Anyone had a ticket for illegal tint? - Click HERE for Original Thread

The legal limit for window tint in Ohio is 50%. I want to get the front windows so they match the back (I have concluded I will need at least 30-35%). My concern is that I will get a ticket for having illegal tint. I dont see the point in paying for this if it doesnt match or at least come close as that will annoy me even more!

How big of a difference is there between 50% and 35%?

I HAVE NOT GOTTEN A TICKET YET BUT MY DRIVER AND PASSANGER SIDE ARE 20% AND MY WHOLE WINDSHIELD IS 35 % ALSO 20 IS THE MATHC FOR FACTORY NOT 30 OR 35

no ticket for me - and my front window tint is almost limo level (hey, its hot here!)

I haven't put it on my mdx yet, however on my old car had it for years and never an issue

erck3,

Here in Hawaii, rarely will the police pull over a luxury SUV like the MDX for illegal tint. The real challenge is trying to pass the annual safety sticker inspection. Many safety check stations will use light meters to measure the percentage of light passing through the tint.:4:

Thee is always a chance you may get a ticket but here in California it is usually just the Highway Patrol who will bother you. One pulled me over a few months a couple of years ago for my tint but he was more interested in looking over the "x" and used the tint as an excuse! There is no fine with these tickets here - you must remove the tint and the vehicle inspected by CHP to prove you did so. Then you go and have it put back on...

We've got 22% SolarGard®, and it matches very well. I've got it on my truck, too, and it's just a little lighter than the factory. It looks close enough, so that if you didn't know, most people couldn't tell the difference. No tickets (yet, thankfully), but there are LOTS of vehicles with very dark tint around ATL. 35% is the limit in GA. It gets hot here, too. It does help with the heat, and it really makes the vehicles look much better when all the windows match. We had 35% on our 4Runner, (RIP), and it was way too light. It did help somewhat with the heat, but it didn't look as good as the darker stuff. The 35% installer would only warranty the legal shades, so this time, we've used a different guy. SolarGard® is really good film, and like I said, it matches very well. Go for it! :29:

No tickets here either...knock on wood. The limit here is 35%. About the inspection, just roll your window down all the way before going in for the inspection.

I never heard of anyone tinting their windshield up here in the northeast until today. You either have underground inspections or really good friends at the inspection station.

I haven't had a problem with my 20% tint (yet) in W.Va. that has a 35% limit. There's a state inspection, but it's pretty basic.

If you go for the tint, and if you're picky, you might want to research the best match for the X. My front windows are the same darkness as factory but have a cooler neutral-gray tint, and the rear windows with factory tint look slightly "warmer" with a hint of brown. I only noticed the difference when driving through the snow and had a white background to see better, but of course I notice it all the time now! From the outside, fortunately, it's nearly a perfect match.

Can you clarify? I have never tinted my windows and am thinking about doing my CL and the front windows on the MDX. If the law in Ohio is 50%, how would I pass if I used 20% How often do you have to get window tint inspection?
evoge
I meant that the W.Va. state inspection is pretty basic (at least at the local repair shop I went to) and I don't know anything about Ohio.

You might just stop by your inspection station or garage and casually ask how they check tint or if they even care as long as everything else passes. It's worth a visit at least.

how does this work?

is your legally tinted car in your state might be a problem in other states with tougher tint law? or it just go by your home state?

I guess my concern is that Ohio's limit is 50%. If it were 35% and I went with 20%, I would not be worried. I dont see the point in going with something, if its not going to match. Any ideas?

I'll admit that this is from a traflo's point of view, but why would anyone want to do something to their vehicle that would reduce their ability to see out?

I presume you were being sarcastic, Mr. Pawprints on the windshield. And what's a traflo?

BTW, who do I call to verify the legal tint level on an SUV in Tennessee?

It really doesn't reduce out visibility much at all, actually I hardly notice it. But it does reduce light and heat dramatically - and looks great from the outside.

I used the lightest gradient of illegal tint on the front sides. The installer told me it was the most popular one picked, because at first glance it does not look that dark.
It was SolarGard, and because there is more light in the front of the interior, thanks to the windshield, the front sides look a skosh lighter anyway than the rears.
But it does match nicely with the rear tint and the lower interior temperature is very noticeable over stock.
In the central valley it makes a big difference in summer.
Limit in California is 70% transmittability. I would say this is close to 50%.

Many of the cop cars have window tint here in Arizona. With temperature regularly hitting over 110, it's a necessity.

Actually, I was not being sarcastic -- I do not understand why anyone would want to cut down their own visibility, which tints do. As for "traflo," read it backward!

