I thought I would post these for comparison. Very hard to take pictures of, much easier to see in person. Look in the bright reflections. Very Impressionistic.

| I'VE WORKED IN A BODY SHOP,OWNED A SHOP,AND THER'S A STRONG POSSIBILTY THAT THESE PANEL[S] WERE REFINISHED: ORANGE PEEL OCCURS WHEN THE REFINISHER DOES,NT USE ENOUGH PSI [PRESSURE]IN HIS SPRAY GUN:OR SOMEONE IS USING ARMOR-ALL OR SOMETHING WITH A SILICONE SUBSTANCE IN IT NEARBY: THESE PANELS CAN BE WET SANDED WITH 1000-1500 GRIT [SUPERFINE] PAPER, AND THEN POLISHED WITH A FINE POLISHING COMPOUND [BUFFER] WASHED AND THEN MUST BE COATED WITH A CARNUBA CAR WAX:GO SEE THE SERVICE DEPT, AND COMPARE THE FINISH WITH OTHER MDX'S: MAKE THE DEALER DO THE BUFFING AND DETAILING, AND GIVE YOU A CAR TO USE WHILE ITS BEING DONE: IF YOU DON'T LIKE WHAT THEY TELL YOU: ASK WHEN THE FACTORY DISTRICT SERVICE MANAGER FROM HONDA/ACURA WILL BE HERE? I KNOW THEY COME AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH: GOOD LUCK! LET ME KNOW HOW YOU DO: OR IF YOU NEED ANY OTHER INFORMATION: GJM4855: NEW YORK |

| Thanks for the info. The orange peel doesn't just appear in places on certain places, however. The entire vehicle looks this way. |

| My paint looks the same way - everywhere. You don't notice it at a distance, only close up like these pictures. |

| If its any consolation, I was sitting at a traffic light yesterday next to a black ML55 AMG ($66K) and its orange peel paint was clearly visible without being too close. I don't think we have it too bad. |

The only real orange peel that would concern me is that caused by rust. |

| When I brought up the orange peel issue with our salesman he said he thougt it was due to the fact that lead is no longer added to the paint mixture. Any possibility this is true? |

I inquired with a private party about painting my fender flares. At first glance at the MDX...he pointed out the orange peel and suggested color sanding, buffing and wax before I put anything on the car. Mentioned it was completely unacceptable for a $40K car. I'm taking the "chariot" to a quality paint and body shop for a second opinion. Bottom line...most of us don't know what to look for...but the pros know the difference between a quality and substandard paint job.
It's all about what the end consumer is willing to accept and raising the bar accordingly. There's nothing wrong with demanding a quality product. ;) |
