2001 SS MDX w/54K miles. Only minor issues so far (thud-fixed, loose driver seat-fixed), but overall, I am very pleased with the truck....it even seems to run better now than it did brand new.
In any case, I have noticed that the truck seems to idle a little rougher than it has in the past (normally silent and smooth at idle). There is now some faint vibration and some engine noise that were not apparent originally.
Any one know what this might be? Idle speed is normal (RPM's). Any known fixes?
Thanks ! |

There could be several causes. I know on one thread a member had removed the intake manifold cover and cleaned out passages inside. He claimed that cleared up a rough idle and occassional stalling.
There have been more recent topics on EGR valves and the EVAP by pass valve. |

I have an 03 Touring and also have had problems with rough idle.
It dosent seem to be as noticeable with the tranny in D. In N or P however, it's much rougher than a brand new car should be. ( I dont think it is a fuel problem, as I have tried regular and premium gas from different locations with no improvement)
I did take it into Baranco Acura (where I purchased it) here in Atlanta, but got the old "could not duplicate" song and dance. They also gave me the run around on several other very well known MDX problems : ie, Driver seat shifting, brake clunk, etc.
I didnt argue much when I picked it up, just decided never to come back. There are several other dealers in the Metro, so if you live in the Atlanta area, I would NOT reccommend Baranco's service department.
As for my rough idle, I have just been too busy to take it somewhere else the last couple of weeks. Hope to get it in by the end of the month.

I should mention the member who did the intake cleaning, had higher mileage on his X too, similar to you.
Here's the post. No one commented on it. Keep in mind he had the engine light coming on too, but everything cleared.
I commented under a similar topic that maybe this is a procedure that should be done on all X's after so many miles.
"Check engine light enlightenment
I have an '01 MDX with about 85K miles, when the check enginge light came on followed by the DTM-4 light after driving about 1-2 miles . I took it upon myself to try to diagnose the problem. I first started with a new air filter even though it only had a few thousand miles on it. Secondly, I took off the intake manifold cover and found that the air channels on the cover and gasket were plugged with alot of carbon (probably from EGR ). I carefully cleaned the channels with carburator cleaner, and various sized screwdrivers, being especially careful on the gasket. The damn car now runs like a top, and my fuel mileage went from about 20 to 23.5. I don't know if this is relevant to your problem, but the inspection is simple and free if you do it yourself. Good luck." |

I am a huge fan of DIY. I change my own oil, and will be going in to change my ATF and VTM as well.
I am not sure how to go in and change the air channels.
Anyone care to post on this so that we may all benenfit? I will PM the original poster as well.
Thanks! |

I hope you meant clean, not change. If I had to do it once during my car's midlife crisis I don't think it would be such a big deal.
If you remove the plastic cowling on the engine you will expose the intake manifold on top.
There are several bolts around an oval metal cover that can be removed. You may want to order a replacement gasket cover before you start.
I just know this information because I have a tech manual for the MDX, it does not look that difficult. But there is no procedure for doing this 'cleaning' outlined in the manual. Only what this owner did on his own which I do not find that unreasonable.
Perhaps there are dealer services involving cleaning the intake system chemically, and if done once or twice in the first 100,000 miles would make manual cleaning unnecessary. |
