If you were going to buy a child a system, which would it be? The PS2 or the XBOX ??? Pro's / Cons?? Thanks for any input.

Good question - I've been rolling this one around myself, except I've got young boys, so the GameCube is also in the mix. I've read that X-box is more targeted toward teens, and PS2 toward an older audience. PS2 has a lot more games out for it, but the X-box has some serious horsepower behind it.

Right now my kids live to play Zelda (the original) - now that they've completed it (after 18 months - we got our money out of that one!), they just go back and do the different chapters. So we may just stick with N64 this year, as they'll be getting Zelda's Mask of Majorca under the tree (shhh!)

I rec'd the ps2 for my 33rd bday (I think) and like it :)

Like ghost said, WAY more titles available for ps2 vs xbox, at least now. How successful has M$ been w/consumer electronics? Does the xbox have staying power?

One suggestion I have for you: at $50 a pop, it behooves you to rent the games first, from Blockbuster, before coughing up the dough and finding out they suck. Fortunately, one of the guys I work with has a 14 yr old kid, so he gets the hand-me-downs, which sometimes includes games I don't like, but more often those are the games I can't get past the first level
Robyjo
Yeah, this is a tough one. I would recommend the xbox because it is the beefier system with more goodies to boot, but like the wise ones have noted--PS2 has the games today. If you can wait or be patient as the market catches up, I'd say Xbox.

I understand M$ is losing $ on every box they sell, because they want to get it out there and nab market share...but I also heard that the gamecube had record sales with its introduction...

Rob

PS In case my secret santa is reading this, I wouldn't mind an Xbox or PS2... :D

The winner was the X-Box. Yes there are more games for the PS2 BUT at $50ea they better be quality games like ghosts kids play and enjoy. I have a PS1 and have a LOT of games for it ( like over 100 ) and out of all of them I may play a total of 10 of them. I got the kids the Xbox and got one for myself because I was so impressed with it. Very nice and you can even rip a CD on it and listen to it while playing. The reason I got the Xbox for myself is because I can have a portable DVD for the bedroom or office. I give the Xbox a 9 out of 10 rating .. im still getting used to the controllers but the graphics, sound , and system are awesome !!! ( Games - NHL Fever AWESOME / NHL 2002 - AWESOME / Star Wars - Very Good )

XBOX is definately a better system than PS2 if you want the performance. Graphics are awesom compared to PS2. Even more so when you display it on HDTV. Since Xbox comes with a hard drive, the games load much quicker than PS2 and you don't have to buy the memory card to save games.
I wasn't impressed with the DVD playing capability of the Xbox. Picture quality is simply poor. I have no comment on PS2's DVD playing capability since I have not seen it myself.
The controllers for Xbox seems to be quite big compared to others. I liked Xbox's controller over others for easier grip. Small children may have problem. There are smaller controllers available from other vendors.
I really recommend folks out there to see Xbox in HDTV. This will knock your socks out.

What's this Tech, the old bait-and-switch? You start off asking on behalf of your kids and end up with one yourself? And here I was feeling guilty for reading the thread and being interested in the XBox at 34 yrs old!

I got interested when I read a great review of the XBox in the Wall Street Journal. They also give it high marks and I wanted to pass on to you that they said the game "Halo" is so great they thought it alone justified purchasing the system. Well...I haven't bought myself a present this year, except for that MDX, of course!

Enjoy

And we thought only Acura crooks-dealers like to force unwanted add-ons. :(
As I am looking and looking for an XBox for my kid (c'mon, who am I kidding?? - my wife :) - for myself, since the kid is only 3-and-a-half), I cannot find a single REPUTABLE store nor online e-tailer who would seel just an XBox for $299.

They all bundle the XBox with numerous games and/or h/w accessories and start at $400+.

Only Costco tries to remain "honest" by not selling Xbox at all :)

But I'll get one!!!

Maybe Tim will offer them? :)

P.S. Tech, I guess, this gives my vote to an Xbox over PS2.

whitemdx, I still use my regular DVD player on the big screen but you may want to try to use an S-Video cable for your X-box when watching DVD's as it will make a world of difference.

