For those who pay someone to do it......do you take it to your dealer or to the local express oil change shop?

If not the dealer, do you take them the necessary filter or was that just crap the salesman told me about the filter being specialized?

Just order a half dozen filters & washer rings from Hondacuraworld and forget about it, you can go to either place. I usually find it cheaper to bring my own oil. Local Acura dealers charge me $6.20 for an oil change and also top off all the fluids and check tire pressures. Its a standard $24.95 "special" but they have to delete the overpriced 5 quarts of oil, and the full retail price of the filter, which leaves a measely $6.20 labor for a full-service oil change, along with a free car wash (don't let them wash your car unless its truly dirty, they do a quick and dirty job of it).

I do neither - I bring my MDX, along with 5 qts of Mobil 1 and an Acura filter, to a reputable local garage near my office. I can drop the car off and get a ride back to the office so I don't have to wait around. Dealer seems to take forever to get an oil change done and I can't stand waiting 45 - 60 mins when I have better things to do. Plus, the dealer is 30 mins from my house or office.

I would never take my car to a Quick Lube joint full of inexperienced "mechanics" but that's just my opinion.

Hi Timbrwolf9:

___If you aren’t going to DIY, head on over to a Walmart Super Center w/ Oil & Lube (if you have one near you) and they will change it for you for just $27.00 including 5 Qt’s of Mobil1 5W-30 synthetic, Supertech filter, and tread depths. Watch to make sure they install the crush washer. They don’t use the guns so you can watch the qt. by qt. pour yourself … They will give you the excess ~ 1/3 qt. if you would like to use it for something else. If you want the dealer to do it, bring in a SuperTech filter (~ $2.00 from Walmart) and 5 Qt’s from a 6 Qt. box purchase of Mobil1 Synthetic (~ $23.00 in 6 qt. quantities from a local Sam’s Club) and take it into the dealer. Make sure they are only going to charge you the $6.00 to $8.00 just in case however.

___Just my suggestion of course.

___Good Luck

I agree that you should stay away from chain, fast-change oil joints.

I've had to change the oil pan on an Explorer because Jiffy Lube used an impact wrench to "gently" spin on the drain plug. The dealer cannot warranty damage by outside mechanics, and Jiffy Lube has a strict policy of denying all forms of damage with the line that drain plugs & pan threads get stripped all the time, its a matter of normal wear and tear (car less than 1 yr old, all oil changes done by the same oil shop). I was shocked to get this line until I heard it repeated all the way to corporate, and the old, "you-have-to-deal-with-the-shop-in-question"-BS. It will cost you 3-4 times more than an oil change if you need to replace the pan. I'm not the only one this happened to, the guy before me at Jiffy Lube was getting the same speech just as they started on my car. On my mother's car, the same nice people used a screw-tipped cordless drill to tighten the screws on the air filter box, and stripped out the under nut, requiring replacement of the entire, expensive box. The chrys dealer smiled and asked if the car was taken to an oil-change chain, as he regularly replaces oil pans and filter boxes from chain customers. You can perform an internet search for express lube names & find endless horror stories.

Hi,

I see you are in SGV. Just wondering which dealer charges $6.20 for labor?

Thanks
DaleB
I know Honda North in Clovis, only charges $13 if you bring your own filter and oil. The Acura dealer 2 miles away charges $25.
