Hello Y'ALL!
Great board...
My wife and I are in the market for a 2004 MDX (Base Model) here in Northern VA. I have a 2003 Acura TL (has leather) and it has been a great car.
However, my wife gets a bit queezy when she sitsin it because of the leather smell (funny because her leather COACH bags make her feel great!...go figure). She just test drove the MDX and stated that she had to roll down the window a few times to keep from getting sick.
Our other choice of vehicle is the Pilot (cloth interior). We really like the MDX (the Pilot is a great SUV as well), but the leather "sickness" may make us choose the Pilot.
Has anyone had issue like this? What can be done to lessen the new leather smell?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

When we purchased our MDX, it had that "new car/new leather" smell. I personally like the smell. However, after owning it for a few months, the "new car/new leather" smell has dissipated and it is not as noticeable. I won't say it is gone, but it is definitely not as strong.
Enjoy!

PNGATOR, I personally love the new car smell which includes the leather smell.
In your situation I would go ahead and buy the MDX and just use (read: enjoy) it exclusively myself for 3 months, and once the smell wears off, the wife may get to drive it.
They sell these odor removing air sanitizers, I wonder if they help remove the leather smell? |

A friend of mine had a similar problem but things got resolved automatically. Read on!
While they were on a long distance trip, the kids accidentally left a big packet of McDonald's French Fries over night in the car. Trust me, there was no new leather smell after that. Funny thing, the smell of fries didn't last after acouple of days either. |

As one who picked up the X right off the truck, and took it home with plastics and everything, and I can tell you it never had leather smell; there's a ton of vinyl and plastic on that car (3rd seat is all vinyl), just like most competing ones. To be fair, the only cars that have had it were my expensive luxury cars. You can also have it on luxury SUVs, which the X is not (honda calls it 'near-luxury'), like the Range Rover or Lexus LX/GX, but they cost 50% more. Only fine leather (from connolly, bader, etc.) will have that great smell, but acura only uses it on the NSX.
The good news is the 'smell' goes away quickly on the X. In no time you'll have the 'McDonalds' smell instead :p

Has your wife's reaction to the TL improved over time? Due to the fact that she gets queezy in the both the TL and the MDX may mean its an Acura thing:confused: Bottom line if her reaction to the TL has not diminished over time who's to say the MDX will improve over time? Of course Honda makes both the Pilot and the MDX; so be sure of her queeziness in the Pilot as well. Good luck. |

| Sounds like she could be allergic to something in the materials that HONDA/ACURA uses.....I have read something to this some time ago.....Just food for thought ! I could be the carpet, the chemicals in the dash, leather etc...... |