Alvin, Thats too funny .. im 33 and I love the sports games ( NFL & NHL ) Bait and switch?? or " Cmon dad let us play OUR game "

Vip9, Got mine at Best Buy for 299.00 - no forced options !!! Get your games at Circuit city - they are all 10% off ( around 44.00 ea )

Hi All,
I am 53 and still enjoy playing video games! In fact thinking about an X Box if I can find one. Does anyone remember the first video game "Pong"? How about "Intellivision"?
octavian
Well, Xmas is over and I am curious how we all did. I settled for GameCube.....it is the third iteration of Nintendo and my kids like the controller better than XBox, tho it is hard to go wrong with ANY of the Big 3!

And, yes Ken, I played Pong in college and was quite good at it, but, sigh!, my skills have eroded and my son routinely kicks my butt at everything electronic.

I still nail him in Foosball and pool, however, heh heh heh..;)

I finally took a plunge (thanks to consoles' price war and my kid's birthday) and purchased an Xbox. Should be here any day now.

Well, to put any doubts to rest, the console is a birthday present for my 4-year-old son :D (I also sell bridges, anyone interested? Let me post in Classifieds)

I am looking for a first-hand recommendation on the first game that a 4-year-old BOY would enjoy playing and learning his 1st steps in the video-game world

I have narrowed it down to:
Halo,
2002 FIFA World Championship Soccer,
Strip-On-Demand 2002 Playboy bunnies...

Oops, that's my list :)

Well, Munch's odyssey looks interesting and so does Rallisport and/or Gotham Racing.

Impatiently waiting your recommendations.

vip9,
My brother has the XBox, and he has Fuzion Frenzy. It's a really fun little addictive game. Even my wife, who doesn't like video games loved it. It has little tasks that you have to complete an compete against others.

I think your kid will love it.

I just bought a PS2 last year and this is what I remember from the buying decision -- if you've got younger kids or you don`t want or need the death and gore, stay away from XBOX. It is geared toward the teens and adult market who want to have as much action and violence as possible. There are also many more titles on PS2. My kids are 10 and 7, and not particularly interested in Mortal Combat, etc. so PS2 was a perfect choice.
ghost
I agree with Remydog - PS2 has lots of titles, and seems to have a lot more age-appropriate material for youngsters (mine are 7 & 11) - my younger one plays Sly Cooper & Harry Potter, the older is into the sports games and Tribes, a Halo-like mechwarrior game.

I'm guessing Microsoft will merge XBox and DVR technology in the near future, so holding off on Microsoft probably isn't a bad idea.

And GameCubes are now $99, same price I recently paid for GameBoy Advance SP.
remydog
both of my kids love Sly Cooper. They also like the motocross with the ATVs.

They have the Harry Potter, which they play from time to time, but it doesn't get the same enthusiastic response as other games.

I should also add that my kids aren't fanatics about this stuff. They play once a week, if that. Same with their Gameboys, which they primarily use to keep busy during a road trip, but not at all around the house.

They'd rather go non-interactive with Sponge Bob, Invader Zim, Fairly Odd Parents and whatever other crxp is on Nickleodeon. Drives me nuts. I'd rather they play the game. Although they do get into some pretty crazy behavior when they're using it.

I hate to answer a question with a question, but what games do you plan to play? That's the most important question. If you have a bunch of small kids, you might want to consider Nintendo. If you have older kids or if you want to play games online, you might want to go with the Xbox. If you don't know what games you want to play, then the PS2 is a safe bet since it has the most titles. Note: I have a PS2, an Xbox and a Nintendo in our house, so I'm indifferent. My son loves the Nintendo and he couldn't be happier. Since the PS2 has the most titles, there's always something new and interesting to play. However, if the same title exists on mulitple platforms (i.e. Xbox, PS2 and GameCube), the Xbox has the advantage of arguably having the most powerful hardware. If you plan on playing first person shooters, Halo (and hopefully Halo 2 next spring) on the Xbox is worth the price of admission by itself. YMMV.
Jim03MDX
Don't ask me, but according to my 11 year old son - PS2 (and he should know :) ). I happened to ask him a few days ago if he had any interest in getting an XBOX (a couple of his friends have them) and he said no, that he liked the PS2 we have better.

personally I love both of them, HALO in the MDX is insane with four people going at it,

Its all personal preference if you can buy both switch em out from time to time.

