| My wife and I are expecting twins in February. I wanted to set up a website where I could post pictures of the babies and send the link to friends & relatives who are scattered around the country rather than bombard their e-mail with pictures. Does anyone have any recommendations of a personal website service that is easy to use and cheap/free? |

| If sharing pictures is all you want. Why not use something www.shutterfly.com As long as you have a high speed Internet connection, uploading pictures is easy enough. |

Depending on your OS and level of comfort using HTML, you can generally set one up for free using IIS and your ISP.
Are you on cable or DSL and have a static IP?
Do you have a router?
Are you running Windows 2000?
Are you comfortable using GUI HTML editors like Dreamweaver or FrontPage?
Setting up a webserver takes approx 15 mins but if you aren't comfortable with the page/photo links creation part, then it makes sense to latch onto an online photoalbum service like ofoto.com or shutterfly as previously suggested. |

Thanks for the info. To answer crmsnidol -
Are you on cable or DSL and have a static IP? - Cable w/ static IP
Do you have a router? - No.
Are you running Windows 2000? Windows XP
Are you comfortable using GUI HTML editors like Dreamweaver or FrontPage? - Never done it but consider myself good with computers and a quick learner.
I was hoping to create a "pretty" website because I like to "screw around" with computers. Maybe, however, it would be better/easier to go with one of the photo album services. Is there a limit on how much you can download with those services? I couldn't find this info easily on the respective websites. |

| In your situation, i.e. Daddy-to-be, I would recommend GoDaddy. :D |

Depending on what your ISP offers, you may have some (limited) free space and generic website building tools available to you already. For instance Comcast offers 10 MB of free space as well as some tools to get you up and running with a quick (and generic looking) website quickly - including templates for sharing pictures.
Also, places like Yahoo! have their (free) Geocities service that offers similar things (limited space, generic templates and tools, etc.).
Might not be what you are after in the long run but, could get you going quickly. |

Don't know what your role is as far as taking care of the two babies but you are not going to have too much time messing with computers for the first 3-6 months (especially twins). I found the photo hosting to be the best since some of my relatives end up using the service to print the pictures. As far as limit goes, I am not too sure but I have over 300 3 megapixels photo of my two kids on shutterfly. |

vlam,
I guess you're right. I think I'm going to look into ofoto.com and shutterfly.
Thanks again! |

| I went to yahoo.com and setup a website and registered a domain name. Costs me $14.95 a month. I receive 100mb of space, 5 email address, cgi, front page extensions, blah, blah, blah. Just something else to think about. |

...would be how much bandwidth they allow. |

| Bandwith... I guess it depends on the application. If I set up an IIS or an Apache server at my house, I would need to increase the amount of uptream bandwith at my house, have a better machine (compaq proliant, etc) and then place a machine on the dmz so outside users can access it. So yes.. bandwith is important depending on the application but if its for personal use, then yahoo or some other hosting site should do the job. Please remember that downstream is usually much faster than upstream when offered by DSL or a cable modem. |

| I didn't mean for your server. I meant for the $14.95/100MB you get from Yahoo!. It most likely has monthly limit on bandwidth, ie. throughput. Depending on how many people you let know about your site, and the amount+size of photos your make available, its possible you could max out your allowed bandwidth much earlier than the end of the month, and end up defunct. |

| Don't forget if grandparents want photos the hosting from a photo service such as shutterfly, ofoto, etc. makes it easy for them to order their own print. |

Never had problems at all and superior CS. I paid about $5 a month selling islands. Now that's insane price. |

For sharing photos, take a look at smugmug . Fast, easy to use and fairly inexpensive. And the monthly statistics are fun to follow.
Personal plug: my galleries are here . |
