The weather's sposed to be zaino-friendly in the SF Bay this week (and was for half the wkend) so I thought I'd post some partly-zaino'd pix. I'm gonna cheat in the 2nd one and post one of the Lexus, since it's done.
Here's the MDX hood -- 3 coats of z5 so far (dawned and clayed before z1). z6 between all coats, of course. Planning 2 or 3 z2 this week.
Sorry no full body shots yet as I have some wicked dealer-installed swirls/wheel burns to remove from the rear quarter panel first

Yea, yea, cheating. But check out this shine! This is the trunk. 2 coats z5 and 2 coats z3 (no clearcoat on the Lexus). As w/the MDX, dawned and clayed before z1 and z6 between apps.
Will post more MDX pics @ end of week once I'm done removing the wheel marks from the dealer's buffer...

Very Sweet Worm. I started the process this weekend and apparently put on way too much Z1&5... it was a bear to remove. I spent a lot of time and a lot of energy applying and removing Z1&5, then Z6 half of my MDX before I ran out of time on Sunday. Obviously my technique has to be worked on, it was hard to apply the Z1 & 5 when you can't even see it going on. My MDX is black also, and it does look good so far, but I can't invest the kind of time I did this weekend. I welcome any tips on application that you would like to offer, such as how much you put on the applicator, how much physical area of the applicator did you use, etc.
You pictures are great motivation! Thanks |

My first dry time was overnight, since I also used WAY too much and ended up having to remove with a damp towel.
Spray the applicator a couple of times w/z6, then make an "X", corner to corner, with the z1 or z2 or z5 (whatever you're using). Not a ton -- about the twice the width/depth of a strands of spaghetti for each line in the X. Mash the applicator (fold it both ways) to spread it around.
You should be able to do the hood and 1 or 2 front quarter panels with that amount.
It goes on and comes off WAY faster when thin and after that first z1+ coat. |

OK Worm, obviously you've been up close and personal with your paint job on you MDX. You have also done the same with you Lexus. On other threads, people have been complaining about orange peel. Here's the money question:
Do you feel that your MDX has "excess" orange peel (as compared to other cars you've owned and your Lexus)? |

I can certainly verify that the paint quality isn't as good as on the Lexus -- which is 18 months old and never been waxed til now (and you can see the results).
There's definitely more orange peel, everywhere, on the MDX (virtually none on the Lexus) and there is also a lot more spiderwebbing on the MDX (but that might be clearcoat related).
I don't know that I'd characterize the orange peel as "excessive," since I'm hardly a paint expert. I wouldn't go back to Acura and ask them to repaint the thing -- but would say it's "suboptimal". :)
I'll have to check out my wife's old Honda -- it was black and uncared for -- to see if the paint on the Acura and Honda are comparable. |

Thanks Worm! I knew I was putting on too much but it really freaked me to put something on that I couldn't even see. It's been a while since I had a car I cared to detail. I let you know how I proceed, and post my pix.
7plus... I noticed orange peel on my MDX, mostly on vertical panels. After I get my baby good and clean and in direct sunlight I'll take a super close look and try to supply pix for comparison. |

Good job w/ the Zaino, Worm. :-)
I'd show you pics of my silver ML, but it just wouldn't look as good compared to your dark paint :-)
