all, are you supposed to check the ATF level with the engine on or off?

With engine running and sufficiently warmed up to operating temp. So drive around town for 10-15 minutes and check the hot level. Otherwise, check with car running (on level surface again obviously) and use the cold level indicators.

Excuse me, but where did you get that info? SOP for Honda and Acura is engine OFF. RTFM (read the [furnished] manual), which says, in part: 1. Park the vehicle on level ground and shut off the engine.

I stand corrected, thanks for pointing that out. My Toyota checks with the engine running. I just checked the Acura shop manual and it is with the engine off. But you still need to bring it up to operating temperature.

OK,

I brought the X in for service and had them do an ATF drain and fill ( my wife prefers they work on the car than me for some reason). I then remembered this post and decided to check the ATF level. Well, they had it filled by, I'm estimating 1.5 quarts. About an 1.5 inch above the hot full mark!

They backed it off again and I let it sit for 15 minutes, started it up put itn park and turned engine off and checked again. Still 1/2 inch over the hot mark.

This time, they drained and filled and got it just right. Next time I do the drain and fill myself. Wasted a full morning driving it back and rechecking).

Do you think I could have hurt the tranny by driving it about 45 miles overfilled?

There's a good chance that no harm was done, but make sure it's noted in your records that it was over-filled by the dealer on such-and-such date, how many minutes/miles it was driven, and what the dealer did to fix the problem. This way, warranty should be maintained.

DIY. ATF changes are easier than oil changes once you have a system to add fluid through the dipstick, e.g., a clear tube and a funnel or a small spout screwed onto the quart bottle. Don't even need to jack up the X. (I just haven't figured out how to remove the plug fast enough to avoid the ATF stream--probably a 3/8" wratchet extension would help.)

I get my Honda Z-1 ATF for $3.60 a quart at http://www.hondiscountparts.com/HO_...Fluid_list.html Free shipping for orders $50 or more, so I buy 16 quarts of ATF and have enough for 4 1X changes.

I have bought by mail order ATF Z1 from this dealer:
http://www.fairhondapartsforyou.com...ake=replacement

Price was about $3 USD and shipping and handling was $3.95 for any order.

Their site does not list fluids but they do ship them. You must ask for a quote by email or by phone. They accept orders by phone only.

That works for me :D
