| I just got a new 04 MDX. Like most, I noticed that on the key fob remote, there should be a trunk release button like on the Acura sedans. I was wondering, if I get a remote from one of the other sedans with the trunk release button, and reprogram it to the MDX, would the trunk release work? Probably not, right? |

I've installed a few remote trunk lid release mechanisms. You can't just purchase an Acura fob which features trunk release. These conditions are required to make such an operation work.
1. For the lid to open on its own it has to have positive upward tension when the lock is released, this means when you turn the key or press the button or pull the handle on the lid, the lid pops upward a few inches, or all the way open if the tension is set high enough. The MDX trunklid does not feature sufficient counter-tension.
2. There needs to be a solenoid in the hatch connected to the lock release, either through direct linkage or steel cable. This is what I mechanicaly install to pop the trunk remotely.
3. This solenoid must be activated through the remote lock control receiver (or alarm if its an integrated alarm with trunk-open feature). The MDX receiver is not known to be manufactured with this feature, and if its not documented, it will be very hard to determine if this receiver has this feature (which wires, programming instructions, etc)
If you really want automatic trunk release and full opening function, as on the Lincoln Navigator, this is what I would do;
1. Have a custom alarm installation business connect a trunk lid solenoid to the latch control on the MDX hatch,
2.fabricate additional gas-charged strut supports to provide the extra push needed to partially open the hatch until the OEM supports can finish opening the hatch, (hatch will be much harder to close)
3. Install an independent remote operation unit (similar to an alarm unit, but contains no alarm functions, only mechanical functions, auto fuel-door opening, passenger door opening, window roll-up/roll-down, etc) and use the proprietary remote fob in tandem with your MDX remote.
It will cost several hundred dollars as it will be all custom work, the auxillary support struts taking the most time. But such is routinely performed and displayed at autosound competitions and conventions. |

great description bruce.
Another reason the MDX doesn't have a trunk release button is that on trunks, there is no release handle. If you are walking up to a sedan after shopping, you can't open the trunk from the outside without using the key fob. With most SUV's and wagons, you just unlock the doors and then open the hatch. |
