowering mechanism, mysterious "check engine" light that dealer couldn't find anything wrong with and disconnected the battery to make it go away, as well as 2 flat tires within 2 weeks of each other. Got rid of it before the warranty ran out!

In 2.5 years of MDX ownership only scheduled maintenance has been done.
:2: :2: :2: :2:

Just say no to Volvo!

Friggin' Pontiac. I had two, actually. A 1980 Sunbird and a 1983 Firebird. I enjoyed the Firebird, but both cars were total POS's. :3:

Our family has had 9 Volvos over the years (since I was a kid, they've been a family tradition), and we've only had one really bad one, including the ones my sister and her husband have had.

I had a green '99 S70 AWD and it caused a heck of a lot of trouble; we lost a turbo (at six months old), a gearbox (same calamity...turbo got so hot it melted the gearbox...yikes! Three WEEKS in the shop  ) and a lot of other problems (electrical problems, coolant fluid system problems, etc.). Must've been built on a Friday...

Volvos are usually really good, but this one was just a stinker.

We traded it in after 13 months (and only a couple of repair days short of Colorado's lemon law- grr...), we usually keep cars a lot longer, for another S70 (this one black- my only complaint, I'll never buy another black car; beautiful, but a dirt/dent magnet), which we still have, and has been a great car! :D Nearly 80,000 miles on it and not a single problem! Only reason I got my 'X was the size of the Volvo's cockpit (see post on the topic), since I'm a big guy!

My 'X has been great, too...36,000 miles, so far, no problems, knock on wood... hope to keep it that way! :D

A Cadillac Eldorado. I got this after I won a new Ford Escort from the local radio station. I sold it the day after and traded in my Nissan on the Caddy. Problems and very expensive to maintain. :3:
