Well guys I am saddened to say that our 02's tranny is starting to go down hill. Over the last 2 to 3 weeks we have experienced the shuddering and jerking in the tranny consistent with the others descriptions here (only 16k miles!!). I am afraid I will have to jump through all the hoops and fight the dealer tooth and nail before getting satisfaction. That being said I have a couple of questions.

#1 - For those of you who have had your tranny replaced how many miles do you have on the new one and how is it working now?

#2 - How willing/receptive is Acura now days about negotiating a trade on a newer model? Any real incentives or do I need to push the Lemon Law?

#3 - Has anyones transmission TOTALLY failed? Or is this a cop out for them to get a "quick" fix instead of legitimately diagnosing and repairing the problem?

#4 - Any suggestions?

I really dont want to have to fight this with Acura. I was planning a test drive on a BMW this weekend and may just opt to dump the X before any major problems occur.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks
DaleB
Sometimes I wonder if Acura does not jump the gun too quickly on replacing the tranny when there is the slightest hint of a problem. I know from other cars I've owned, one really, that similar symptoms can have other causes.
However, if it appears the symptoms always disappear with a tranny replacement then that says something positive. While the transmission appears to be a potential problem, other systems on the MDX are about as reliable as you could expect from a modern automobile

Which bimmer were you considering? X5? I don't think you will gain much in reliability there.

From what I've been reading on the forum, repeated bad transmissions does not seem to be the norm. And they do have a warranty.

In summary, it is only ONE thing that is really a problem, even if it is a big thing. Hopefully, a redesign for greater reliability is in the works.

Yes I was considering the X5. I also came real close to purchasing the Lexus 300 (now 330) when we bought the X. The X5 was really our 2nd choice with Lexus a close 3rd. I guess what I am really impressed by with the BMW and the Lexus is that their service departments treat you EXTREMELY well. I have already had a couple of run ins with both Acura service departments in Jacksonville. Although the issues were minor it is enough to make me hesitate about dealing with this issue.

I can foresee it going like this.. ME - "We are having these problems".. Acura- oh we need to change your vtm fluid, tranny fluid, soleniod etc... ME "ok"... 3 days later same problem... Take it back.. ME "i am still having this problem"... Acura "oh ok it must be this"... 5 days later same problems.. back to the dealer.. ME "same problem".. Acura "oh it must be this then"... 4 days later same issue.. call customer care argue with them.. call dealer argue with them... finally get them to agree to replace tranny.. 2 weeks or so without X to get re manufactured tranny which may or may not ultimately survive.

I am really opposed to them completely ripping the transmission out. I am not real enthused about having to take the vehicle to them on what I am sure will be multiple occasions for them to "try" to fix it. I know I will need to do this to resolve the problem. I was hoping that with the number of these types of issues they are having they might have come up with some other solution. I am not sure of the long term effectiveness of the re manufactured transmission either. We were hoping to keep the X possibly long term because we love it but I am not one to roll the dice and hope for the best with this type of MAJOR replacement.

It would appear to more of a 'packaging redesign' than a major functional redesign. Which tells me it does the same thing but within a smaller space. Which is no simple feat. Maybe we should be amazed it does not seem to be LESS reliable than the older design, especially considering it even has a less fluid capacity.

We had earlier posts on this subject where some dealers would replace parts like solenoids, that sometimes worked, sometimes not.
As long as I have a warranty I would just as soon they replace it without getting into all this concern about what it is replaced with. NEW transmissions only go into NEW vehciles. No reason to believe the replacement has to be WORSE than a new one, it probably has an even chance to be better.
