| Has anyone change thier belts yet. I changed the main belt but as it looks changing the power steering belt is a bit more complex. From it's appreance you need to remove the right motor mount to do this. Does anyone else see this or am I wrong. |

| Hmmm -- interesting question. It looks that way to me, too. The Service Manual discusses adjusting the belt, but not replacing it. |

Hi frostyra. Wondering if you could give me a little help. I just had the power steering pump pulley break off the pump shaft after having had the timing belt tensioner recall performed (see thread under TSBs). My theory is the dealer over-tightened the PS belt.
Since it appears you have access to the Service Manual ('02 MDX), can you give me an excerpt from it on how to adjust this belt to see if there's any way they can over-tighten it? Also, does it have any precautions regarding over-tightening?
Our MDX is currently in the shop having a new pulley installed as I type. |

Yes--it can be overtightened---see warning in reading of the TSB:
http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/atta...=&postid=177507
In the service manual they give instructions on how to set the tightness with a guage or with the proper pressure against the belt. In addition, they are to let it run for awhile, and then adjust the belt again if needed. I assume they did not do a proper job in adjusting the belt. |

The TSB is VERY SPECIFIC!! Thanks to TheWorm and Tim, the TSB has been posted. The following is a quote from Step 10 of the "Repair Procedure" (reference Page 3):
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: Overtightening the power steering belt will cause the power steering pulley to fail, so make sure to set the belt tension to the used belt specification. Refer to section 17 of the appropriate service manual.

I guess that Acura could have put this in ALL UPPER CASE BOLD or could have put this in color or could have put this in ALL UPPER CASE BOLD and in RED or ...
That presupposes that mechanics will read ... hmmmm |

Thanks all. Discussed this with dealer when I picked up the car this AM and he assures me it's now done right. He also assures me he's discussed this with the tech who did the initial recall work. Claims I'm the only one they've seen out of "hundreds" of recalls they've done that had this problem. Would they tell me otherwise? Doubt it.
Discussed the concern about future failure of the pump itself with Acura Client Services. They say that if the pumps fails after the warranty period and they can trace the failure back to this incident, then they're "not going to walk away from it". Should be an interesting discussion when and if it happens.
So for now, after two days of disruption, we have our X back and life is back to normal - except for the letter to be written to Acura recounting this whole incident and how - if the service tech had followed instructions - none of this would have happened. |
