| Had the tired old Mahogany X in for the 45K service and a new set of brakes and casually asked a sales rep what he'd put me in an '04 Touring w/ Navi for. After a little negotiating we left it at $12,045 - I said I'd talk to the wife and continue the discussions tomorrow afternoon. Obviously the worst I will do is $12000 (plus TT&L) for an out the door price, but I think there is some more room (especially since we haven't really discussed accessories) for them to come down. What do you think? |

Hi Msu79GT82:
___It appears to be a good deal for you …
KBB 01 Touring w/ NAV 45K – Good Condition: DR: $31,415 - PP: $26,210 - TIV: $23,040
04 Touring w/ NAVI (188): $41,200
___I won’t bother looking up BB and Edmunds but KBB is just a start …
___I would bargain to $11K and then take whatever the dealership offers … AND don’t just walk, Run from the dealership w/ the 04’s keys in your hands ;)

Funny you should say that - the loaner car they gave me was an '04 TL that had 2 miles on the odometer:eek:  :1:
BUT the family still needs a reasonably large 7-seat SUV and they MDX is still my number one choice. |

No, thats not what I ment. I see from your sig you've also got a `02 TL - upgrade that, and wait for the MDX re-do to upgrade it. |
|
|
| msu79gt82 |
| I could ask them about that; however there are several other factors to consider: 1) MDX needs new tires soon (~$600), 2) MDX has a cracked windshield ($200 deductible - they know that and it was taken into considration). Thus there is a minimum of $800 I'll have to spend on the '01 soon (not counting a possible extended warranty - still waiting on a reply from Ray Laks for pricing). |

If I can get them to $11K or $12K with lots of free accessories (or $11K and goodies - might as well be greedy!) in light of cracked windshield and tire situation (see above post) then I'll probably go fo it. |

......in the '04 model and I must say they've made it EVEN QUIETER than the '03 which by itself is very impessively quiet for an SUV  !!! .....the Bose stereo just sounds a bit better, and the leather quality is a bit better. NAV system is EXACTLY like the '03 in screen size and hardware. However, the software seems a bit different with MINOR changes/improvements such as, the grapics (color scheme) and some layout variations, but not in actual functionality (could be just the updated second generation NAV disk which is not yet available for the '03 model). While voice commands have been expanded to 217, contrary to popular belief the new commands are for additional NAV functions and NOT for the radio and climate control systems as in the new '04 TL, the new Accord and the TSX!
coming from an '01 you will VERY MUCH notice the difference, in how eerily quiet it is at highway speeds (very little road noise). The engine is a bit "throatier" on hard acceleration, but the sounds coming from it are a bit more "muted" than the '03, giving it a very very pleasant, refinded and subdued V-6 sound.
If you ask me, since you would be upgrading from an '01, you're definitely gonna see a big difference, especially the SECOND GENERATION NAV SYSTEM and the vastly improved NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) characteristics! .....and I think it's worth it! |

I just found out from the acura website www.acuranavi.com that the update DVD is now available for the '03 Voice activated Nav system. it is: version 3.30F (DVDIPF06330FJ) ......and I stand corrected from my above mentioned post ........The new update expands voice commands to 217 and makes the aforementioned minor changes. So the '04 NAVI and '03 NAVI w/update disk are identical in every way
One VERY INTERESTING feature has been added to these updates (both the "voice-activated-nav" and the "non-voice-activated-nav" versions 2.11b and 3.30F) ......and that is: OPTIONAL FULL-ROUTING AND GUIDANCE IN NON-VERIFIED AREAS......Previously when you entered a non-verified area (rural areas not digitally mapped by NAVTECH), turn-by-turn guidance (voice and the highlighting) stopped, and a blue dotted line (connecting your position and the destination "as-the-crow-flies") pointed you in the direction of your final destination and you had to "manually" navigate the streets using the screen and the vehicle icon. Now, you can go into the SETUP menu and specify full guidance in these non-verfied areas as well, albeit with slightly reduced accuracy. |

The Sales Rep is not in until 11:00 am (CST); I plan a phone conversation then - telling him we are close but not there yet. I need to know how much more I can - either lower price or accessories. Regarding color either Redrock Pearl or Midnight Blue (but the wife has yet to see the quartz interior - that may be a no go). |

|
| msu79gt82 |
| ... the roof rack was a deal killer for THEM! At first they thought I did not have the rack (in fact at first they thought is was a Base). They said roof racks were absolutely necessary for reasle; when I said mine was in the garage they were OK with it:rolleyes: |

| I hve the Quartz Interior in my 04 Starlight Silver X and it is very nice. I have the light interior in my TL and it shows dirt very easily. I felt the Ebony would show too much dust. The Quartz is a very nice medium, especially with 2 young kids. Good Luck with your decision. |

