Keep in mind, this test was done (or updated from a previous test) on Sept. 2001.

Xcel is going to be plenty unhappy to read about the Walmart ST--as I am after just putting one in my Teg.

I would take the study with a grain of salt. Notice that the site was last updated in 2001. Also, all the ST filters at my Walmart are made in the USA. I have researched the filer for my other ride the ST 3614, and the construction looks decent especially for a $1.97 filter. I am not worried since I am not going to use them for extended OCIs (oil change intervals).

just my opinion

It is a 'weak' study compared to some I've seen. Some of the advice on extended intervals is good, but largely taken from "OilChange Bob" it would seem.

I bought the Acura filters way in advance after taking delivery almost 18 mos. ago. I don't expect to change. If I did it would probably be the Mobil 1 filter anyway, which always seems to come out on top.

Hi Guys:

___We have already debunked this 2001 report here in this forum as well as Bob is the Oil Guy’s site. Dale, I believe you were even involved in that thread, weren’t you? You only need to look at the stamp on top of the ST’s in particular to figure out this guy is full of himself. Next would be the SAE Single and Multi-pass efficiency’s … The ST and Bosch “SAE Tested” ratings are 98 and 99% respectively. Add up the semi-synthetic media, add up the best ADBV in the business, add up the costs, and look at SAE’s own tests.

___Tell you what, go to your local Walmart, pick up an ST-7317. You don’t even have to cut it open if you don’t want to. Afterwards, go to your local Autozone and look at a Bosch, STP, and a Mobil1 filter. Just look at them very closely is all.

___Good Luck

Oh, hell...I jump into most all threads...but I believe you are the one that did the research to a conclusion which we all pretty much agreed on. Sorry to bring up old trash.....

Ok, feeling a little better now. I missed (or forgot) the debunking part the first time around.

You know, we talk about this every once in a while.....is anyone interested in conducting a sort of nonscientific "cut em open to see what's inside" test for the group here? If so, I'll donate a couple of filters to the cause, and maybe we can get a few other people to do the same with their favorite brands and see what kind of results we get.

I am not sure what would be gained in all honesty. We are all fairly enlightened, mechanically inclined, and/or have some technical background. We have a couple of licensed mechanics on the forum who could probably do as good an assessment as anyone else.
But do we really have an 'oil filter' expert? I am just not sure we will gain much beyond what we already know. But others may have other input of course.
It appears most favor just staying with the Honda filter, some prefer Super Tech and/or Mobil filters, others the better Fram, or pay a premium for a more beefy K&N or Amsoil filter.
But if someone is more adventurous let them have at it!

Probably not too much to be gained on a scientific level, but it would make for a darn interesting thread :)

I don't know what the filter test would prove either.

Better test would be to send the oil out for analysis. You'll get a detailed report of what's in the oil, metals, and percentages. This is really what we all want to know anyway. If I have high levels of aluminim in the oil, I better take some action soon. This will also tell you how well the filter is working.
