The college basketball game is my favorite sport to follow. I have had a lot of fun following Memphis and Georgia Tech in the past. Texas Tech with Bobby Knight is also a good time. I can not wait.

Pre-Season Top 25 to be released today:D

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/coll...ll/usatpoll.htm

Will reigning national champion Syracuse start the 2003-04 men's college basketball season as the No. 1-ranked team in the USA TODAY/ESPN Top 25? Or will the honors in the coaches' preseason poll go to perennial heavyweights Duke, Michigan State or Arizona? Could the Orangemen's Big East brethren at Connecticut be favored to keep the NCAA crown in the league?

Find out who starts the season on top when the first poll gets released today at 6 p.m. ET. :D

The season gets under way Nov. 13 with Wake Forest taking on Memphis, in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Marquette will face St. John's in the doubleheader's nightcap.

San Antonio will stage the Final Four April 3 and 5.

Yet ANOTHER season of watching the Blue Devils wipe the floor with the likes of GT.:2:

Actually I have no idea what GT is supposed to be like this year, but my contacts back a Duke have been impressed by some of the younger guys including Shavlik Randolph and Lee Melchionni. Have no clue what these guys arelike, but word is that they have good size and movement. Word is also that Duhon looks great having added a few lbs of muscle.

Let the 'Dookie' hating begin!

YES!!!!!

Glad to see another Blue Devil on the boards! My contacts at Duke Basketball Report say Duke looked amazing in the pre-season Blue-White scrimmage. Luol Deng is poised to be freshman of the year, and many of the others (Randolph, Redick, Thompson, S. Williams) have bulked up significantly in the off season. Duke will be a force to be reckoned with this year.
ghm2112
Yeah, cbarry, we'll have to stick together on this one since Duke is probably third only to the Yanks and Cowboys in terms of people hating them for their success (or in the case of the 'boys, past success).

I guess I should mention that I was a Dook hater in the years before I went to grad school there. Always thought of them as one of those white-boy poseur schools; like a BYU of the South.

5+ years in Durham showed me the errors of my way (I think).:4:

Go Devils (and ACC teams except the 'holes)!

I grew up in Chapel Hill, and (shame!) pulled for the Tar Heels. When I went to Duke undergrad, I was quickly transformed into a Blue Devil, and have been ever since!!!

Only 3 West Coast (AZ included) in the Top 25.

Are the Pac-10 and other western conferences really that inferior? Or does this poll reflect (like many others) the fact that the majority of voters are from/more familiar with the east and midwest conferences?

azfansinnc: try to catch a game at Cameron Indoor Stadium and see if you change your mind about ACC basketball. I realize you get it jammed down your throat with Duke, UNC, NCSU and Wake so close by, but the experience kicked the crap out of the PAC10 games I've attended (mostly Cal and Stanford).

Enjoy the season!

All of my schools play in respectable conferences (ACC, Big 12, and C-USA). Both Texas Tech and Memphis look to be competitve, not sure about GT since they lost Chris Bosch to the NBA:rolleyes:

Getting tickets for a game at Cameron is impossible! I'm not knocking quality basketball. Duke, and usually UNC, are definitely frontrunners in that category. I just have to boost the 'Cats.

The supposed east coast bias is an interesting phenomenon. If you live out west, it certainly feels that way sometimes even though the Pac10 has had multiple teams in the Sweet 16 the last few tournaments. On the flip side, besides the Pac10, what other major conferences are there out west? It's a big country, lots of real estate out west, yet so few people in comparison to the east & midwest.

All of you Dookies and members of the A-B-C club (Anybody But Carolina) have gotten a bit spoiled over the past few years while the 'Heels were on hiatus. But rest assured now that Roy is in town, things will be different this year!

