Thought we could use a poll on the engine "drone" or resonance many have found at around 2,000 rpm, made worse the higher gear you're in.
I've never posted a poll, but I clicked on the "Post a poll" box below. Hope I then get prompted to set it up. |

| I hear it right around 70mph, but its not too bad as well as it goes away as I speed up or slow down. |

| Have 2 03 X's. No drone from either, one has 8K on it and the other has 5K. Both are touring models with the Michelin tires. I have driven both at varying speeds and I am always listening for anything out of the ordinary. |

Either never heard it ... or it's wasn't enough for me to notice.
Keyword here: wasn't
Now that I know about it, I'll go out of my way to hear it ... kinda like the other things/habits some people do that drive me crazy, but I didn't notice until someone was so kind as to point it out. :p |

Here is what I am am to figure out driving my new '04 with <1000 miles.
I get an drone from the exhaust system or tranny right around 2000-2100 RPM's regardless of what gear I am in. It does appear to be worse in 5th gear, but I hear it in 4th as well.

Search recent threads in the Problem discussion. In short it is very noticeable noise and vibration under certain driving conditions. |

Thanks for starting the poll...
Never heard it on my '02. Will try to listen for it tommorow when I test an '04. |

Yep
I got the drone blues on my 04. Sounds like I'll have to live with it. |

quote: Test drove two '04s today in an effort to determine if I should upgrade from my '02. The first was a touring/nav identified by the 19 year old salesman as the "dealer demo". It had about 750 miles on it. With my girlfriend and her grown son in the back seat, I drove the 2 mile loop around the dealership, all on flat city streets. Very difficult to sustain 2000 RPM's for any length of time because of traffic, etc. We all think we heard "something" but difficult to tell given the route.
When I commented that they wouldn't let us test drive a vehicle that HAD the noise problem (which the sales kid had already denied hearing anything about before) he offered to let us drive any other new X on the the lot. What he REFUSED to let me do is drive it on the freeway where I would have the time and speed to really test the complaints others have made in this tread (against company policy to let you test drive on the freeways...).
Think he didn't think I would take him up on his offer to drive a second vehicle because he seemed to have a hard time getting permission from the sales manager. He finally came back with the keys to a new touring model with only 7 miles. Drove the same 2 miles loop, again thought we heard something "different" at 2000 RPM but didn't really have enough open driving distance to test for sure.
While I was in the dealership I did sneak back to the service department and asked a service writer, "So, has Acura fixed the humming problems at 2000 RPM yet..", and he seemed not to know anything about such a problem - or at least "acted" like he didn't know.
Real problem or not, I'm not sure I want to pull the trigger on an '04 at this point, given the fact so many folks are complaining about this issue. I love my '02 and can live very well with it, but I did like the improvements made over the past 2 model years. To trade up will cost me money and I can't see doing it if there is any doubts about this potential problem.
This is my post about the test drive from one of the several other threads on this issue. When they called me yesterday to sign the papers on a Sagebrush tourning/nav I had a deposit on, I told them no deal until this problem is addressed by Acura. |

| They still have it ($500 credit card) but I don't anticipate any problems getting it back. There is no contract. They were going to call me back again after they had time to "find out" what the problems were... |

| 01' Touring, always had this problem. My drone is around 62 MPH. My tranny was replaced (after failure) @50K , no change in drone. I use snow tires in winter, no change in drone. |

My '01 does not have a drone, or if it does I do not know about it:rolleyes: It is not the quietest thing on the road, however;) But the road/wind noise we experience is not what this thread is asking I don't think. |

is this drone thing something like this?
when i speed up an uphill with 4th gear and let go the gas half way while still on the hill, the gear changes to 5th. At that moment i feel that the X doesnt have enough power to hold at about 70mph. then there I feel vibration but im not really sure there really is a vibration.
is this drone described in "Low Humming noise at 70 mph?" thread? |

I don't think so... that sounds like you just tricked the transmission into changing into 5th gear when it really shouldn't. Your X probably tries, at least momentarily, to use 5th to push/pull it up the hill, which 5th gear was NOT intended to do.
We're talking about a resonance at 2k rpm's (regardless of gear, but worse in higher gears), more noticeable when you're travelling at a constant speed. |

You can add my ditto to the list!
But then I don't do things like charge hills then have it labor in 5th momentarily to see if it makes strange sounds. Not my style of driving....:4: |

... with less than 50 miles on the car we have NOT heard any drone. On the test drive before signing papers I tried to hold the tach at 2000-2100 rpms for as long as I could with the radio off. I think that maybe the engine sounded a little bit louder at 2000 than it did at 1900. And I emphasize just maybe. Of course as rpms increase engine should increase slightly as well. In any event if I was not straining to try to hear something we most definietly would not have noticed anything amiss. Of course then we turnd the radio back on and couldn't hear a thing.
My wife says she noticed no change, only the hum of road noise (the '04 is quieter, but it is not silent). I am NOT saying the 2K hum is not an issue on this car; as I said we haven't really driven it yet. Therfore I am NOT yet voting on this poll. I'll make a vote afer more time driving the car. |

| I have to vote: '04 - never heard it. No Drone:cool: |
|

Just looked at the stats myself of the people who have voted. They seem rather interesting that either the problem has become more predominant in the newer models ie: Acura did not address this issue or that more and more people are listening for this droning sound.
I guess the droning issue is very subjective. Reading some past post on this issue, either people can live with it or simply hate it (for which I do not blame them myself) I for one, cannot hear any unusual sounds at 2000 RPM at different speeds. |

| Brand new 2004: I rather like the droning sound - a bit like a Jaguar XKE. Had I not read so much about it here, I doubt I would have paid any attention to it. It's so imperceptible that I had to turn the radio off to hear it. It starts at around 68mph and vanishes around 74 mpg. Were it not for the fact that it dissappears at higher speeds, I would have just assumed that the MDX was like lots of cars: the engines get louder the faster you go. I was a little surprised to hear the engine get quieter and then see that I'm driving over 80! |
