Hi JeffK (and anyone else that has an opinion) -

I've seen your posts about scheduled maintenance and am taking it to heart as I bring my X in for the 7,500 mi maintenance. I called to make the appointment today and everything went fine (only oil/filter change and tire rotation) - until the service guy started telling me that the VTM4 change was recommended. I told him that wasn't true for the 2003 MDX (first scheduled change is at 15K) and he proceeded to give me the "we're in an area that falls under the severe maintenance schedule due to cold temps, stop-and-go driving...." song-and-dance. I don't buy that story as our climate here in the northern burbs of Chicago isn't that much harsher than a good portion of the rest of the northern US. He did finish with "Of course, it's up to you, just let us know when you drop it off."

Normally, I would have told him where to go with his VTM4 change but, while I only have about 8K miles on the X, I've had it for over a year (13 months to be exact).

So, the question is, would you suggest letting them do the VTM4 change now or wait until I actually reach 15K (which could be at the 2 year mark)? When I asked what the VTM4 change would cost, he said it would be "about" $52.00 (probably labor only?). Another way to ask the question is, what's more important when it comes to that first VTM4 change... miles or time?

Change the VTM4 fluid at 7,500 miles for first fluid change then 15,000 miles afterward regardless what the book says, that way your X will last longer.