I just returned from Sterling McCall to see colors and got my first test of the new Navi coverage:confused: :3: - no improvements to my area at all:wtf:
I live in west Houston and my subdivision was covered in '01 (still is); but all the expansion to the west in the last 4 years is not there - unbelievable. Good news is there is full coverage in Lubbock now. |
|
|
| msu79gt82 |
I have been unable to see a Midnight Blue up close and personal; we will not buy/order sight unseen. Wife likes the Red Rock a lot and the Saddle interior is fine (have it now). The Sage Brush looks terrific in bright sun, but looks totally different in dimmed light; shadows, night, etc. Wife will have to really see and study the Quartz interior though.
PS: Sandstone looks much better in person than any pictures I have seen. |

Well we signed the papers a couple of hours ago - they get the '01 and I (the wife actually) got the Sage Brush Pearl '04 Touring w/ Nav including Cargo Cover and Tinted front windows for $12,212. I'll keep the Cargo Net, Wheel Locks and Full Size spare from the '01. Thats as good as I could get - all other accessories from Tim.
I'll give more details later, but I will say John Eagle Acura in West Houston is great to work with. The sales rep I bought the '01 MDX and '02 TL-S from is no longer there, but my new rep, Brian Simpson was great. :1: |

......and a great color choice! (Sagebrush actually was my first color choice, but I got Midnight blue and ended up really liking it) .....BTW, Cerritos Acura here in Southern California had over 20 '04 MDXs on the lot a couple days back when I went to test drive, and 4 of them were Sagebrush, but I doubt your dealer would trade one all the way from California ;) |

........did you test the Navi in an '03 or '04. I'm trying to figure out if it had the old disk (current one in '03 models and possibly EARLY '04 units as well), or the updated disk (3.30F). Cause it could be possible that the updated version has the new expansion?? .....just a thought! |

It was an '04 - but of course I did not check the disc version date. Sterling McCall is the biggest (and most arrogant) dealer in Houston, so even though they had a bunch on the lot, I'm not sure just how early an '04 it was. Interesting possibility. |

But that is a very interesting part of the story. I told my sales rep (Brian Simpson at John Eagle Acura) that we would be going out of town over the holidays and that we would put an additional 1300-1400 miles on the '01. They did not care (the additional miles would NOT affect their trade offer). Sterling McCall on the other hand said that the additional miles would knock $500 off the trade offer:eek: When I questioned why 1300 miles = $500 dollars he hemmed and hawed but it didn't change.
Didn't matter anyway since Sterling McCalls "best" offer was $3000+ over John Eagles. |

The '01 was purchased in March '01 from John Eagle Acura (MSRP; but with lots of free stuff documented elsewhere - a very good deal at the time). So it was essentially three years old with 45,000 miles on it. The windshield was cracked and the tires were OEM (hence new tires in the not too distant future); otherwise it is a very clean well maintained car. The deal Brian Simpson and John Eagle Acura made me was trade the '01 for an '04 (both Touring w/ Navi) for $12,212 plus TTL.
The business/financial decision went like this (I considered 2 assest groups):
Group 1 - an '01 MDX (pay for new windshield and tires) and 12,000 cash.
Group 2 - an '04 MDX
Then I tried to predict what the assets would be worth in three years; Group 1 with severly depreciated '01 at ~90K miles and 12,000 plus interest; and Group 2 with three year depreciation at 45K miles. I could never make keeping the '01 MDX a better deal. Granted such predictions are frought with peril; but here is a reasonable prediction:
Group 1: '01 MDX at 90K miles - $12000 plus 13,000 (less the ~1000 for windshield and tires) = $24,000
Group 2: '04 MDX at 45K miles = $28,000
From a financial standpoint it seems like a good deal. |
|
|
| msu79gt82 |
I did all the internet research prior to discussing the trade - Edmunds, KBB, nadaguides, Carmax, etc to get a feel for the value. John Eagle offered $27,000 for the '01 which was at the high side of the trade-in figures I was seeing on the websites. So all in all it was a good trade, recall it has a cracked windshield and OEM tires.
What was interesting was the accessories situation - roof rack was a requirement (I'm glad its still in the garage) and my powder-coated sidesteps added some value, but nothing else mattered! I'm keeping the Cargo Net, Wheel Locks, and Full Size Spare (again I'm glad I still have the donut).
And finally they did not care that we'd put an additional 1400 miles on it over the holidays. Not only did Sterling McCall care about these additional miles, but they low balled the trade in the first place. |
|
|
| msu79gt82 |
... in an effort to help each other out. I can NOT say enough good things about John Eagle Acura in West Houston. My sales rep was Brian Simpson, I thought he was very upfront and shot straight.
If anyone wants to try them tell him that internet guy, MSU79GT82, referred you (they do have a referral reward program - hey I shoot straight to). :1:
Sterling McCall on the other hand:rolleyes: His offer was more than $3000 higher than John Eagles:eek: They refused to break down the trade versus the new car price, but comments led me to believe that they really lowballed the trade. He did say that their offer was NOT a final offer and that when I discovered that John Eagles offer was not legit then I could come back and talk some more. Sterling McCall challenged me to go and buy that other deal if it was really legit - so we did!! They were arrogant in '01 and nothing has changed.:11: :9: |

