How are you guys

I will get new MDX, SS/Ebony, tomorrow. Finally.

But I have a question. How difficult to install accessories?

I am planning to install, Side Step(Oem Chrome), Lower Trim, Fender Flares, BSM(Wide Version), and Tailgate Spoiler. Those are hard to install by Do-It-Yourselfer ? I saw Instructions from Tim's Website. Some of them have Warning Sign that do not do yourself. However I saw some threads that installed themselves.

Like BSM & Fender flares require air temp. at least 60F, but In Atlanta temp is below 20 F right now. So I am thinking that I let dealer do those, but I do not know about Side Step, Tailgate Spoiler, Lower Trim. I am not a handy guy. I have to buy some drill bits and tools first in order to install those.

Dealer asks me to much. I see Tim's price and I cannot justfy dealer's price.

What your opinions & experiences?
Please let me know ASAP before I go there tomorrow.

thank you guys again.

The only things I do my self that I can recall:
Sun roof visor
Side window visors
Mud flaps
carpet inserts
Wood piece for DVD unit rear ceiling
Bra

All other components, I have the dealership install "after" purchase !

Side steps are very easy, just a lot of bolts. You may want to SEARCH for specific accessories; e.g. there has been much discussion on sidestep and BSM installation. BSM is also a reasonable do-it-yourself. I did steps, BSM, and roof rack (removal) on the old '01. I'll do BSM and steps on the '04 very soon.

Don't let the dealer pressure you into getting it all done "right now" just so they can get their marked up goods on your X.

Anything that's not DIY can be done by a competent installer or shop.

In other words, NEVER include accessories in your financing !

All easy, just wait on the stick on accesories and do them when its warmer. You will say alot on install and part prices.

Just installed my side step (chrome) 2 days ago. Got it from Tim (thanks Tim). Dealer cost $750 (no way!!!) so I saved about $250. And its very easy.

The tailgate DEFLECTOR was not a particularly difficult install, probably 2 hrs start to finish (do a search, lots of threads on this). I expect the spoiler isn't much different, except I think it has 6 bolts instead of 4. Drilling the holes is more unnerving than difficult.

Good luck!

kdw88, I've done self-install on all the items that you list, either on my mdx or my sister's (I did 2 tailgate "deflectors" and not "spoiler"). I've subjectively listed them from most difficult to easiest.

1. fender flares
2. bsm (aftermarket - but same procedure)
3. lower trim
4. tailgate "deflector"
5. side steps

Fender flares and bsm aren't that difficult, but you get one chance to get them aligned properly. I had no really problems. I had them aligned according to the directions, had them taped on with a masking tape to ensure they were straight, then permanently attached them. Lower trim and tailgate deflector both requires some drilling, but all the hole are already pre-marked, so you know exactly where to drill. If you have some experience with a drill, you can do this. Side step is just a lot of bolts and nuts, using holes that are already there. Make sure you follow the instructions exactly, and you should have no problems. Good luck.
