'04 Doors out of alignment--BEWARE - Click HERE for Original Thread

well, from DAY 1 at the dealership, i noticed that the doors (including the rear hatch) took more effort to close and open. i did mention this to my salesman upon delivery, and he simply replied that i make an appointment with their service department. i thought it had something to do with the added noise dampening material and such.

so, a couple of weeks ago, i return to the closest dealership to my house and had them look at it. after a day of trying to adjust them, my service advisor mentioned they did everything possible, short of bringing it to a body shop. he also mentioned that he was going to do some 'homework' on this problem.

well, i call them back today following up with this issue. 'I'm glad you called,' he replied, 'as the regional liason heard about your problem and would like to investigate further personally.' so, it sounds like Acura is definitely aware of this problem, and want to inspect these vehicles as they show up. sounds like a potential recall on some 2004 models. btw, i am also having them change out the headlight assemblies due to condensation build-up(especially after my long weekend in lake tahoe)

so, 2004 owners out there--BEWARE

Tim might be able to shed some light on this. . .

I had this problem also. Passenger side rear door (04 MDX)was hard to close. Took it in and they made it easier to close but there was a quarter inch gap between the door and the frame. Complained to the service manager and had to bring it back in for them to fix it again. Glad/sorry to hear that this is another potential recall.

Didn't you say that the gap was 1/2inch earlier. Keep your 'stories' straight, would you please? You big story teller!

I find the fit and finish exemplary on most any MDX I have seen. It's still the same basic body they have been stamping out and assembling since Fall 2000. Hopefully these are isolated defects.

As a manufacturer continues to try and decrease the noise level inside the vehicle, it naturally gets more "sealed" up. The balance between closure effort for the LAST door/hatch and driving noise is a constant battle for all car makers.

If a particular door is hard to close with ANOTHER door/hatch still open, then you may have a problem. Otherwise, you're simply driving a vehicle that's been improved from the noise perspective.

i am aware of this feature. i know some of the higher end cars have the capability to slightly lower the windows when closing the doors. unfortunately, the door/hatch alignment issue is still apparent when there is an open door, so there goes that possibility:o

i'll make sure to update everyone with the regional rep's findings. hope we can resolve this problem with minimal pain.

UPDATE

MDX is still at the shop. The regional rep looked over the problem, and essentially gave the thumbs up to do all necessary work to correct the alignment. well, my service advisor has been keeping close tabs with the body shop and looks like there's about 1/32" problem that they're still trying to get right.

luckily for us, we're not in a hurry to get her back--as long as she's fixed right, we don't mind the wait!

btw, already had the headlight housings replaced under warranty.

It definitely would not turn into a "recall." Recalls are for emissions or safety-related defects. This sort of situation, at most, would turn into a Technical Service Bulletin, where owners who complain would get it fixed, on more than a case-by-case basis.

With my 02' X..

I found the driver side rear door hard to close.. and is a bit off if you stand behind the rear bumper and look at it.

When I bring it in to the dealer, they just gave me a lonaer (a TL) and send my X to body shop to fix it.. was done in a day, I picked up the X next morning, paid nothing.

Still love my X!

FINAL UPDATE
just got the 'X back from service. let me tell you, nothing but high marks for their work and follow-up. doors are all okay, as well as the headlites and additional door edge trim. there's a local shop they go through to do the work, and let me tell you...much better quality than my 2001 MDX. and very reasonably priced to boot--$27.50!

kudos to brett @ hopkins acura service and the guys at trimline here in fairfield!
