After reading all the posts and perspectives on octane preferences I thought it would be interesting to actually take a poll to determine the percentage of owners who use Regular, Mid-Grade, or Premium Octane Ratings. I couldn't keep count in all the postings.
I understand that the rating vary somewhat by location, but for the purpose of this poll, let's use the following breakdown.
Premium=91-94 Octane
Mid-Grade-88-90 octane
and
Regular=85-88 Octane
Also, I understand that we sometimes vary the gas we use....but generally assume whatevery gas you would typically use 70% of the time or better.
By no means am I asking about perspective on which is best. Goodness knows, enough bandwidth has already been taken on that topic. I am more interested in general usage. |

I mistyped in my above post (it is correct in the poll however). Please assume Regular to be 85-87 octane.

I've been running regular only for well over a year. No knock, no performance difference, no issues.
Save yourself some money.

Car & Driver had an article a while back explaining and testing (dyno) different types of cars with different Octane gas.
Car&Driver Octane Article
The manual for a 2004 MDX recommends 91 octane for best results, i'm not sure if its the same for the previous years. |

So far only 93 octane here. Will probably start weaning off it and down to a lower level in the near future .. just wanted to get it off to a good start.
FWIW, down here we have more flavors of gas than we know what to do with. There's:
Economy = 86
Regular = 87
Mid = 89
Super = 91
Premium = 93
Ultra = 94
..and a few around here even have a triple-digit flavor ... and you can pick it out by the super-cool brite blue pump with go-fast racing stripes. Just what every granny and her 90ft Caddisled needs ... jet fuel. :rolleyes: |

Not a bad article, with real world tests to back it up. If you have some doubts, sounds like middle grade would work just fine in the MDX while saving you money. For towing or hard driving, maybe top up with primo on those days. Burning 87 should not be a concern when just bopping around town, I use it a lot during those times, and can not detect any real 'seat of the pants' differences.
Modern engines like ours should have minimal deposits unless you simply do not maintain your engine. So I do not see a big difference as the miles pile up either.
And to those who think they should pay more for gas because it is a luxury vehicle, there are luxury vehicles out there meant to run on regular. It is only an octane number, has nothing to do with quality, unless you are concerned about not getting 'enough' additives. Lots of threads posted on that subject here. |

I definitely felt a difference in freeway merging and similar acceleration with my MDX when I tried switching to regular unleaded. I wonder what effect altitude or temperature may have. I live in Salt Lake City and regularly drive up to Park City, and this was in the fall as the weather began to turn cooler.
In any event, the savings in gas prices weren't worth it. I switched back after a couple of months. |

But the station has only two underground tanks, right? One for 86 and another for 94. Everything in between is just a mixture of different ratios in the pump :D |

Hi Ceenit:
___This of course has been discussed a thousand times and if they made 81 Octane Un-regular for $0.80/gallon, I would probably purchase that and still get better mileage in the X then most receive in their midsize and in many cases compact cars ;) What’s the point of using Premium except for flushing money down the stations drain while watching the pump’s $ digits go up and up and up …
___Well, there is Manus1980 who needs 91 Octane in his X when he’s doing his best ETA in the quarter but I surely wouldn’t want to own someone else’s X let alone mine after it has been through that kind of torture a few times in its life. Would you?

| Wow! It's nice to be in good company. I've generally used mid-grade for average driving and switched to premium when I was driving under tougher conditions. Seems to work well. |
