| A question from a maintenance novice: According to the MDX owner's manual, my first service is due at 7500 miles and includes an oil and filter change. Two people (the salesman and one of my friends who is quite an auto enthusiast) have told me that I should have just the oil and filter changed prior to that time. I have 4200 miles on it now. Should I take it in for an oil/filter change now, or go with the owner's manual and wait until the 7500 service (either way, I know it goes in at 7500 miles). Any advice? |

| Check your manual. It is clear that the oil MUST NOT be changed prior to the first scheduled service interval. Severe conditions require a change at 3750, normal conditions at 7500. The filter does not get changed until 15,000 miles. |

| claire1: Be sure to read and check the circumstances that qualify one for severe driving conditions. Once you are sure of which conditions you drive under the most, follow the recommended maintenance schedule. |

Are you saying that you DON'T change the oil filter out till 15K miles? |

Claire1,
It has been discussed on other threads that Honda puts special oil initially in the the MDX to help during the breakin period. Go the 7,500 miles and have them also change the filter. Would you put on dirty underwear after coming out of the shower nice and clean? Don't listen to anyone who tells you not to change the filter when you change the oil each time. Read some of the threads under Maintenance if you want more information. |

| This is in responce to the oil change, Honda does not put special oil in your MDX , and the mor often you change your oil the better, but no matter how often you change your oil you should always change the filter, I change my oil every 3000, also the filter |

No, I'm not. The maintenance schedule in the manual is! Read it, there is a lot of useful information in there. |

The manual specifies that, during the break-in period, the engine oil should not be changed until the interval specified in the maintenance schedule. Page 194 in the US manual.
It might feel like you are pampering your car, but there is no reason to change your oil and filter any more frequently than suggested by Acura. Unless you just want to double your oil change bill and contribute to the waste disposal problem, that is! (All the oil change shops suggest frequent changes because they want your money, not because they care about your car.) Of course, if you are a "performance driver", or experience severe conditions, follow the "severe conditions" schedule. |