In reality the "old" X was still in great condition (except windshield and tires) - but the deal seemed too good to pass up, especially in light of an imminent $800 (min) on windshield and tires.

Well, the 01s and 02s were the pioneers of this great vehicle. And who can say we did not have a great time with them all? Those great colors were short-lived though, it's too bad more people did not have a chance to get them. I know mine was in like the last 1/3 of the 02s to get Granite Green. By then, Mahogany was nothing more than a legend. And we only have a couple of members with Emerald Green.
During a recent newscast it was announced that some manufacturers are limiting colors down to as few as 3!!! Black, Silver, and White!
Jaguar is one of the leaders of this trend. Sad...sad..sad... |

I really like the '04 Touring rims as well as the '03/'04 Base rims. I did like the '01 Touring also (I'm keeping one for the Full Size Spare). I did NOT like the '03 Touring at all; as with all things X each to his own - variety is the spice of life. |

I just swung by the Acura dealer on my way back from washing the X and TL. They have 7 Xs on the lot (2 of them 03s). This is almost unheard of! After watching the lot for over a year, the most I have seen there at any one time is 3!! Demand must be softening quite a bit.
They had a few 04 TLs and those are very nice, too!
They did have a SBP there and it is a very cool color. Looked grayish-green at night.
The new model is very nice but I have no regrets buying when I did. Enjoy the new ride!! |

I go there to pick it up this evening (at 6:30 - dark and raining), get in and turn on the ignition and ...
... its the wrong car. SBP Touring (no Navi). The saleman said that he was told my SBP arrived this morning, he called me and arranged to have it prepped; w/o ever looking at it in detail. They seemed real embarrased; apparantly two SBP Touring were coming in on an any day basis (one with Navi and the other w/o). I'm told mine should be here any day.

I'm being super nice for the moment - the $500 gift check they promised before Christmas (see above) is a verbal agreement. Its not that I don't trust them, but I'm being super cordial and above board for now.

So plan to pick it up Thursday afternoon. :1: |

... the actual purchase experience was hassle free. Most everything was ready to go; however the car was not gassed up, they filled the tank at our request - but if we hadn't caught it or said something then we'd have missed out. But we said something and they filled the tank no problem. There was a minor chip (chip on painted part) and a scratch (on grey part) on the rear bumper (probably due to the tie down strap) that they will fix at the Body Shop. They volunteered the body shop, even though the chip really is quit small.
They did try to sell me an extended warranty (AcuraCare), but with no high pressure tactics at all. We declined for the moment (said we'd not buy it then and there w/o more thought) and said we'd think about it.
As was the case with the '01 MDX and the '02 TL-S evrything went smootly at John Eagle Acura, give Brian Simpson a call (and tell him I referred you).:1: |

Purchase price was $39,045 with a $500 dealer promotional rebate (rebate has tax implications). Thus in essance the sale price was $38,545. The '01 was traded at $27,000. I figured that was a pretty good price considering it had 47,100 miles, a cracked windshield, and needed new tires. So net to me, in essence, was $11,545. However I had to pay tax on $12,045 then had the promotional "rebate" applied like a downpayment. The deal also includes six free oil changes, a value of about $120.
We kept the cargo cover and net, the wheel locks, and the full size spare from the '01. They were not interested in them; said they'd add no real value to it with respect to their resale. As I mentioned earlier they required the roof ra | | | | |
