Use fuel injector cleaner regularly? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have a 92 InfinitiQ45 and there has been a recommendation for years to use BG products 44K fuel injector cleaner.

Has anyone had problems with the injectors in the MDX clogging up? Is it unnecessary to use such a product in an Acura?

Thanks

It is not 'required'. But in your travels you may accumulate some contamination from a dirty station.
I have seen no info that says honda/acura is more prone to problems than others, in fact maybe less.
I put in a bottle of Techron at each oil change (5K miles) or Duralube fuel system cleaner which I saw was rated high on a study referenced under a similar topic about a year ago.

Like DaleB, I'm doing Techron the tank before a scheduled oil change. No one here has reported any injector issues (that I remember), but for a few bucks it's a cheap and worthwhile preventative maintenance. IMO.

Where are you finding the BG? That's the good stuff!

Techron and BG44K are the real deal. BG44k is more potent as well as some places offer a full BG44K cleaning (not just adding in the Fuel additive). There are also some very good systems such as the MotorVac system which completely cleans your entire fuel system, including the fuel rail.

I have not done any of this for my 03 MDX, but have used Techron in a 1998 vehicle.

I have used Gumout injector cleaner in several cars over the years, and it always helped rough-running. I use it as part of preventive maintenance in the X every 5000 miles or so.

I've noticed some knock/burn off while using techron. I would only notice it while under the hood and pulling throttle cable. Give it some juice quick on the rev, then it knocks as motor decellerates. This was gone after I burned the tank out. Runs great now, so not sure if it hurt or helped. Mine has always run super smooth. Bad experience with knock on my Q45 using Gumout. I would stay away from those cheaper brands that you would find at any Walmart. Costco usually sells a sixer of Techron for $10-. BK maybe overkill.

I've never seen the Techron Concentrate Fuel System Cleaner @ our local Costco. They have the ProGuard FI Cleaner here, though.

I'm not entirely clear on the difference betw them, to tell you the truth:

Yes worm, you're correct. It is the Pro Guard at Costco. That's the stuff I used.

Techron is the real deal. Most mechanics I have spoken to about this product applaud its value. they do not recommend the Gumout or STP at all. They say it does not do much at all. Make sure you use it the tank before your oil change though, not after your oil change. The contaminates it loosens will make their way into your oil and this is not a good thing on new oil. Really defeats the purpose. Come to think of it, my engine is running a little rough and I just might put some in. Thanks for the reminder.

I use Chevron mid grade gas. Since Chevron gas has techron additives, I'm assuming I wouldn't need to add a fuel injector cleaner like a bottle of techron every 5,000 miles. Am I correct?

I don't think what you get out of the pump is always consistent. I would still add a bottle on occasion. imraw's idea of adding 'before' an oil change sounds good.

From the Chevron website: "A bottle of Techron Concentrate Fuel System Cleaner, when added to gasoline according to the label instructions, results in an additive concentration roughly 10 times stronger than the dose in our gasolines."

I would say once a year is sufficient and definitely change the oil after running a tankful through.

I can say from personal experience that it cleans intake valves very, very well. Had the intake manifolds off my 911 changing out the engine wiring harness a couple of years ago and saw the before/after results. Intake valves were black and sooty and afterwards looked new ...shiny and bright.:2:

I probably should have also made a greater distinction between the Pro-Guard and the Concentrate.
The Concentrate is not something you would want to do much more than once a year as stated, but the Pro-Guard could be run more often as a preventative. Or before each oil change if you never use the concentrate.

Well, I added the Techron Concentrate last week to a full tank of gas and let me just say, no more rough idle. Runs like a champ!!!! In fact I am willing to be I picked up another 25-30 HP just from the one bottle (ha ha ha ha) just kidding. I always have been and will continue to be a Techron supporter. In fact, Toyota has some great fuel injector cleaner (even non-Toyota mechanics tout its ability to do the job) and some of the Toyota mechanics say to use the Techron instead of their product. If you have not run a bottle of Techron through your tank in the last 3-5K miles, you owe it to yourself, and your car, to do so. BTW, I am not a Techron (Chevron) stock holder. It is just worth the $7-9 you pay for it.

Directly from the Chevron website...

"Do I need to use TechronŽ Concentrate if I buy only Chevron gasoline?

If you're a loyal buyer of exclusively Chevron gasolines, your car very likely is delivering its best possible performance and operating at its lowest possible emissions. A bottle of TechronŽ Concentrate, therefore, is not likely to provide any benefits. However, if you sometimes purchase a lower quality gasoline, you should try TechronŽ Concentrate to quickly restore performance lost due to deposit accumulation.

Is TechronŽ just a more diluted version of TechronŽ Concentrate?

Not precisely. While both are polyether amines of very similar structure, each is optimized for its particular application. TechronŽ cleans engines and keeps them clean through regular use of a lower additive dose, while TechronŽ Concentrate provides a quicker clean-up through intermittent use of a higher additive dose."

Cycler, you da man (or woman) Great research on your behalf to provide excellent information for us. You deserve at least 10 points for that one.
thanks

Sounds like a rousing endorsement for using Techron Fuel Injector cleaner. Can one find that at places besides your local Chevron station?
ROTORRAY
..Costco. 4 bottles in a box. Good deal. About 1/2 price. I think it's $9, but may vary.
Warzau
Yup Costco has it , I use a bottle at every oil change.
DougC
Do they carry them at SAMs? My Cosco card's expired...
