This is a photo guide for the installation of the Infinity 6002I speakers in the front and rear doors in an 2004 MDX. I basically followed the earlier thread from Markable for a 2003, however, the 2004 has a slightly different set-up which requires a slightly different installation. This is only ONE example of how it can be done, I am sure there are others!

Infinity 6002I (6.5" speakers, ~$50/pair, purchased at sounddomain.com, total cost for 2 pairs $105.75 (free shipping/insurance)).

Metra Turbowire Wire Harness ("converts" factory modular speaker plug to standard pronged speaker connectors, $5.99/pair, purchased at Best Buys (buy at install shop; not inside store), total cost for 2 pairs $11.98 plus tax).

Tools Needed:

Philips head screwdriver, standard screwdriver, drill, drill bit (3/32").

Sound Impression:

Sound is much improved over the crappy stock Bose Speakers.

Overall:

Easy install (i.e. no additional parts needed other than noted above, just needed to drill several small holes to mount the front speaker and rear speakers), with dramatic improvement in sound. Total Installation time should be about 1 hour. Took me a little longer to figure out the rear speakers and take pictures. This is a relatively easy installation.

I did not provide detailed pictures for every step. If you need step by step instructions, please refer to marable's thread as well as this one.

Good Luck!

Use this to convert the plug to fit the new infinity speakers:

For the front door speaker install, It is very similar to Marable's instructions. All you need to do is pop the speaker grill cover off by using a flathead screwdriver. Put the screwdriver in the slot under the window switch and pry it open, the cover should pop and from there, just pull slightly and the rest of the cover should come off.

Once you have the cover off, use the phillpshead screwdriver to unscrew the 3 screws holding the speaker to the door. Disconnect the speaker by squeezing the connector's sides and pulling on the speaker wire.

Take the turbowire connector and connect it to the existing connector in the door.

For the new speaker, you will need to drill 2 or 3 (if you want)new holes, because the 4 screw holes on the Infinity speaker do not line up with the 3 from the Bose speaker. I did use the top hole that existed for the Bose speaker as my starting point and then marked a new hole on each side of the speaker, using the Infinity speaker as a guide to mark the new holes.

Drill the holes using your drill. The plastic is thin enough that you will drill through it in a split second.

Once you have the new holds drilled, connect the speaker using the turbowire connector and using the three existing screws that held the Bose speaker, attach the new speaker.

You can, if you want, use 4 scews to hold the speaker, I just decided that three would be sufficent to hold the speaker in place. I used the existing top hole for the old speaker because the screw holds a little tighter because it was made for a screw. Remember, you are screwing into plastic, so do not over tighten the screws.

Remember to turn the tweeter up and to the rear of the car for best results.

When done, pop the cover back on and you are done!

That's all it takes

The rear speakers are a bit harder, but not much harder. The Bose speakers are screwed into a white bracket, which used to be a rainguard in the '01-'03. I am not sure that I would classify the '04 version as a rain guard, but you will need to unscrew the speaker and then disconnect the speaker by again squeezing the connectors sides and pulling on the speaker.

Once the speaker is disconnected, you will need to unscrew the white bracket from the door.

Once you have the bracket off, you will need to attach the supplied metal ring to securely attach the Infinity speaker.

Here is what the bracket and ring adapter look like:

To attach the metal ring, I again used the top existng screw hole as my starting point and aligned the metal bracket so that I could at least use three screws to hold the metal ring to the bracket. I found that the best postion that would make the metal ring fit flush against the bracket and provide the best spacing of screws was to use the top screw hole and make new holes on each side of the white bracket using the holes in the metal ring as a template.

Here is the white bracket marked for the new holes:

Once you mark the position of the new holes, you just need to drill them or you can use a little auger tool to drill the hole.

I found that if you use the existing top hole and align the metal bracket so that the 4 holes that will hold the new speaker are north/south east/west there are several ways to position the metal ring that will work. I chose this way because I wanted the speaker to fit in the door straight up and down so that the connectors were on the bottom, where the is more room to fit in the door.

Also, I felt that where I drilled the holes in the white bracket would also hold a screw better.

Here is the metal ring properly postioned on the white bracket:

I placed blue X's next to the holes that I used to attach the metal ring to the bracket. If you look, you should be able to see them.

Once you have drilled the new holes, attach the bracket to the door using the existing screws, then attach the metal ring to the bracket in the door. You can't attach the metal ring until the bracket is on the door, because you will not be able to reach the screws to attach it to the door.

When it is attached, it should look like this:

Now that the bracket is attached to the door, use the 4 tiny screws that came with the Infinity speakers to attach the speaker to the metal ring. They are very tiny, so be careful that you do not drop them in the door.

When you are finished, it should look like this:

Remember to turn the tweeter to face up and to the rear and replace the cover and you are done.

Here is a picture of the stock Bose speaker. Believe it or not, it appears that they were made even cheaper in the '04 version. They are no longer made out of metal, but plastic. Bose should be ashamed to have their name on the speaker. Look at the size of the tiny magnet.

Well that's it! Enjoy your music and good luck!

The sound is much better as other have noted in earlier installs!

Thanks for everyone on this forum, I can't imagine owning another car that does not have such a forum!

Great pics/instructions.

When you say turn the tweeter up... do you mean install the speaker upside down? Or did you actually force the tweeter to face up?

Thanks cycler15,

The Infinity 6002I's come with a movable/rotatable tweeter. You can rotate the tweeter which is in the middle of the speaker and tilted. Rotate the tweeter so that it is facing up and to the rear. That way the sound comming from the tweeter is directed at the person in the seat. The speakers are below and in front of the person sitting in the seat.

I am by no means an expert, but that is what I read in others posts to do.

Anyone else who want's to add their 2 cents is welcome.

Enjoy!

where did you purchase you speaker wire adaptor?
rerodgers
Speaker Wire Adapter Purchase:

I bought it at the Best Buy Car Stereo Installation center. It is usually behind the actual store. They have a wall of various connectors for every make and model. The one you need is called honda speaker connector (72-7800).

Thought this old post deserved a new thanks.

I just installed my 6002i's this morning. Piece of cake, especially with the pictures and instructions. Fronts took about 5-10 minutes each, backs were a little more of a pain in making sure everything was mounted tightly.

But all-in-all, no more than an hour to replace all 4, and they sound great! Thanks again!

I found the Metra 72-7800 from cardomain.com for $5.95/pair and I wonder if these are the same with the one that you bought from BestBuy as it stated 'CL / MDX 1997-2003' and my MDX is 2004. If these are the same then I can save a trip to BestBuy as I can order these along with the speakers from cardomain.com.

Thank you very much for your help.

Got mine (2 pairs from cardomain. They even gave me a small price reduction even though the price match I had did not qualify since it was not from an authorized dealer) and installed. Significant improvement as noted be you all. Thanks for the inspiration.
