Who here thinks that all the companies who spent millions on post half-time commercials should receive a refund?
I’m still in a state of shock! (In a good way of course.) Go Janet! :D

Commercials????? I forgot about the commercials after watching Justin Timberlake expose one of Janet Jackson's melon's at the end of their show

Simply amazing and certainly premeditated:28:
The final lyric of the song goes, "Going to have you naked by the end of this song." |

The only commercial I truly enjoyed was the old couple, fighting for the bag of chips. FUNNY!
The AOL ones weren't that good. |

| Loved the Bud Lite "dog" commercial with the border collie and the "mutt" displaying their beer retrieval training. |

how old is Janet? time is taking its toll.. is she even more 'pale' than "the gloved one"? while the uptight NFL front office folks will deny knowing about the 'stunt', you know it will be prime water cooler talk -- as oposed to competing networks lingere bowls...
Bud border collie vs 'nut dog' is definately my choice for best "real men" ad...
REFUNDS?!? How about CBS getting paid EXTRA -- this thing was an "edge of your seat cliffhanger" through the second part of the 2nd QUARTER until time expired -- memorable, Pats fans will never forget this!
How about the AIG commercial -- one of the last shown -- simple, to the point, appropriate & perfectly placed. |

I don't get why it was a big surprise. Last Wednesday MTV promissed that there would be 'Shocking Moments'.

Janet Jackson's Super Bowl Show Promises 'Shocking Moments'
"I don't think the Super Bowl has ever seen a performance like this," Duldulao added. "The dancing is great. She's more stylized, she's more feminine, she's more a woman as she dances this time around. There are some shocking moments in there too. It's a lot of pressure, there's so many creative people and creative artists, you want to make sure everything is different, and I think she's going to do that. She's doing her job well."
Why do you think she had the tip covered like that anyway? |

| A few of the commercials were pretty good but the halftime show was just horrible IMHO. From the lip-syncing, to the bad performances, to the pathetic staged Janet - Justin act at the end. Absolutely awful. |

I have no doubt in my mind (OK may a teensy weensy one) that the flashed breast was staged; the pre-announced promise of "Shocking Momments, the rip-away bodice (it did NOT tear or rip), the metallic nipple "pastie", and the undeniable fact that the final lyric of the song they sang goes, "Going to have you naked by the end of this song."
Accident, yea right! Although now the teensy weensy part; in the photos of her afterward (see zafer's post in the Super Bowl thread) she sure looks surprised, shocked, maybe even embarrassed or ashamed
 Is she that good an actress? |

On Monday, Federal Communications Commission chief Michael Powell said in a statement that he was outraged by the halftime show, calling the Timberlake-Jackson incident ''a classless, crass and deplorable stunt.''
Powell said he has instructed the FCC to "open an immediate investigation into last night's broadcast,'' vowing it would be ''thorough and swift.''
Earlier, an FCC spokeswoman, Suzanne Tetreault, said it was launching a routine investigation because it had received complaints. |

... I hope the FCC comes down with a precident setting fine and some attention getting punishment:1:
From zafer's Drudge Report link:
Top CBS executives approved a musical skit where Janet Jackson would expose her breast during the MTV-produced Super Bowl half-time concert, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.
"The decision to go forward went to the very top of the network," a well-placed source explained from New York.
"I'll get you naked by the end of this song," sang performer Justin Timberlake, moments before he ripped off Jackson's top, exposing a bare breast -- the nipple covered by a metal 'solar' nipple medallion.

| Is this any different than when Lil Kim wore that pasty to the Grammy's in 1999? Looks like the same thing to me. Boob hanging out with the nipple covered. Just my $.02. |
|
|
| msu79gt82 |
Two actuallys:
Actually her nipple was NOT covered, it stuck through the "solar" medallion:eek: and ...
Actually it was the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards and NOT the Grammy's, so yes it is very different!! |

I unfortunately missed the Janet episode. I was bottle feeding the newborn with mama's best. My perspective has somewhat changed since my wife started breastfeeding the baby...I won't elaborate....but whatevery 'excitement' Janet tried to stir by exposing herself, really wouldn't do too much for me, especially in such an unexpected forum like the SuperBowl halftime show.
Now if she wanted to perform down at the Chitah Club, that would get a much more positive reaction.:D  |
|
|
| mdxxxx |
| CBS execs, Janet, and Justin are getting exactly what they wanted... the more hype, and ridiculous over-exposure (no pun intended) this incident receives, the more free pub they receive, and the public continues to get played like a violin. |

msu,
Points well taken. I couldn't actually tell that the nipple stuck through. I wasn't sure what it was when I first saw it. I thought it was fake, like renov8r mentioned, because it was so pale.