Well, I guess the "ol" part is for old, so I think I see now (pardon the pun) why you may not like tint on your windows. For most of us, it doesn't cut down on much of the interior-to-exterior visibility, mostly just heat and uv rays from the outside.

And good luck seeing through/around your paw prints on your windshield! ;)

I am speaking about TX here but for the most part you have to have a meter to measure the tint, very few cities have this meter, however DPS does and my brotehr go ticketed (8% tint) they recentlly changed the law here fro 35% to 25% I dont know of any tint manufacturers that sell 25% most are 20% or 35%. The kicker is that TX requires the installer to place a sticker on the window stating that it meets the % requirement, without this sticker you can be ticketed whether or not the tint is under/over the limit. You need to check your state law. When I lived in IL I had my front windshild tinted with 70% you could hardly tell but it made it nice reducung glare. I prefer a 20% its about the best that you can see out of and still have privacy inside.

Well, actually that is ironic, because if you go to a lot of retirement places across the nation, most of which are very sunny, darker than standard tint is quite common among those communities and for good reason. And believe me, they don't do it because it looks cool, but because it is cool.

Thanks DaleB, finally some advice addressing my concern when I started this thread. Not that I dint enjoy reading everyone else's comments on the issue. I will likely go with 35%. If what you claim is true, it should appear to be 40-50% and I am hoping thats enough to avoid attention. I have been eying other SUVs with front window tint, and your right about the windshield making the tint appear lighter than its rating.

Thanks again.

The MDX's tint has gone unnoticed so far (I had the most popular lightest illegal tint installed on the two front side windows), but I was pulled over one evening when a police officer trainee noticed that one of the headlights on my 1980 BMW was out. In addition to writing me up for the headlight, he wrote me up for the tint on the front side windows. Of course, I had to replace the headlight and remove the tint. The fixit ticket processing fee was $15, after I had the "repairs" signed off and verified by the police station. The verifying police officer said that it's important for officers to be able to see the driver's eyes while they zoom through intersections (for safety reasons, I suppose).

So, I had a good 23 year run with tint. In retrospect, I probably should have rolled down the windows quickly ... but the manual crank made that difficult.

For the MDX, I've considered removing the front side tint, but summer is approaching and the tint REALLY helps the interior comfort level.

Fortunately!! Otherwise in some states you might get stopped for not having a license plate at both ends of your vehicle.

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOO pissed!!! I got a ticket today for tint. D@rn cops had a point check set up around my area. This freaky city has nothing better to do then try every sneaky little trick there is to get every last dollar out od it's citizens. You would think the politicians and police commissioner would have better things to do with police manpower , like catch so GD criminals, improve city safety from terrorist attacks..you know LITTLE THINGS like that. I guess that would be make to much darn sense, heck it might even benefit some citizens...WE COULD'NT HAVE THAT NOW COULD WE...NOOOOO!! I just dont get it, I spend $40K on a SUV and I can't fix it up the way I want...BS..when that $40K was going into the economy I could'nt spend enough of it or fast enough to suit this greedy, money grubby, sleazy, dirty dealing, rotten money gouging ,POS city. Ladies and gentlemen, forget the idea of minding your business ,trying to be a law abiding citizen..it's a pipe dream!! You'ld be better off robbing, raping, murdering, drug dealing..no one bothers those types of citizens the cops are too busy setting up check points to get the real bad guys...the X owners with 35% tint...these are people bringing down society!!! But hey, there is a bright side, as the cop was giving me the summons he says," here's a form to fill out . It shows you how to get out of paying the summons." So you may be think, why give out the summons in the first place? Ahhhh... lets put on our thinking caps for a minute shall we...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I think I have it...it way for the city to gouge some of its citizens...A SCAM...A TRICK...A RIPOFF!! I really HATE NY!!! ROTTEN THIEVING APPLE!!!

I just had to vent, I appreciate your ear!

Why don't you tell us how you REALLY feel?

Seriously, don't blame you for being pissed. Well, I understand crime in NY is down from the old days. Maybe now they think it's time to go after......THE TINTERS!!!
Now I have seen cars, esp. poorly customized cheap small ones, with windows that look like black paint. And most of those folks drive like they can not see. When I see them around, I give them a wide berth.
dcyn
That is true but I have 35% tint..it's the light one.. you can see through it alot. The back tint ,from the factory, is twice as dark.
DaleB
I agree, but living in year round warmer climates I think makes you less susceptible to ticketing (as I knock on wood...).
tonsaphun
I hate it when they give out tickets for stupid things like this. I'm going to NYC in two weeks...this makes me think twice about taking my MDX there. I matched my front to my factory windows.

DCYN: Where was the checkpoint again? I will stay away from that area.

Checkpoints are usually random to catch people like you. (and me...)
