On another thread, I posted my concerns about possible problems with the voice Navi upgrade, like Acura/Alpine had with the new non-voice CD. Since it requires a dealer visit to re-install the original CD, I'm going to wait a while to be sure it works first.
Acura told me that the voice Navi is a functional match to my wife's 04TL Navi mapping capabilities (except no audio and a/c commands); which has:
1. The name of my town, which was incorporated in 1996.
2. My office street and address, which was built in 2001.
3. New restaurants that we go to.
NONE OF WHICH ARE IN MY 03 MDA DATABASE
So the good news is that the voice Navi upgrade seems to bring the Navi database forward around 5 to 6 years (finally), but the bad news is that I'm gun shy to buy right away because of the screw-up on the non-voice upgrade. There are also some new voice commands, but I find myself using the voice commands less and less.

Been using the 2003 update for about a week. Here's what I notice. Some of my comparisons may be wrong as I did not reinstall the old disk to be sure:
No real difference in speed. (The car goes just as fast :-)
Seems like the font for the streets is a little bigger and heaver in 1/8th and 1/20th.
I like the little position indicator when the screen expands when about 500 feet from the turn. Instead of just the arrow indicating the turn, a small indicator in a small circle travels up the arrow.
I noticed the ability to turn off voice on setup screen #3, and thought they finally give us the ability to turn off the voice guidance, but that's not the case. It must be the voice recognition (which can be turned off by just not saying anything.) Why would they turn off voice rec?
The position of my office seems to be more accurate on the map. Previously it was about 100 ft. off.
Installation was uneventful, which is good. Basicaly you just put the disk in and give it a chance to initialize, then drive on a digitized road.
I believe it now understands voice commands for all the buttons that are on the screen, except the typing keyboard, which would have been the best update, had they done that. The buttons I've tried worked fine.
That's all I've noticed. |

Ok, of course, I did a search on the topic, and I'm sorry but I just found too much info/crap/posts.
ALL I am interested in is...as a 2003 owner (so I have the "new" system) and living in Boston, should I buy the latest DVD from the dealer? This question is COMPLETELY dependent on whether or not you know if the update contains Big Dig updates. :p
OTHERWISE...I could not care less. I will wait till end of 2004 to get the next update. That will surely have nice things compared to what I have now. |
|

Let me ask you this question. What do you expect to get from the update? IMHO if you can spare the $200, buy it. I bought the update and am using it for more than a week now. I think it's really good. I love the improvements on the voice commands. Basically you can do everything without touching the screen.
The new (read -- improved) interface is OK. It has some fancy stuff which are nice to have, but not really essential. Haven't tried the unverified road guidance thing. Calculation speed is about the same if not equal. Coverage wise, I live in Los Angeles and everything is mapped around my neighborhood so I didn't get a chance to verify the improvements yet.
Overall I'm happy with my update, but I maintain that it was not an essential update for me. Just wanted to have it. :p |

| Whoa, whoa, whoa . . . where have I been?! Is there a navigation update for 03+ owners?! For some reason I thought there was only an update for folks with the "old system." I guess I must have been under a rock or not paying attention something. Shame on me! :1pat: Where do we get the update? You can just point me to the other thread I obviously missed! Thanks in advance and sorry for being so clueless! :( |

Apparently the "hype" has caused many-an-MDX-owner to think it's just an update for 01/02 Navis. But it certainly seems now that there is a separate DVD update disk for the 03 people that makes it identical to the 04 navi.
Well as you guys know, the Big Dig is the biggest headache for Alpine in ALL the USA I bet to progam in there these days, with such massive size and changes every month literally. I wonder if they got the new underground tunnels in the update!
Well, if I don't get it, I'll most certainly buy the next release as soon as it comes out (hopefully Sept 04?) |

Yes you hit the sterring wheel switch and say " Display Information",
then you hit the sterring wheel switch and say " Display Trip Computer". You can also hit the the sterring wheel "Back" switch to go backwards. |

Actually, the `03 update for Voice Enabled systems was being discussed in the general update thread (http://acuramdx.org/forums/showthre...92&pagenumber=2) and Warzau was closing any other related new threads(http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...&threadid=15132), but since the search function is busted since the server move, the forum is being flooded with new redundant threads.
As far as I can tell the search function can only search threads that have been created or that have been replied to after the move. |

My installation was very easy with no problems. Eject the old one, put the new one in, wait 30 sec. for the system to initialize. Then drove the car around the block for NAV to recognize where we are  and that was it.
However, I found an error in the new database which WAS correct in the old dB. 110 freeway in SoCal is shown as 710 in the 210-110-134 junction. Could be a typo or something, but it proves that they overhauled the database and mistakes were made. I'm positive that the old DVD was showing the right freeway, since this is my daily route to work and I use the NAV all the time. :3: |

Looks like another job of clever planing on the manufacturing side. One has to wonder why no one poaches the business from these guys. It seems they have the monopoly so service/support isn't really required.

ndahbar, I have an 04' MDX with Navi and the new tunnels do not show up correctly. The loop ramp from the Tobin Bridge onto the old expressway shows up though.
I would wait until the next update or the one after that to get all the BIG DIG stuff updated. Also, I've got the 'bread crumbs' all over the place from going through the new tunnels.

