hey guys, merry christmas :p
just a prelude to this post, i did search the site
anyway, i didnt see any posts related to the FSS falling off. makes me paranoid, as i was second hand witness to an accident on I-5 from a loose rolling tire hitting an oncoming vehicle (on my side) at 70+. destroyed the vehicle...miraculously, no one was seriously injured. yes, i stopped. :4:
has anyone figured a way to secure the FSS to prevent the failure? ive read posts on securing the tire to drag in case of failure...good idea. but as someone has mentioned, i drive with some loud beats...id probably drag for miles before someone flagged me down.
trying to prevent.
second....did you guys feel or see any effects of the added weight (ie additional sag, lower gas mileage)? just out of curiosity. thanks all, love this site |

The consensus seems to be that the benefits of the FSS outweigh the potential pitfalls. I haven't noticed any loss of mpg or added sag after adding the FSS--remember you're only adding a few pounds over the weight of the donut. If you've done 54k miles (and counting) already, a donut is a liability.
Someone is always selling a used wheel or tire, or check the online used parts recyclers (I got a $100 Touring wheel and new $50 Cross-Terrain for my FSS). |

| I highly recommend the FSS, especially if you travel much with your MDX ( I have already logged over 7000 miles in 2.5 months of ownership). I too have heard the stories about the spare tire falling off on random occassions, so I took some advice I found here a while back. I have the FSS and it is currently secured with the factory cable and also a heavy duty combo lock bicycle chain. I have recently picked up a MasterLock Python cable lock that has a 6 foot cable and am going to replace the bike lock with this other cable lock when time/weather permits. |

| The spare hoist may have been defective in those few(?) instances. Then again, it may be of less than a robust design. An extra cable lock is not a bad idea as a precaution. |

| You can do that exactly on a 01-03 but not an 04 X. With the dual exhausts, you have to use a different location to attach the cable lock. I found a couple of hole in the frame at the back I was able to run the cable through. |
