What are these new ads? - Click HERE for Original Thread

You may be wondering about the new Google ads that appear on the top of every forums page. These come from AdSense, a new way of generating revenue. Ads come from Google, where they try to display ads specific to site's content. Revenue is generated based on the number of click-throughs. So, the more you click on the ads, the more revenue goes towards supporting this site!

Thanks!

So does that mean the actual product advertised could vary? I see no problem with them; hope they work and provide a win-win for all involved.

The way it works is simple. As an advertiser, you sign up with Google AdWords, give them your budget, give them your add and a bunch of keywords. If one goes to google.com, performs a search, and one of the keywords matches advertiser's keywords, his ad will show up on the right side of google.com.

Same applies here, instead of the ad showing up on google.com, it will show up on this site. Instead of google matching search keywords, it will match the content of this site to advertisers. Great idea in my opinion. It is truly a win-win.

I guess acuramdx.org does not endorse the third party content related ads, since they are not moderated in any way. Maybe a note should be put up somewhere ...

Fine with me as long as they don't fade in and out from the middle of the page. Those are the only ones getting past filters. :3:

Yea, those are evil. Every once in awhile you get lucky and at least have a moving-target 'X' to close it. But lately it seems they've done away with that and you're forced to watch and wait.

I noticed that we now have web robots "browsing" the boards:confused: Prior to grabbing this screen capture I noticed that 6 web robots (all Google) were active. What is a web robot and what do they do? Note that the robots contribute to the "Currently Active Users" count, will that effect speed and enhance error message login problems?

Edited: we had 10 web robots at 3:31 (CST)
Edited: 3:44; new screen capture, more robots from more sources

The bots have minimal bandwidth hit. They used to hit my site frequently, and the total bandwidth they used was next to nothing. You can block the Googlebot by denying 64.68.82.* access, but then we would significantly drop from search hits. It was either NG or Time/Newsweek a few issues ago had a cool chart describing how the Google and its bot work. I'll see if I can find an online version and post its link here.

We had always bots crawling out site, however I just installed a little hack where the forums software actually identifies each bot, so we can track which pages it's actually crawling. Pretty neat actually.

How about cookies? I'm not a computer expert, but I heard many sites attach cookies to each computer and monitor all activity without our consent, plus potentially obtaining personal info. In fact, this site and most others don't even let us login with them turned off. Just in case, I erase cookies every week, but would like to know if it's not necessary (they're nice so we don't have to login every time though). What's the deal with that?

It's fascinating how advanced technology has become.

Good weekend people.

Attaching cookies to track the internet usage is called spyware, and that's just plain wrong. This site doesn't do it, the banners don't do that either.

As far as cookies in general, in your options you can indicate whether you would like to browse this site with cookies or not. By indicating NO, a session ID will be used in your URL to track who you are, i.e. if you are logged in or not.

Crawling is right! Just noticed these bots and one, Web Robot Spider, has been on the "Hottest Babe's" thread for over 45 minutes.

Another, Google, was playing Donkey Kong in the arcade?

As I mentioned on another thread (Zafer provided a link to this one) they seem to be slowing the site down. Google was logged on 12 times. I was having a problem loggin in and apparently these bots have bogged down the site.

A long time ago I was told I dance like a robot, long before the 'robot' was ever popular. Timing has not been my strongest point.. :D

There are 5 of them browsing the site now.

They can run but they can't hide. :runaway:
