| I have a 2002 MDX. At 12,500 miles my RACK & PINION WAS REPLACED. Now at 13,700 I need a new TRANSMISSION. They said that they will replace it with a RECONDITION ONE and they won't give me a new one. What a LEMON THIS CAR IS. I am thinking of getting a lawyer and going to court and and fight for a new car. Do you think I would win. Who can I write to that would help me. I am afraid to drive the car thinking that something major might break with my children in the car. If you can help me my email address is TOEMAILMARK@WEBTV.NET |

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I seriously doubt this falls under the lemon law which is normally reserved for the 'same' problem never being resolved to your satisfaction after repeated attempts to repair it.
But I would make sure Acura and the dealership are well informed about your displeasure. Make sure all the work is performed correctly and I would insist on a loan car until all repairs are completed. It is unfortunate, but you could just get yourself more frustrated with no recourse in your search for other legal solutions.
Well, the only 'new' transmissions are the ones installed in new vehicles at the factory (and how good was the one you had?). It is not a normally stocked item like many other parts. But it should be rebuilt to new specificiations. If you do searches on here, you will find rack and pinion replacements are rare, but there are a fair number of threads on transmission repelacements. In most all cases the 'replacements' work out just fine. Best of luck! |

Just curious, but your mileage seems very low. Is your MDX strickly an "in town" vehicle or do you just use it on weekends?
I have heard cases where a high percentage of low speed driving and long periods of non-use can lead to accelerated aging -- more chance of moisture soaking in and less chance for things to get to operating temperature.
I do belive that most automakers focus on the typical use patterns of about 12,000 miles per year... |

He could be at 12K a year if he got it in late 2002.....but for sure the highway miles would be the better ones. |

| I just bought mine in for a reconditioned 2002 tranny to be installed (32k miles). They are very few that have had the slipping 3rd gear. It will not cause you to ever get stuck, it only slips like a clutch in third and then catches. My dealer has only had 3 already show up on the 2002 models. I though they would put in a new or rebuilt 2003 unit but the driveshafts are different and would require to many changes. The reason for the rebuilt and not a new unit is because they are aware of a defect in the third gear on these units and if replace with a new tranny you would risk the same problem again, instead they had changed that gear so that the problem wouldn't come back. Makes sense to me. I though all the babing I did with the triple flushes at 15K and 30K would prevent any issues but as I can see maintenace will not over a manufacturer defect. I just hope the vehicle is just as quiet and no new problems after the install. I recently had new rotor up front and replaced all the pads and the braking has got amazing, I guess as the pads wear you start to get used to the braking It's amazing how they are when new. |