Michael Wilbon, from ESPN’s PTI, stated it best… “ Children, these are breast. :4: Boys, someday, if your lucky, you’ll get to see some.” :5:
Yes, it may have been inappropriate, but the government getting involved over spilt MILK! (No pun intended, however, a “got milk?” commercial would have been icing)

I have to be honest here and say I missed the entire halftime show and a part of the third quarter due to picking up our Baby Back ribs from Chili's, mmmm.

Half of Singer's Rack in US Custody
Just hours after singer Janet Jackson shocked the world by exposing her right boob at the conclusion of Sunday’s Super Bowl halftime show, Attorney General John Ashcroft ordered the offending boob detained “indefinitely,” Mr. Ashcroft confirmed today.
“Janet Jackson’s right boob has been taken into custody and sent to Guantanamo Bay for questioning,” Mr. Ashcroft told reporters in a Washington briefing. “We’d very much like to know what the boob knew and when it knew it.”
Ms. Jackson’s right boob was detained under a little-known provision of the Patriot Act which enables the government to detain celebrity body parts that make surprise, naked appearances at nationally televised sporting events.
Under that provision, Mr. Ashcroft explained, Ms. Jackson’s right boob will not have access to a lawyer and could face a military tribunal at some point in the future.
When asked about Ms. Jackson’s left boob, Mr. Ashcroft said that it is not a suspect at this time but that it remains “a boob of interest.”
“We would like to know if the left boob knew what the right boob was planning to do,” Mr. Ashcroft said. “It strains credulity to imagine that the right boob acted alone.”
Elsewhere, experts around the world confirmed that moments after Ms. Jackson’s right boob fell out of its housing, Western civilization fell as well.
Dr. Milton Campeaux of the University of Minnesota said that experts were “surprised” that Ms. Jackson caused Western civilization’s long-awaited collapse.
“We all expected a Jackson to do it, but not Janet,” he said. |

The response which involves every agency covering their rear ends, is way more obscene than the event itself.
But then again, one exposed boob could not be very newsworthy without the NFL, CBS, and all the other participants strutting their collective egos and pointing fingers. Amazing!
Back to the commercials, I don't think they were up to the caliber of some previous years. |

I agree. Most years we have about 75% excellent commercials. This year we only had about 25% excellent commercials. Amazing when you consider the amount companies spend for the airtime. It's even worse when you consider that virtually all of the excellent commercials this year seemed to be low brow humor. I like low brow humor, but it's distressing to note that companies apparently feel that is the only thing left that works. |

Along those lines, there's still time to vote in the Superbowl Ad poll :)
(I guess there's always time to vote, but this will fade away pretty quickly).
Right now, with only 20 votes, we're looking like a pretty low-brow group - the farting horse has the lead.
I was hoping MDX.org would perhaps go for the more subtle humor - (I loved the one about young Jimi Hendrix choosing to play the accordion instead of the guitar), looks like we just mirror the general public.
But, then again, our society seems to be striving for the lowest-common-denominator - the media just helps us along.
It's interesting that the JJ flap (get it, flap?) and a look at the content of these 'high end' commercials has generated some discussions on what a crass culture we've become, so maybe something good will come of it.

Americans crack me up. Europeans have topless beaches and topless newscasts, while Americans go into a tizzy over one semi-exposed nipple. This is the same nation of adoloscents that harasses women for nursing in public and worships the DD cup. If you want to rule the world, isn't time you grew up?

Exactly! All this scrambling about has to do with contracts and MONEY! It has little or nothing to do with protecting the american public from exploitation.
It becomes a point of litigation, and from there totally loses any credible perspective for us common folk.
Why would you think a country still overrun with drug problems and white collar crime would care about the sensibilities of the public? |

I guess I shouldn't generalize. But it is quite entertaining to see how the media just can't seem to let this stuff go. It's only an issue because the media have decided it is. The mere fact that I'm still discussing it is even more proof. How ironic is that? |
