My car has 2800 miles on it, and I just scheduled the first oil change for this Friday.

How often is everyone changing their oil? I've recently read reports saying every 3K is too often.

Gosh, there must be a dozen discussions already about oil in the Maintenance forum. To summarize:

1. Manual recommends 7500mi for first oil change, or 3750 for severe driving conditions. If you're not totally anal, this is fine for modern engines and modern oils.

2. Or, start doing it at 5000mi intervals for life of car. Easy to remember. Rotate tires and 1X change tranny fluid while you're at it.

3. If switching to synthetic oil, use dino oil for first 7500-10000 miles before adding Mobil 1.

4. A 3000mi interval is somewhat overkill for normal driving.

5. Whichever you do, always change the filter. And let's not get started on recommended oil filters...

You will get a lot of varied answers on this topic (it has been discussed numerous times).

Some people go 3,000 miles, others go 5,000, and others will go the 7,500 that Acura recommends.

It depends on your driving conditions. Do you tow? Are you in severe weather? Are you mainly highway or city driving?

I plan on getting an oil change every 7,500. I don't tow and my miles are 75% highway and 25% city. I figure if I do what Acura recommends, then I can't really go wrong if a problem develops later and they try to blame me.

Personally, I think 3k is too often. I think it's a marketing ploy by quick lube places like Jiffy Lube to get you to spend more money. The newer cars are engineered to go longer. Just check the quality/color of your oil.
