I'm not saying that the Toureg sucks but what were they thinking??? Contenders includes BMW X3, Buick Rainier, Cadillac SRX, Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Durango, GMC Envoy XUV, Infiniti FX35/45, Lexus RX 330, Mitsubishi Endeavor, Nissan Murano, Nissan Pathfinder Armada, Porsche Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg. I mean, RX330 is pretty good too.

Captain MDX,
Aye! This is strange. The Volkswagen Toureg finishes dead last in the C&D comparo...then Motor Trend names it 2004 SUV of the Year? Clearly a case of being "the best of the worst and the worst of the best."

Think back. The December 02 issue of C&D named the Toureg first!!! Isn't it weird?? Last year it's first and this year is last??? WTF:confused: |

Captain MDX,
Yes, how quickly we forget. Reminds me of the Janet Jackson song, "What have you done for me lately?" |

Anybody test drive one?
I did, liked it alot, but not as much as the MDX. Only 5 seats. Small cargo area. Somewhat complicated dash, but tasteful (as well as the balance of the interior). Little more trucky in the ride, but it is more of a truck too. V6 feels a little under powered, V8 is great, but pricey. |

| VW must have made the best offer to Motor Trend to participate in the "joint marketing agreement" that goes hand-in-hand with the SUV of the Year/Car of the year award. |

It sounds like MT did a good job at picking a winner.
The BMW. Nissan, and Infinity FX35/45 are overly biased for road performance.
The Buick, Cadillac, and Chevy are built by GM (need I say more)
The Pacifica is no more than a stylish wagon, not a SUV.
The Durango--give be a break. Have you ever driven a Durango?
Porsche, too expensive.
Mitsubishi, not expensive enough
The Armada may lack some sophistication (and good looks). Pure brute, however, must have put it on the short list.
That leaves the VW and the Lexus. My vote would go with the VW.
By the way, did they even consider the Pilot or MDX? |

Yet the GMC Envoy won a recent Motor Trend SUV of the Year. I'm afraid that award is not easily rationalized. Certainly damages the credibility of the "prize." |

Well, "dead last" out of only 4 very high end models in an article entitled "Big Box Sports Cars." The Porsche was picked over the Toureg in that article because of better road performance, but the print edition of the artilcle makes it clear that the Toureg should have the best off road performance of the four tested. |

Remember the MDX was MT SUV of the Year in 2001, and probably wouldn't be considered again until a major redesign. The Pilot is too plain vanilla (though capable), and more a variant of the MDX, to grab attention.
I figure whoever generates the most "buzz" at introduction gets the award that year. |

Some notable Car of the Year past winners:
AMC Renault Alliance
Chevrolet Vega (runner-up car that year was the Pinto)
Citroen SM
1974 Mustang II (the Pinto-based Mustang)
Renault Alliance
Chevrolet Citation
Plymouth Volare/Dodge Aspen
Is that a group you'd want to be associated with? |

Right on the heels of the "vaunted" SUV of the Year award, VW is exposed for misrepresenting the Touareg's towing capabilities in its television ads.
http://cbsnewyork.com/shamestories/..._303155456.html
Apprently the vehicle still has that tremendous tow capacity, but it can't tow a monster like the Airstream, as depicted in the TV ad. |

Maybe it would only be appropriate if Volkswagen ran a nice full-page ad in the next issue of Motor Trend thanking them for their award.:flush: |

Ah, but we are: 2001. Gotta take the good with the not-so-good. |
