Wind noise from ski rack. - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have recently leased a 2004 base MDX. Before purchasing I browsed on this site and it was very helpful, especially in saving on accesories from Hondacura World. It was very appreciated.
I am having a problem with my factory ski rack which will whistle. The noise as expected, unpleasantly intensifies at highway speeds.
I was wondering if there are any fixes to this problem. I would like to just leave it on for the ski season, but I can not stand the whistling in the wind.

Thanks for your help,

Mark

I have a Barrecrafter ski rack.

Same problem.

One solution is to close the moon roof shade. This cuts down on the noise a bit.

Second suggestion: Carry your skis inside! They will stay cleaner and are less likely to be stolen.

Jeff,
Thanks for your response.

Keeping the moon roof shade closed does not help.

I go with my family often skiing. There's not much room inside if I carry the skis.

The noise probably comes from the space between the arms of the rack. I wonder if there is anything that would be effective in blocking the airflow between the spaces.

Just take the things off when not in use. I bought a set with my '03 and I only use it on days when I'm driving to slopes. It only takes a cordless screwdriver with phillips head about 2 minutes to install or remove these things.

My $.02.

Perk, Thanks for the info.

If I can't find a solution, taking it off each time would be the way to go.

I spoke to Tim from Hondacura World. He gave me a great idea; placing ear muff bands around the rack would cover the space, and not look too bad.

I'll give a try and let everyone know if it works.

MY NOISE WAS FROM THE TRIM IN THE RACK RAILING.Duct tape it and see if it stops the noise. It was most prevalent in a crosswind or @ 65- 70 mph. Tape did stop the noise temporarily and then the dealer @ no charger siliconed both strips. This fixed the whole problem I did report this rearlier on this site. Try it.

I have a Thule 725 ski rack, and have not noticed any excess noise on my 2002 MDX-Touring. I wonder if different ski rack models have the problem?

Thanks for your replies.
I believe the MDX ski rack for 2004 is different than 2002. I have been unsuccessful in stopping the wind noise trying tape and closing the holes with fabric. . I decided to only put the rack on when I go skiing.

JimH,

Does the Thule ski rack attach to the MDX factory rack? I have a 2001 Touring w/Navi and was wondering if I would need to buy anything else, like an adapter, in order to use it?

Thanks

I have the same problem with the wind noise. I put the Acura ski rack on for the first time this past weekend, and the noise was extremely loud on the 2.5 hour drive. However, it has been so cold that I have not had a chance to see where the noise is coming from. For those who have been successful in stopping the wind noise via tape and closing the holes with fabric, where -- meaning, is the noise coming from the ski rack or the cross bars? Also, what is it that Acura siliconed? Thanks.

Solution:

TURN UP THE VOLUME ON YOUR SYSTEM AND ENJOY AND PUT YOUR MIND TO OTHER THINGS !!!!! IF YOU WANT SILENCE, perhaps you should have considered a LEXUS (The ladies quite suv)

Nicksan: The Thule 725 and 726 (possibly other Thule models as well) install easily when you use the Thule "fat mouth clamps";

Picture of "fat mount clamps" for some Thule ski racks. These fit the MDX factory top rack for 2001-2002 for sure, and are easy to install:

Does anybody know if having a moonroof visor decreases wind noise from the ski rack? I was also wondering if anybody noticed any changes in mpg's with or without the deflector with the rack installed?

I don't particularly like the looks of the moonroof visor, but if it helps with aerodynamics at all, I'll probably get one.
JeffK
IMHO, get it only to reduce noise.

The savings on gas will never equal the price of the wind deflector.

In other words bad investment

The wind deflector does not help with the whistle, but does reduce the wind noise when the moon is opened while traveling at highway speeds. A plus IMHO.

My 04 has been in several times for this whistling flaw. I thought the last visit had fixed it, but after washing the X, the black silicone/grease looking goop that abounded along the railing and rack washed away, returning the awful whistle.

With the sound system turned up, it is less of an irritation. BUT on the occasion when some silence is in order, the annoyance creeps in.

I have the Thule 725 carrier as well and have not noticed any noise either.

I found that after I put on the ski rack WITHOUT the weather stripping I had a loud wind noise/whistle sound. Very irritating!!! I tried using tape (blue tape-painters tape) and covered the open ridges. The noise disappeared!!! So I guess I'm heading to the Acura dealer to purchase extra weather stripping and cut it to the exact spacing of the groove w/ the ski rack on.

I thought that some of the members will find this tip helpful.

Thanks for the tip stanmanh. Just tried your tape idea. Took it for a test drive. NO WHISTLING NOISE (even up to 80+ MPH). Then, cut rubber strippng to fit and reinstalled (front rail only), put skiis on rack and test drove. Still quite.

Hoping to purchase extra stripping. Is the stripping available from dealer?

Thanks again !!!
