| I screwed up this pic too, sorry. But basically take the turn signal assy out of the reflector, and work a wire coupler onto the green (with a stripe) wire (+ positive). Slip the side lamp wire (white stripe) to a comfortable length. Leave enough slack so it is not stretched when you replace the turn signal lamp assembly. Clamp down the splice with pliers. Work carefully there is JUST enough room for the clamp to fit around the green wire and next to the black wire. Forget trying to attach a coupler to the black wire (- ground). |

| Instead attach the ground wire, here. Or anywhere you can get a good metal to metal attachment. There is a central ground connection below on this side if you prefer. The bare wire should be tinned to minmize corrosion of the bare copper over time. |

| Finished product! Clean the area well with isopropyl alcohol before attaching lamp to body. |

| I think it looks stock on the darker paint. I will tackle the driver's side tomorrow. I suspect it should work out fine, but things are not always the same as we know. |

Looks great Dale! Much better than on the white.
What do you guys think of these? I am no Micelangelo, as you can tell. These are just taped on. |

That's an improvement! Not quite up to your Sistine Chapel....:D |

| Here is bracket I was talking about. It is routed under the flange of the fender and the bracket for the hood support. |

Dale: Great job. Looks really nice with a darker background. Now, I can see you using your turn signal more often..... :2:
Phin: Looks better though.....especially in the far away picture. I think you should cover a little more of the edges. Why don't you take tape and cover a strip over the LED light and paint the rest. Ooooo better yet......take circular tape or the bandaids and cover over where the LED is and paint the rest of the light. This way you will have a different look....five separate round LED lights. Are you seeing what I'm seeing? You would also have a stealth side marker. |

Another great idea! I may just give it a shot. I have nothing to lose at this point. Thanks! |

Thanks! I would suggest others using my installation method get some heavy gauge solid wire, like #14 or stiffer and use in place of the coat hanger. Naturally, make sure it is insulated, that's the whole point to prevent scratching. Should be easier to move around than a coat hanger. |

I finished the driver's side this morning, and everything looks and works just fine.
But the experience was a bit more frustrating. As I did on the passenger's side I went to take out the existing signal bulb and socket so I could splice on the side marker light wire.
Try as I might, I could not get the socket out of the headlamp assembly! I got it loose, but it would not come out.
I even ended up removing the air cleaner housing and could still not determine why it would not come out.
Very strange. In any case, I cut back the plastic sleeve over the wires, and did the (greeen +) splice to the white banded side marker wire.
I attached the ground at the battery chassis connection. The wires should be dressed well on this side so they are not snagged when removing the air cleaner housing, etc. Tight quarters on this side.
I put everything back together. I will have to deal with the turn signal socket at some point when that bulb goes out I guess. |

I am very happy with mine. I think the right 'type' would look just fine on white paint.
This is about the only thing I've added to my X that really looks 'factory' with the exception of the rear deflector. Those LEDs are bright! No one second guesses when I intend to turn. |

tons,
I haven't done anything on this. I just installed the tow kit, so that took a bit. I am leaning towards getting some Hella or EuroLite side markers. I am a little spooked though and am not sure what color of housing to order. I may just order all 3 colors the Hella come in and see which one looks best. The Hella are oval, too and this may be a problem as well. Well nothing worth doing is ever easy!:D |

Here are the side markers I would like to retrofit onto the X.
You may recognize them on newer BMWs.
Available for $35 at the following website:

Now to figure out what hole pattern to cut into the fender... A litte gun-shy to cut such a big hole.

I wanted to bring this thread back to life. I just ordered some of the LED lights like DaleB has and Phin had.
What do you guys think about how it will look on the silver exterior? I might try painting the edges like Phin tried to see how it looks if the blue doesn't come out.
DaleB- are you still pleased with your modification? I'm curious about how they will look. Thanks for the pics of the install, I think it should be really helpful!
I just have to get my courage up to drill a hole in my baby. I will post pictures when I get them installed (assuming I succeed!).
Thanks! |

How about some BMW 745 markers?
Linky here.
I'm personally not interested in doing this mod (leased car), but looks kool on the TL.

P.S. Sorry if this was posted before. |

Those look sharp. It's unfortunate they don't have LED lamps that look that good, so the fender hole can be small enough for just the wire. |