In order to provide accurate Big Dig information, the new software would need to get on the Internet every morning, go to Boston.com, and read about who's just been indicted or fired over the latest construction delay or cost overrun scandal. By merging that information with the published schedule it should be able to route you appropriately.
Actually, I kinda like the existing map software, which believes my MDX is swimming across the Fort Point Channel as I head into South Boston in the new Mass Pike section. It's my only "off-road" experience.
Seriously, I've been told that most of the Big Dig changes are not reflected in this new version. My personal interest is in the Lee/Lenox/Pittsfield MA area. I would love to hear from anyone who has info about improvements there. The current system has only the most major roads. |

Question:

Answer: No to both on the 04 MDX.
Maybe next year. I think the new 04 TL lets you do the A/C Fan speed, but am not sure.
You can request the NAVI find a post office, gas station, or restaurant by just asking with a voice command. You can also jump between the Map, Trip Computer, and others with voice. You can also ask what time it is. |

I did the update back just before xMas '03, then went on a long trip from DC to NC to W.Va back to DC. Everything worked about the same as old software. There are a few minor improvements, but none really worth $200. I bought this version because the write-up said that it had eliminated the "Now entering Unverified Area" message that always used to pop up just when you really needed to see where you were. Unfortunately, that "feature" was not eliminated and it still works just like last version. I recommend you wait until the next release. I wish that I had. |

Just installed Acura 3.30G Navi Disk. It's been on back-order for several months, but seems to be a noticable improvment and it arrived just in time, since we leave for vacation on Friday. Overall operation and feel is much the same as the delivery version. Install took about 60 seconds. After a 10 minute trip I noticed the following:
Slightly different Set-up screens; 100% voice control (easier to use) on all functions; Help Command available on all screens; Unverified Routing Option; usable screen-view is larger since the Map Scale Adjustment appears only when you zoom in or out; more color options; seems slightly faster with crisper graphics. Also, the turn distance count-down which comes up 1/4 mile before a turn is much clearer and easier to read. |

I was reading the FAQs for this update, and had a question for those who upgraded their NAV with version G !
Does the update allow you to control non NAV features (like A/C, Mode etc.) with your voice ? In my 2003 X, I can only use voice for Navigation related options, but the FAQs on the order site seem to suggest that you can now use voice commands for other stuff as well. I quote from the website:
"
30) What functions can the Voice System control?
a) Navigation functions (like asking the system to find the nearest restaurant, or gas station, changing map scale, or selecting icon types to display on the map).
b) The climate control system (temperature, A/C, fan speed, or mode).
c) Audio functions (like selecting an XM, AM, or FM radio station, playing a CD/DVD, or playing a tape).
d) To view the latest model information visit www.Acura.com
"
Can someone please clarify and post their experience !
Thanks, |

Hello Everyone,
Just wanted to find out from fellow 03X owners who have updated their NAVI, how the update is performing ? Have you found any new features in the update (aside from the additional voice commands, different voice, 3D etc),
Will the update actually allow me to control my AC and Stereo by voice ? I think the update has been out for enough time now, and I am considering buying it.
Any thoughts, opinions and observations will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

kamal,
I'm also an 03X owner and am thinking about updating. I just checked the Alpine web site and after putting in 2003 MDX got this message:
"Due to high demand, we are temporarily out of discs. We plan to have them in the Winter. Thank you for your interest."
Maybe a new version is right around the corner?!
I'm thinking a new disc won't allow the expanded control that you describe, but if it does sign me up! |
|
|
| kamalsyal |
Teledatageek,
I hope they have a new version coming out....but then we may have to wait for a few extra months, till they fix the bugs in this new version :(
From what I have been reading on the others posts here, the update does allow you to control the radio and a/c controls via your voice. I know that in the 04 and 05 X, you can do that, so maybe they added it for the 03 also. Guess we'll only know when we get the update right ??
I guess i'll wait till this update is available again, and then buy it, and see for myself !
Thanks,
kamal |

Is has been a disappointment for me:
- sometimes the voice says to turn right when the map shows a left turn. As a result, I don't trust the voice and must look at the map (distracting!).
- The "What time is it?" question is now totally ignored (it used to give me the time with the previous version).
- I have seen white dots in areas I have never been in.
I write to Alpine to report these problems (hoping I'll get a free update in January) |

Hey, I just checked the Acura/Alpine website and there is now a version 3.40B for 2003/2004 models. Unfortunately, they didn't update the FAQ, so no details other than what the website says:
"The current version is 3.40B. Due to high demand, the DVD disc is temporarily unavailable. The disc will become available again in late December, 04. This DVD serves as both the fall 04 update DVD, or a replacement DVD" |
