I do not know if some of you have noticed this but , one of our members (MDXXXXX) is using a java application in his message to look at our PCs IP address, OS and ISP provider.
I would like to know why he is posting this information which I consider personal and confidential.
by posting/ displaying our IP address, It is very easy for a not so frendly person (hacker) to try to get into your PC and steal confiedential documents.
Look under the General Discussions-Argh!! Someone just keyed up my 1 MO MDX!
Please let me know what you think of this! |

| I do agree only the viewer could see his/her only IP address. No other memebers can see your IP. Except the moderator could check the IPs, which your PC is using while you were posting the message. |

I've seen that sig used on many forums and it usually results in at least one thread like this.
It's harmless... no one can see your info but you. |

| Thank you for clarifying my concern about displaying my IP address. |

| FYI, this is not a java applet either, just a dynamically generated gif (on the server side). Very harmless. |

I would guess it is just to show you how vulnerable you are to hackers when using the internet.:( |

| I was surprised to see that I was running IE5 when I could have sworn that I have auto upgrade on my computer. Then when I went to the MS site I tried to download the newest version and for what ever reason my computer won't do the download. I wonder if it has a virus? |

I don't know why would I need a reminder of what OS I have or which browser I am using, but I guess it's nice to know which dynamic IP my DSL assigns.
I also use software-based firewall that hides my comp's IP, my laptop uses Norton Internet Security, and supposedly traps all hacker attacks (and it catches 2-3 a day)
There are so many ways to gain access to one's computer - thanks to 'brilliant' Microsoft, do not keep any personal data on your HD. At least, update your Windows with patches regularly (Tools->Windows Update in your IE) - install at least critical updates. |

It's a unique address assigned to identify your personal computer's network that you use to connect to the internet.
If it is always the same, it is a 'fixed' IP address. If it is different evertime you sign on, it is a dynamic address.
Fixed IPs are more useful for small business or home network systems for assigning permanent IP addresses for other access points in your network.
It gets more involved than that, but most phone and cable companies use dynamic addresses for residential customers. |

| well, thanks! It proves to me how WELL my hardware & software firewalls work, real great! The OS is correct, the IE ver. is correct, but the IP address is for my service OUTSIDE the residence, ain't for my computer or hardware firewall!! :4: |

The IP address is your source address as seen by the webserver and is correct for the WAN side of your firewall. The OS and IE version is reported by the browser in the form of the User Agent line in the browser request.
For example:
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.0.3705; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)
None of it has anything to do with firewalls or security, this is simply the browser identifying what it is so the web page can respond appropriately if it has browser dependent content.
You might check the shields up test at grc.com if you want to test your firewall. |
