Well...it happened...at 49k.
I was driving with my wife and child and I noticed that the tranny began to slip in and out of gear. It happened quite frequently between 3rd and 4th.
I dropped my family off with my mother and proceeded to the dealer. Luckly, the X made it.
I got a call later on that evening and they told me they found the problem and that I would need a new transmission. They needed to order the tranny, and that it would take about a week to do (with the holiday and all), all under warranty. They provided me a rental car (Jeep Liberty).
Most will remember that I purchased this vehicle, certified, about a month ago. Since my 02 X is in the shop, I also having them add the shims to the struts, per the TSB ("Creaking noise from dash or front struts"). I gave them a copy of the TSB so that they can't contest it.
Bad tranny...strut noise, blower motor managed to get some leafs in it, bad motor mount.....hmmmm....should I be worried that I bought a lemon?? Luckly, I bought the extended warranty.
BUT, I have an interesting question...
If the ORIGINAL owner did not take care of the X (scheduled maintenance, etc.), will Acura STILL honor the extended warranty for items that fail because the previous owner didn't maintain it??

That is the whole point of buying a certified vehicle. Acura has certified that they have inspected it and will honor the warantee items.
Now if you bought from your neighbor it might be a different story but I am not sure how important maintenance records are for warantee items. |

They are only important if they ask to see them. Best to have them I would say, although dealer service will be in the computer, at any dealer, by VIN#. Prefer my own copies. |

You are covered.
The certification is your warranty.
It is like buying a new car.
With a certified car, as far as warranty work is concerned, you are the original owner.
Having said that, you should ask for a print out of the work done on your car by the dealer.
All warranty work will be recorded by VIN number.
Seems like a lot to go bad at only 49K miles.
Post what you find - maybe this car has had a lot of work done to it.
Could be a lemon - on other hand if a lot was done, everything is new!
But my experience has been, if there was work done in the past, it probably is a lemon.
While the dealer will honor the certification, reliability might be a problem.
If you find a lot of prior warranty work, I personally would try to get out from under this car, a lemon. Just wouldn't't feel safe, just wondering when the next break down will be.

I take it that the Federal Lemon Law doesn't apply to used vehicles, certified or not, extended warranteed or not?
Anybody know? I just don't feel like looking up a lot of fine print, perhaps someone has had to look it up? |

Here is a summary of the Federal law with extracts for each state...this is why we always ask new members on the forum to enter their location on their signature...it makes things so much easier..
Anyway, after typing in "Federal Lemon Law for used cars" into Google I got this :

I did do a print out of the past repairs/maintenance and everything appears to be in order. Nothing usual.
In retrospect, I think my X is fine. After some research on the tranny, it appears to fail (if it does) around 40-50k. Other than the tranny and engine mount, all of the other things have been documented with TSBs.
As JeffK pointed out, everything will be new! The defective items will be new, and hopefully, redesigned from the original, faulty design.
I'll keep this site updated with the progress of my X.
Thx for the info. |

Hi Mando:
___Not to take away from the new tranny as you sure deserve it but the tranny housing is a reused part. I believe the guts are rebuilt or new which is what you are really after anyway. Damn these practically Chrysler designed tranny’s.

Yep...I know that the housing is reused...but the innards are new (at least most of it is).
I just got the X back yesterday...rebuilt tranny and strut shims installed....life is VERY good!!!
Tranny and suspension are both rockin solid! But, now, my navi code (anti-theft) doesn't work...arrggghh...need to go back to the dealer I bought it from.
I will post updates if problems occur.
Ciao! |