Any choice you make is good they both have a wide variety of games and mostly the same games. Whatever you choose
you will have fun, just dont drive while your playing;

My brother has PS2 and I have the XBOX and I would not buy the PS2. You need to ask yourself how much your going to play with the console and then decide what games you want. If most games are on the PS2, get the PS2. If most are on the XBOX, get the XBOX. Someone mentioned HALO and it is one of the best, and most addicting games I have played. Splinter Cell is also another great game. Good luck with the decision.
crmsnidol
I would and have chosen the PS2. It has many more games for kids, the controllers are better for all types of games and easy enough for a small child to use and backwards compatible with the 2,000+ PS One games out (of which there are hundreds just for kids).

If you want streamlined online play and more adult-oriented games, the XBox has it with better graphics and sound. The caveat is that the XBox doesn't have as many highly rated titles and few that are exclusive to it. HAlo is the one everybody mentions and is the only one I know of that's exclusive (though now on the PC too).

Check IGN.com and gamespot.com for sections with reviews on both consoles. IGN in particular, lets you sort by review score and genre to help make better purchasing decisions. I would also suggest a weekend rental for both consoles and some choice games to help decide.

I have a 5501 PSX, a PSOne with the LCD screen, 2 Dreamcasts, a GameBoy Advance SP and a PS2. I'm currently playing Medal of Honor Rising Sun on the PS2 and Tony Hawk Underground on the GBA SP.

I probably should have said this before. If you are buying for yourself, then pick the machine that has what you want. The X is considered better for addults and teens. If for your kids, and you doubt you will spend more than a few minutes on the thing, then they should probably drive the choice. Chances are that they have played other games at other kids' homes and they probably know what they liked. Ask them what they want. Also, if your kids are like mine in age, then by the time they want the more advanced system, all systems will be much better than they are today and you wont care as much that you dropped 200 a few years earlier. Some will jump in and ask what about the library of titles you now have? Well, you won't be throwing away the other console and the kids have probably grown out of those games, anyway.

Here are two games recently reviewed in WIRED. The first is a combo beauty pagent and first person shooter, with an exellent array of weaponry.

The Maximum Gamer is for those of you that would rather do your gaming vicariously. :)

The reviews are excerpted below:

quote:

A game that's being considered both hot and new by experts is Tom Clancy's Junior Miss. In this exciting first-person shooter you are Savannah Montgomery, an 8-year-old Mississippi girl who has been registered by her mother in the Southern Regional of the Little Miss Jr. Miss Pageant at Ole Miss. Armed with a vast array of weapons and accessories, you ensure victory by taking out the other contestants without getting caught. It's so lifelike you'll swear you really are an 8-year-old girl in a beauty pageant! The best feature: You can switch back and forth between the mother character, who is equipped with a special Shriek Ray, and the daughter character, who can control wind by batting her heavily made-up eyelashes.

Another hot new game for 2004 is Maximum Gamer for the PC. In this role-playing game, you are Todd Kellman, a world-class cyberathlete from the US. (Japanese and European versions are pending.) Gamers experience all the thrills of sitting in front of a computer screen as Kellman sits in front of his computer screen controlling the destiny of a fully rendered, computer-generated nerd sitting in front of a computer screen. This one was really popular, attracting crowds of attendees waiting for a chance to play. Or to watch somebody play. Or to watch somebody watch somebody play.

I played the Japanese "Prologue" version of Gran Turismmo 4 last night for a few hours on the PS2 and it is amazing! Tight controls, beautiful graphics and a crazy selection of cars. One of the vehicles open in Arcade mode is a Honda Odyssey! Strange circling an oval track looking for top speed in a minivan but this game has always been about the realistic driving experience with "attainable" vehicles. The game is very playable even if you don't know Japanese but the speedo is in KPH which is a bit disconcerting for a "non-metric" driver. The full GT4 comes out next year and is worth the price of admission in getting a PS2!

I've also been playing Need For Speed: Underground. A lot of fun but very different from a GT-style game. If you're into imports and hip-hop music you'll love NFS:U.

Have any of you played the new the "Prince of Persia" game? Is it age-appropriate for an 11 year old?

