In-Wall or In-Ceiling Speakers - Click HERE for Original Thread

Currently I have an unfinished walkout basement and I'm looking to install some audio equipment down there. I have finished all the framing and the rough-in plumbing and I'm on the electrical project now, which leads me to my questions.

1. Which is better - wall-mounted speakers or ceiling-mounted?
2. Brand and model recommendations for both.

I plan to have two main areas; one where a pool table and bar area will be and the other is where I want a plasma TV with a surround-sound environment. I was planning on installing wall and/or ceiling speakers instead of hanging something on the wall.

Thoughts/comments please.

If you just want ambiant sound then the ceiling speakers would work ok. If you want directional sound then you will need to go with wall speakers, all other factors being equal. This would apply to surround sound, multi-channel and stereo applications

I would go to a place that has both installed in a dummy ceiling or wall and decide which types/brands you like the best.

I would say for front speakers in wall and for the surrounds ceiling.

That's the setup I have, and it works pretty well. Its helped by the fact that the surround speakers are directly over the couch. :)

In wall for directional, home theater use is the way to go.

Depending on your budget, I would seriously consider the M&K SW-150 speakers...

M&K are VERY nice speakers (I own the S150 series)...a little pricey, but awesome speakers.

Good luck!

Appreciate the info. I will probably use ceiling speakers over the pool table and over the couch (I like that idea). I already have front speakers and a center channel so that base is covered.

After the construction project is finished it will be onto selecting a new receiver and a TV, if I have any $$ left at that point.