Fewer students are around and Coach K HATES to see empty seats. Not sure when the kiddies head back to mummy and poppy in Connecticut, NJ and NYC, but here is the home schedule for December:

http://msn.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/2003/1104/1653829.html

Lousiville, Marquette, and Cincinnati are leaving C-USA for the Big East. The Big East, stung by the impending departure of three key members to the Atlantic Coast Conference, responded Tuesday by luring five schools from Conference USA.

Louisville, Cincinnati and South Florida accepted invitations to join the Big East in all sports. DePaul and Marquette, which do not have football teams, will join the conference in all other sports.

The five schools will begin play in the Big East in the 2005-06 academic year.
msu79gt82
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/colum...andy&id=1653569

The Big East winds up the big winner once the on-going conference expansion saga ends. After all is said and done, the Big East -- not the ACC -- will be the premier conference in the country ... at least when it comes to men's basketball.

That's right, the Big East's gains easily outweigh its losses on the court. Once the Big East is able to add the five teams it wants -- Louisville, Cincinnati, Marquette, DePaul and South Florida -- from top to bottom, the Big East wins out. Hands down.

Sure, the ACC will still have Duke, North Carolina and Maryland. But its additions of Miami and Virginia Tech next season and Boston College by 2005-06, combined with the current conference members, simply won't hold up against a new, and improved, Big East of 2005.
msu79gt82
http://espn.go.com/dickvitale/vcolu...-expansion.html

It's been a rough road in recent months for Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese. Think about how his football powers, Miami and Virginia Tech, said bye-bye to the conference and jumped to the ACC. Then there was the departure of Boston College, which simply amazes me (how in the world can a school from the Northeast run to the ACC like that?).

But Tuesday was a happier day for the Big East and Tranghese. The conference has added C-USA schools Louisville, Cincinnati, Marquette, DePaul and South Florida.

My kids grew up ACC fans and still are fond of the ACC, but we've lived in Texas for over 12 years now and they wanted a home "town" school (if you can call Lubbock's 500 miles away, home town).

PS: When we were watching the NIT championship game on TV the boys (I have 2 at TT) were "complaining" that we couldn't just cheer for Tech - we had to say which Tech.

Georgia Tech guard Will Bynum is now eligible.:1: Bynum hasn't been on the court for a game since Dec. 30, 2002, in a victory over Boston University. After transferring to Georgia Tech, he sat out the required two semesters while practicing with the Yellow Jackets (8-0). At Arizona, Bynum was known mostly for his offensive outbursts, like the 19 points in 23 minutes against San Diego State last season. He hit 4-of-8 from beyond the 3-pointer arc in that one, and made 35 percent overall in his eight games with the Wildcats. As a freshman, he started nine times and averaged 6.4 points, helping Arizona reach the regional semifinals in 2001-02.

The Wake freshman then steps to the line and makes 2 out of 3. What a choke on their own floor.

'twas a good game. I especially like the way Duke is playing D and crashing the O boards these days; good D is a Coach K trademark, but their rebounding (especially on O) has been weak. The Devils shot a pathetic 34%, so things would have been very different if they weren't getting 2nd, 3rd and 4th shots.

I don't know all the details but what I've heard is that Knight was at a off-campus salad bar and TT's prez came up to compliment him on his improved demeaor this season. Don't kid yourself - the media keeps a close watch on him and blows everything out of proportion! I KNOW that for a fact, due to an incident here in Houston his fisrt year with Tech. Granted he's made mistakes and plenty of them (he may be entirely in the wrong here) BUT the media is capitalizing on past mistakes - and that is wrong period.

His record has been sqeakly clean at Tech - he's deferred part of his salary due to not making the playoffs last year; and he paid for the student's seats at the first round NIT game in Lubbock last year.

Everybody wants to give everybody second/third/fourth/etc/ad nauseum chances in sports except for Knight - give me a break.
mullysalt
His actions speak for themselves to say that the media has created his problems is apologizing for his continued poor behavior. Sure the media dogs him every time his missteps but he brought that upon himself with his behavior not the other way around. I'm glad TT and the administration had the backbone to stand up to Knight.