The martial arts part isn't a problem (he's a TaeKwonDo black belt)but I do want to avoid the graphic violence they put onto the older teen games.

Any other suggestions for hot PS2 games?

PoP is pretty good and not too graphic. It's certainly not at the level of GTA, True Crimes or Manhunt.

For an 11 year old I would suggest Need for Speed: Underground (If they like driving games), NHL Hitz Pro (if they like Hockey), Madden 2004 (If they like football), Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando (if they like platformers), Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 or THPS: Underground (if they like skatboarding), SSX3 (awesome extreme snowboarding) and NBA Street Vol 2 (basketball - not sim-like)

Thanks Crimson, THPS:Underground is definitely on his list, he checked it out from Blockbuster a few weeks ago and now he has some good scores on his card, so he wants to pick it up again. Same with NBA Street - plus he's learning to talk jive...

We have Madden 03 from last year, but there's so much stuff you can do in that he'll be playing that for awhile. PoP has some great reviews on the game sites, so that's probably on the list.

How does NFS:U differ from the GT games (which are a bit too out there for me...)

NFS:U is a far more accessible game for a kid. It's got what game reviewers call an "arcade style" experience rather than a driving simulation like Gran Turismo. You can just pick up and drive without any kind of learning curve. It's a lot of fun to play and has a cool soundtrack (hip hop). Another fun driving game although it's up to you whether you want to promote the activity of crashing is Burnout 2. One of the game modes is Crash where the object is to cause the greatest pileup in $$ by plowing into intersections and freeway merges. You'll play it when the kids go to bed. It's definitely a guy game.

I received a PS2 for my birthday. Didn't expect it. I love it. The new 3rd generation system will probably be out sometime late next year or early '06 as they hope to have a working unit by March or at least May for the big electronics show.

PS3 will use a Blu-Ray drive for an HD experience. They haven't said yet whether it will be backwards compatible with CD and DVD based games. The BR drive will have discs that can read 50 GB of data. It will also use a non-proprietary format for a wider variety of games to be written for it.

Ive heard that the PS2 has a 300Mhz processor , whilest the X-Box has a 700 Mhz processor, so that would make the X box Faster ,but

I just modded my xbox... and seriously... it just takes the xbox lightyears ahead of the PS2. There are so many programs out for the XBOX w/ a mod chip it is just unbelievable. You can make your XBOX into a media center and play all your pictures, movies, music, anything that you download. You can put a bigger HD in there and copy the games that you buy to your HD so that you don't have to risk scratching your disks. Very useful if you have kids. That is the main reason I bought the XBOX. If you have more questions about modding the xbox please visit:

I've had both Playstations so I'm used to the layout of the controllers which makes me feel like I have better control over sports games. I've played both systems and I like the PS2 better for some reason. But I usually only play sports games. Somebody gave me a copy of Half-Life and there was a lot of pausing and reading my the system. Not sure if that's an issue or not.

If you want to play online, it's free with PS2. XBox makes you pay through a subscription. But Microsoft is supposedly able to crack down on people who cheat by putting their systems on steroids. They theoretically can't get online.

If I was buying a system today I'd get the Sony PSP. That way I wouldn't have to tie up a TV or alienate myself in the basement. Plus it has wireless built in. One downside is you have to buy different games and there's not a ton of them available yet.

You said what to buy today...if you were waiting a while I'd go for the third generation systems coming out later this year.

:2: I know. Hey it is a good product no matter who makes it. And that is my point. I still have a Windows machine that I built myself at home but I use it exclusively for gaming.

I went back to Apple last year because I was spending an inordinate amount of time protecting, cleaning and upgrading my machine. With my crazy schedule, I do not support a product that requires high maintenance (hint: bought an MDX :)) You will understand my frustration when I was working on my brand new PC with Pinnacle Studio 9. About 5 hours and 20 minutes into the project, Pinnacle crashes!! I lost all my edits over hours. The day after I switched. I was not going to spend hours redoing my work and ridding my machine of crap. As you can tell, I still seethe from my experiences :D

But, of course, its fun to make jest of Microsoft. They try so hard to copy a operating system. You have to give them credit for that :p But in gaming Microsoft rules! No other format comes even close. I love them to death for video game prowess.

