Tire Pressure Monitoring Question (TPMS) - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi all. Acura finally took me out of my "lemon" '01 X and put me in a new '04 yesterday. Some very nice upgrades! MUCH quieter, smoother tranny, peppier.... but I digress. I have a question about the TPMS.

The salesperson said that the TPMS monitors the pressure of all 4 tires and will alert me if the pressure gets low in any tire. However, he wasn't sure exactly how the system worked. It could function by evaluating each wheel independently and notifying when the pressure dropped below a pre-set threshold (e.g., 24 PSI). Or, it could monitor each wheel and then compare the results to the other 3 wheels, notifying when one tire was a certain number of PSI below the others.

Anyone know which it is? Or perhaps neither? Or both? Thanks!

Additional question regarding TPMS:
Do they prevent you from having higher pressure(like safety valve)
I tried to pump up my new tires to 35 psi and after 3 days pressure was back to 32 psi in all 4 tires.

Unless all your tires were leaking, they should not lose more than 1 psi every month or two, worse case.
Temperature is the big factor. You should always check them when they are cool.
I have an older (2002) MDX, but my understanding is the TPMS simply lets you know if an individual tire drops below 24 psi. And that's all it does.

Thanks
I will try to pump them up again and see what happens.

Do a SEARCH; recent threads have discussed in detail how the system operates - scans of the service manuals with diagrams are included in these threads.

Thanks for your help, but I did a SEARCH before I posted. None of the previous posts (including the scanned service manual pages) seemed to directly answer my question: is the system based on relative or absolute measurements?

Seems to me that the sensors must be "absolute" Note that it is able to sense when two tire are low. Everything about this system seems to preclude a simple comparison/relative measurement. Although I guess that I am not "absolutely" certain.

I agree with your conclusion. Seems that if the system were based on relative measurements, it wouldn't throw off bad readings in extreme climates, since all tires would be impacted equally by the exterior temperature.

Remember, the federal ruling states manufacturers are to incorporate a system that will indicate when a tire is dangerously low.
They are not going to do much more than that. Nor do I think anything more is necessary.

I think the tire pressure sensor system works great. In the middle of nite on freeway, it alerted me to a low tire in left rear. I wouldn't have felt it tell it was too late to get off the freeway.javascript:smilie(':)')

Thought it was interesting that the 04 MDX tire pressure monitor light won't go on until you lose 25% of the recommended tire pressure.

I think I also read that the tire pressure monitor on the wheel is on the valve stem. Isn't that a problem if you take it a shop to get new tires? I thought valve stems got replaced when you put on new tires?
