| Any suggestions? I really don't want to get an expensive one since she does have a tendency to lose things, as 9 year olds do. |

| Just get a CD player based MP3 player they are cheaper, than any HD or memory based mp3 player. I know rio still has some out there thought they are moving towards memory only player. |

Is she planning on ripping her CDs or has she found itunes yet? At 99 cents a pop, you can run up a bill on there pretty fast.
With the low price of memory these days, they are doubling the memory on most MP3 players every time you turn around, so you should be able to get a 64k or 128k pretty cheap now. I've heard there are 1GB flash ones right around the corner, if they aren't here yet.
The jukebox type are also going down in price since there are always better ones coming out. You can probably pick up a 5-10 GB jukebox for much less than the state-of-the-art, but I hope your 9 year old doesn't have 100 cds yet. I have a 20GB Nomad, and it's only half full, with 150+ cds. |

| Santa - I have a Rio S50. Very small, comes with a protective case and belt clip, takes a real beating, and is fairly cheap. I've seen them below $100 and Rio recently had a $20 rebate on the 128MB model. You can add SD or MMC cards for up to 640K. ROM is also upgradable for more memory. Headphones that come with it are cheap, but who cares as most people use their favorite ones among multiple devices. |

My 11 year old is on his 2nd MP3 player. The first one I bought was a D-Link for about $100, 32MB memory, held about 12 songs. It really stunk, very poor software, would often just flake out. That was about 2 years ago.
I bought him an I-River for his birthday this year; it's a great player. 128 Mb, easy to use, supports folders, also has FM and voice recording, and line-in recording. Well-designed software, your daughter might need help at first, but, being a kid, she'll pick it up in no time. It retails around $150, but there will certainly be rebates around Christmas - I've seen a $50 rebate, meaning you could get it for around $100.
If you're good, she'll let you use it sometimes! :) |

| I took a look at the I-River at Circuit City. It looks pretty affordable. |

Don't know about some of the others but I can vouch for the Samsung 128MB Yepp. I used it at the gym for around a year before I got my ipod. It was a great little mp3 player that certainly took its share of drops.
Totally forgot about it until I read your thread. And, hey, it still works after 3 months in my desk drawer. |

You'll definitely be World's Greatest Dad (I know, you already are).
We have the iFP-380T, it's a great design. One caveat - the Sennheiser earphones are high quality, but the black foam covers they put on are really hard to find against the ebony interior! They disappear too easily - why don't they sell packs of those things?
Another down side: now he overrides my impeccable taste in music in the MDX cabin (currently loaded: Thick as a Brick) with his own tunes! :D |

Wow! I can't bring myself to shop on Black Friday, but what a great deal!
And, of course, now it's a business expense - good going! :) |