Pinnacle 9 might be swiss cheese but your analogy seems hilarious in light of the fact that I'm part of a group that manages over 27,000 PCs in our organization. Even if I give you examples from one day it will take me hours to explain and be huge waste of your time.

My decision is not based on one software crashing on one Windows machine. I manage systems architecture for a medical center where our jobs depend on stability, security, and productivity. We evaluate systems' integrity in ways you can't even imagine.

Besides gaming, I have not found a redeeming point to the Windows operating system in my 16 years of IS management. The reason behind OSX's success is not Apple. Its Unix which all of us geeks love and is the best operating system to date when it comes to solidity and performance. You'll be surprised at the list of super geeks that have recently made the switch to Apple because of the same reasons I list.

Like I said, this will be pointless discussion which I can carry on in extreme technical detail that'll bore you (and me) to death but I love Microsoft's progress in gaming. Apple lets me be productive without fear of viruses, spyware, system crashes, and driver incompatibilities. That's all that there's to it.

I'm sure if your MDX crashed on you at least once a week making you restart on the road and stranded you one day in the middle of nowhere one fine day, you'll switch to a new automaker. And it won't be just the last incident.

PS - we're still a PS2 household; latest cool game is Burnout 3 - in which you rack up points depending on how much $$ in damage you can acquire by running into downtown traffic. (good to take out busses and ambulances). Great for developing young value systems...

If you like the Burnout Crash mode the best, Burnout 2 is better for young kids. In 3, you can only open new intersections after winning races in the World mode. In 2, you got a new intersection after each one you earn gold in. In one sitting I opened 25 new intersections. Defnintely a "guy game" but easy enough for little kids to pick up. I currently have a modded x-box with about 45 games on it. I simply bought the chip for about $30 and installed it. First time i tryed to install it I ended up frying my motherboard. Didn't even think about trying it on my second x-box that i bought right after. My brothers friend installed it for me on my second one.
Before X-box came out, i read about these mods that are available to the xbox. I now rent games and copy them to my 120 G HD. Playstation graphics are still sort of boxy to me. Xbox is way better then playstation because its more powerful, better mods and better games. IMHO...

In 2, you got a new intersection after each one you earn gold in. In one sitting I opened 25 new intersections. Defnintely a "guy game" but easy enough for little kids to pick up. Well, he was a young kid when this thread started three years ago! Now he's 12 and smokes me in any video game we play. He's unlocked most of the countries in the 2 weeks we've had the game. I can still beat him in chess though, maybe for another year or so...

The only thing about modding an XBOX is you can't play XBOX Live online. Microsoft checks the bios when you log in and if it detects any changes to the system, you are banned. I wanted to mod my XBOX, but would rather play online games instead (Halo2 online is pretty awesome).

:2: I know. Hey it is a good product no matter who makes it. And that is my point. I still have a Windows machine that I built myself at home but I use it exclusively for gaming.

As you know, I'm a PC guy. I'm looking at computers and my buddy suggests I get an iBook. I'm actually interested. OMG ! What's happening ? The only problem is I really want to be able to run Flight Simulator 2004, which I can't run on my current 5 year old machine. My video card can't handle DirectX 9.

That was the problem I faced. And I did try gaming on Linux and Mac and it sucks. I love Flight Simulator. And I've wasted many, many hours of my life on Need for Speed Underground, Diablo 2, and Civ 3 :D Even though my 17" Powerbook has the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics processor with 128MB of DDR SDRAM and 1GB RAM, I close it and head for my custom made gaming PC when I want some gaming. No comparison.

But for work the PB is very satisfying because its turned out to be very low maintenance and I have always loved Unix. I hated Linux because I could not run Office (yes, another good MS product :)), Macromedia Studio and Adobe Suite.

If you want a gaming machine, build your own. I'm telling you the quality will be astronomically better than one from a vendor where they cut corners on everything for cost.

Thats true you cannot play on XBox LIVE! but you can still play the Xbox online games against other players online. This is the app that let's you. http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/

There is also a PS2 version but I haven't checked that out and it only works with non DNAS older titles. The Xbox mod is better in that respect. My PS2 is modded and had a 120GB HD with 30 games on it right now - of which I play 2.
