How much do you 'gift' for services during the Holidays? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hey-Jude
One of those surprising things I learned after getting married is that you're actually supposed to give Christmas gifts to people you don't even know who might give you some kind of service during the year.

Not that I really wanted to learn this bit of info...I was happier in my ignorance...but now that I'm forced into it I'm curious what standards others go by in determining the amounts to give.

I'll start...postal carrier = $20, trash guy = $20 and daycare lady = ~$130 and rising (a little more than a week's pay).

Just curious if these fall in line with other's norms!

Happy Holidays!

I give postal carrier $20, sanitation technician $20, and I give my vendors ea. $100.00 x 3, we also give the teachers at school a gift.

Hey-Jude,

It is not necessary to give service workers a Christmas gift. Give something small as a token of appreciation if and only if you feel like it. Happy Holidays.

Mail lady $20-$25 basket

Garbage man $nada. Used to give a basket or case'o'beer, but they don't fetch the garbage anymore; they drive by and use the automatic thing on the truck. Plus, peeps steal the goodies we left out for them.

Newspaper fairy (appears 430am-ish, I think): $20

Our cleaning lady $75-ish in gifts

Our babysitter $unknown - still deciding...she's 13 if anyone has recommendations :)

But I'm with Excalibur on the sentiment.

Maybe something like: one or two pairs of movie passes, or a gift card to the local Ulta salon (I don't know if you have these in your area, it's a store for purchasing all sorts of perfumes, make-up, hair accessories, etc. along with an in-house salon) - I figure a 13 year old girl would go nuts in a place like that, I know my wife does, and she's slightly older the your babysitter!;)

I moved this year from a fancy building with 5 or 6 Concierge (aka doormen) + super + 4 maintenance guys, etc so I'm saving $$$ this year. I have some questions on how to tip certain people.

First, I thought the mail carrier was not allowed to accept cash. Is this true?

Second, I don't know how to tip the mail person. I have never seen him/her and my paper is charged to my credit card. How do I give a tip to him/her?

Third, how do you tip the "sanitation engineers?" They have 3 guys/gals working on the truck each day, but not always the same people. Do you tip them all? I actually know one of the guys on my route because my wife works with his wife. I am thinking of just tipping him through her. Is this acceptable?

I actually tip my barber every year. Usually I double the charge for that day.

mailperson

USPS requests that gifts not have a cash value to exceed $20 along with a letter of appreciation to their supervisor. And while technically speaking they are not allowed to accept cash (being civil servants) it is overlooked for postal workers.

btw some guidelines (read "suggestion" not rules) is available at
www.tipping.org

there is a section "Holiday Tipping Guidelines"

Ditto, plus $20 each for my mailman, UPS & Fedex drivers, and an extra weeks pay for the cleaning crew.
