When I was a the dealer the other week I made mention to him that my X was shifting hard between 10 mph and 20 mph. During rush hour in Atlanta ,and elsewhere I am sure, you creep for miles and end up in this speed zone. They checked my transmission but could not determine anything wrong. He recommended shifting down to D4 when this situation happens for prolonged periods of time. I have tried it and it does seem to help a little but just wondering if anyone has tried this?

D4 only keeps the transmission from shifting into 5th gear. At any speed below which your X normally shifts from 4th to 5th (35-40, maybe?), there's no difference between the two positions. I normally put 'er in D5 and go.

I usually slip it into D4 if the going gets very slow for a prolonged time. The only 'danger' is forgetting to put it back. Not likely to cause any harm, but will really suck the gas when you hit the freeway!

This sounds like a - let's tell him something and hope it goes away response from the dealer.

I've been in the situation with traffic going in the 30 to 45 mph range where the transmission seems to shift from 5 to 4 to 5 a lot. Couple of times I just put it in 4 to stop it, X seems just a touch quicker moving in and out of traffic. Got a friend with an X and he leaves it in 4 for all his in town driving. My 4 to 5 shifts are so smooth I don't notice them and I doubt there's a real problem, but. Shifting back to 5 on the hiway is the other concern, the tach tells the story though, 70 mph is 2000 rpm.
