Lucasfilm and Twentieth Century Fox today announced that they would release the anticipated Star Wars trilogy on DVD September 21 in the US and Canada. The movies will be sold exclusively as a four-disc collection. Lucasfilm has not yet set an official price for the compilation.
The set includes Star Wars Episode IV: A new Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, as well as a bonus disc complete with a wide range of special features and extras, including what Lucasfilm describes as "the most comprehensive feature-length documentary ever produced about the Star Wars saga." In addition, the disc will boast new-before-previewed footage from the three classic sci-fi films.
All three movies have been digitally restored and re-mastered by THX and will sport Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX functionality for capable receivers. All three films will likewise feature English, French and Spanish subtitles.
"We know how long fans have waited for this release and how much they have been looking forward to it, so everyone has been working overtime to make sure that the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD is an awesome experience," said Jim Ward, vice president of marketing and distribution for Lucasfilm and the DVD collection's executive producer.
Which Editions?
Unclear. However, Bill Hunt of The Digital Bits reports that these will be the 1997 Special Editions, which are were harshly maligned by fans for the changes that were made.
Ward, according to an article in the New York Post, says in reference to the special editions: "We realize there's a lot of debate out there," says Ward. "But this is not a democracy. We love our fans, but this is about art and filmmaking. [George] has decided that the sole version he wants available is this one.
"First and foremost, the DVDs will deliver the very best possible sound and picture and take advantage of everything the medium can offer. On top of that, we are creating added-value material that gets inside the creation of the Star Wars films in a fresh and fun way," Ward added. "We want watching this DVD collection to be as memorable as seeing the movies for the first time."

Not the originals on DVD. Albeit, the "enhanced" versions.
I still love it. |

I think time and time again he said the revised ones, were the ones he meant for the Orig 3 to been made. Thus he is ignoring the fact many didnt like the new"orig". I liked some parts others parts were just dumb. Like the Jabba scene in IV a new hope. That was totally unneeded. Time to fish out the LD and record them to DVD. Oh well. |

Well my 4 year old that has probably only seen one Star Wars movie saw one playing on a Costco demo TV yesterday and was very excited. There is probably an entire generation that has no idea what a ewok is (Not that they are worse of for it...)
There should be an original unretouched (just re-mastered) DVD for episode IV for posterity. I too have the LaserDisk but haven't played it in a while. Perhaps I can see if it still works and dump to DVD? |

| I don't care what version it is. Been waiting a long time for Star Wars to be on DVD. Just think of the sound. My neighbor is going to hate me. |

| Thats what he is hoping people not caring what comes out and to plop down your hard earned cash. But it is your cash. it just irks me that he still play its mine and I'll do what I want, no matter who put me up on top. But like people have the option to buy it, I have the option not to buy the 5 or is it the 6 release of the orig trilogy? Sheesh he is almost as bad as Disney. |

We're talking about a couple of additional scenes, aren't we? If it bothers you that much, just walk out of the room when those parts of the movie are on the screen.
