Low Speed Bucking - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi everyone! I have not been to the forum for quite a while...

My 69 Roadrunner Convertible has been keeping me "busy" as the winter here in Miami is perfect convertible weather!

I did notice a weird bucking on two occasions... back in December I drove to Disney World (about three hours at 80 mph give or take) and after the second rest stop, I noticed a pronounced bucking as the tranny shifted into what I guess was third at about 50 -60 mph.

It did it a couple of more times, especially if I lifted a little then accelerated (or tried to) then it stopped.

Then the other day, when cruising along at about 25 30 mph in a residential area, I noticed a bucking that reminded me a lot of my Mustang 5.0 if I left it in first gear (manual) and let it roll at idle.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Could be a tranny problem. But often masked are throttle position sensor problems, that can have very similar reactions to the throttle.
Hopefully, it is repeatable enough that a good tech could diagnose it failrly quickly.
If it is the transmission, it is likely to get worse.

Took mine in Acura of Peabody (MA) yesterday for diagnosing on the 18-25mph bucking. On the phone they kept telling me it's usually the EGR Valve. Tech hooked it up and took it out for a ride and felt it stuttering about a half dozen times. Took it back in and checked out the EGR. It was fine. They are ordering me another tranny.

My MDX only has 25k on it. Just started the symptons about 2k miles ago and steadily getting worse. It only occurs on light accelleration usually after being run for a while.

P.S. Sat in the new TL while there. For tall drivers it has tons of room. At 6'6" I had no leg or headroom problems. Cool car. Finally, thank you for listening Acura. Unfortunately it's not for my budget right now.

accmdx... That sounds like exactly the same problem I am having...I will have it looked at as soon as I go to the dealer for an oil change.

I hope the dealer does not try to screw me over...I have not found a good one in Miami yet... except for Tropical Chevrolet's service department..they are cool.

Of course, the crap that is the 95 Impala SS (I know there are some SS owners on here...so before you hit the button on the flamethrower..ask yourself if you really don't think the interior isn't the crappiest thing ever...) cured me of ever owning another Chevy again...

Why get a Vette when you can get a Viper? or an NSX for that matter?

Still, if this tranny problem goes away, I'll still be very happy with my MDX!

Well, here's 3 reasons....

Chevrolet Corvette: MSRP : $43.735 - $51,585

Dodge Viper : MSRP: $80,995

Acura NSX: MSRP: $89,000

Well yeah there is that...BUT....

I would be interested to know what the resale value on a 2000 Vette is vs the other two as a percentage of original purchase price

I'll bet the Vette owners get hit harder...

I'm just sour over the Impala SS.. and I'll tell ya...I almost got a Vette when I was getting rid of the Impala... but then I sat in it and felt a familiar feeling...the one you get when surrounded by cheap plastic.

Who knows...maybe the 05 will change my mind...I
DaleB
Well, you are out of my league! Considering the resale value of a car over 80K is sooo low on my priority list.
MannyE
AS much as I would love to be in that league, I am not. I am however, interested in the resale values of those three because the only way I would be able to afford them is to buy a used one.

But to return to our original argument... the why get a vette when you can get a viper or nsx...

I would love to check msrp of those three again after the c-6 goes on sale. I am willing to bet that they will get a little closer.

and really the zo6 is the one to compare to the viper and that will probably be even closer.

Well, I've never been able to spend a "Percentage", so if the Vette is down 35% after 3 years and the Viper is only down 30% then that is $24,000 loss on the Viper but only $17,500 for the Vette. Also, don't forget the loss of Sales Tax (most States) of about $5,600 for the Viper and $3,500 for the Vette. Disadvantage Vette
-5%, Advantage Vette $8,500! I'll take the $$$$.
MannyE
There are other factors involved as well. The ability of the Viper to hold value as opposed to the Vette has an impact on spending when you are in the used car situation. Last time I checked (about a year ago when I was deciding on a fun car purchase) Vipers and NSXs were holding steady at about 40 - 45K for 94s and 95s (IIRC NSXs might have even been a little higher)

Take a look at the going price of the average 94 Vette compared to a 94 Viper/NSX.

Then, and this is the important part, imagine each one being brought to you in front of the crowd at your company's annual Christmas party (or other event held at a ballroom in a hotel...you know what I mean)

I know I would rather see the Viper or NSX drive up! Corvettes are a dime a dozen. Doesn't meant they are any less a great driving car than the Viper or NSX (Vettes are probably even better drivers than Vipers), but the "nakedness factor" is much higher with the latter two choices.

I have GOT to stop hijacking my own threads....what exactly does this hav e to do with my transmission?

By the way....I didn't get a Viper, Vette, or NSX...I got a 69 Roadrunner convertible...go figure.

Good one!

I'm going to download that one!

My 2005 MDX is at the dealer right now for high and low speed bucking! The car feels like it is braking without me doing anything! But not only does it "brake" by itself at slow/coasting speeds, it's actually done it at 70mph! As I'm driving along it feels like the brakes are being pumped, and the car bucks rapidly. I have no control over it! The only thing I can do is brake--hitting the gas does nothing to stop it. My car only has 32,000 miles on it. I've performede regular maintenance at the dealer only! They replaced the EGR valve but have no clue why this is happening and only want the problem duplicated in order to diagnose it! I'm afriad to drive it on the highway... Did I mention that the bucking/braking occurs when I am slowly driving also... Can anyone tell me what's wrong?

My '01 MDX Touring has developed a troubling problem. The symptoms are as follows: Occasionally upon slight acceleration from a stop, the entire drivetrain seems to shudder like power is being interrupted. It is felt emphatically in the accelerator pedal and goes away after 3 or 4 oscillations... right away if I remove my foot from the pedal. This never happens when accelerating normally from a stop.. only when creeping along, like in slow traffic. It seems to occur between upshifts from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd gear ranges. Others have posted problems with "bucking", this may be the same problem.

The car has 62K miles on it, under an exended Honda warranty and I had the transmission fluid changed at the 45K service interval.

Anybody have any comments or suggestions?

Thanks, Mike

I took my 2005 MDX Touring in to be repaired for this problem 3 times. Each time the mechanics told me the problems had to do with an "emissions" code they got when they did the diagnostic. Today when I picked up the car the service manager told me that the problem occured WHILE HE WAS DRIVING MY CAR (which I gave him permission to do...) but that the car was in D4 and not D5..."perhaps that's why it is wildly bucking." I think that's insane! First off, I was in D5 EVERY time the bucking occured. Additionally, a violent bucking is unacceptable...and why being in D4 makes a difference, I'll never know. Needlesstosay, Acura is doing nothing to fix the problem, and I want OUT of the car and OUT of ACURA altogether! I've been offered no incentive on a new ACURA by the way...so it's a total loss. Only 35,000 on the 2 year old car! What a waste!

Took 2001 MDX (62k) into nearby dealership (Inskip Acura) with detailed letter describing problem including a statement of my awareness of the scope of the problems with 01/02 models transmissions. Was told that my Acura Care EXTENDED warranty (75k OR 6 YRS) would only cover the cost of diagonosis time IF A COVERED PROBLEM was found. Otherwise, I would be on the hook for labor time for a "no problem found". I agreed, but stated I would be looking for a credit for THAT bill later when the transmission failed! Got a call back same day - they are ordering a transmission, torque converter (mfg. rebuilt) and ECU which will be installed resulting in a $50 deductible liability for me under the terms of the Extended warranty (it cost $1600, which looks like a good deal about now). Let the dealer you are knowledgeabe about the problem and be factual, professional and polite.. it worked for me!
