Wheel upgrade question - Click HERE for Original Thread

I'm thinking about upgrading my wheels to either 18" or 19" rims when my current tires wear out, so that I can use my stock wheels for snow tires. Also, I'm thinking that having lower profile tires will significantly help with cornering. I have browsed through tirerack website and saw few options there. My questions are;

1) How do I know if other 18" or 19" wheels (not listed by tirerack for MDX) will fit my MDX?

2) Can someone explain offset, and what is it for MDX? Are there other measurements that I need to know about?

3) Will 19" rims make the rider intolerable in terms of roughness and noise? I'm pretty used to harsh rides but don't want to be uncomfortable on long drives, etc. and I think road noise in MDX is bit louder compared to other luxury suvs.

I've never bought any aftermarket wheels before, so I'm not too familiar with how the compatibility issue works. Thought I bring up this question here before I call any vendors, mainly becaue then I can then look through the catalogs and pick out the models that I like most before making those calls. Thanks in advance.

Ok, please ignore question 3 above. I've started doing some search, and it seems like there are lots of posts related to that question.

i have upgraded to 20's and the ride is still very smooth just feels the road a little more i feel if your gonna spend the money go at least 20 inch looks great good luck on what you choose
hopeitsfriday
MaD-X.................20 inch wheel will help the MDX in cornering? You do realize this is a SUV you are driving, and you do understand the high center of gravity that it has and the physics behind it right?

"You do realize this is a SUV you are driving, and you do understand the high center of gravity that it has and the physics behind it right?"

Yes, I do understand this. Thank you for the reminder:) If I really wanted a real "significant" cornering upgrade, I'd have to lower it, stiffen up the suspension, lose weight, etc... but still it would be an suv - cornering ability isn't what I bought the MDX for. If you reread my first post, my PRIMARY intention for wanting a new set of wheels is to put snow tires on stock rims. It doesn't snow much here in the NW (although, we've had really bad freezing rain for last week or so), but I do about 20 ski trips a year, which justifies my spending extra $ for a set of snow tires. Here are my options:

1) 19" Mille Miglia Actions with Pirelli scorpions = ~$1900
plus Michelin Pilot Alpins for my stock rims = ~$500
Total = ~$2400

2) Michelin Cross Terrains to replace my stock tires = ~$600
plus 16" rims with snow tires = ~$900 to ~$1000 depending on type of wheel
Total = ~$1500 to 1600

3) continue to use Michelin Cross terrains...they handle fine on snow but snow tires would be better.

So, about $800-900 difference btw options 1&2. This is significant amount of $, but it's a good time to upgrade for the benefit of a lager wheel (better look) and lower side wall (I know, only modest improvement in handling). In any case, however, you would be very surprised how much difference the stiffness of tire sidewall makes on handling (and so does tire pressure - given that all other things are kept equal). I know this from my experimence from track events (not in MDX :)). I'm not really doing this for the looks, so I'm definitely not going with 20" (plus, I'm not really into stainless finish wheels). Again, I'm DEFINITELY NOT doing this for handling improvements. I just want to know if there's more I need to know besides the fact that stock rims are 5x114.3 with 45mm offset (I think I know what offset means now). Someone enlighten me if there's more I need to know in terms of compatibility, thanks.

Hello.
I ride on 19's with a 245/45/19 tire. I have Pirelli P Zero, which are a better performace tire. With my 19's I also lowered my MDX using H&R Springs which helped its cornering abilities. My MDX has alot less body roll than it used too. The 19's also do great on the highway. I like to go fast and they are very smooth. I had to get an allignment thou b/c my rims and tires are smaller than my stock but it rides great. I would recomend upgrading.
