How many members are Dish Network subscribers? For the subscribers what receivers do you have? I have used Dish for about 3 years now and am happy with them. What has been your experience with Dish? I have the following receivers, 921 HD/DVR, 721 DVR, 522 DVR, and 510 DVR.

Have been a Dish subscriber for 2 1/2 years. I have the PVR501 recorder. Been very happy as the system has never been down, and Dish seems competitive in their pricing.

Going on 5 years now. In 3 different locations. Excellent service and trouble-free performance.

With DishNW you don't have to buy any hardware, right? They loan you the equipment and install it all free when you sign a contract for at least a yr for the $30/month prog pkg? A co-worker called them by mistake for service problems with their DirectTV and they came over and installed a 3 room DishNW system with PVR receivers!

We've got the 301s. Service has been reliable, except for the typical heavy rain disruptions. Still, we're much happier than when we had cable.

Zafer,
Yes, Dish has a lease program called Dish Home and you don’t have to buy the equipment. The 522 DVR I have is supposed to be only available to Home customers but I bought one on e-bay.

Dish Network is currently in dispute with Viacom. So many major markets will not be receiving the Viacom Channels about 10 channels(BET, Nik, CBS, etc). Check the some website run by CBS, they are actively encouraging their readers to switch from Dish to Direct TV or Cable because of the dispute.

Years ago, and even today on a small scale, cable companies might sic local law enforcement on non-paying subscribers. With threats of big fines and some jail time.

If you think cable operators are concerned about theft, satellite companies will come down with a vengance.

There was a bust a few years ago in Bermuda where illegal chips for satellite receivers were being sold.
No satellite reps or local law enforcement involved. Just the feds.

If you can break in, all the more power to you. And if you do, I would be looking over my shoulder all the time. A doctored 'card' will not match with an algorithm in the receiver. It could permanently disable the receiver. I am not saying that's what will happen, but it is one way they can deter theft.

Presently, there is a big problem in Canada and the government is going after illegal satellite subscribers full force.

Dish has always been better stopping hackers than DirectTV but they are getting even better. The new Dish receivers don’t even have a smart card it’s built into the receiver.
Now if Charley can just settle with Viacom and get my channels back I will be a happy camper

I saw the 'screen messages' from Dish while looking at a boob tube in sunny San Diego this past weekend. I thought it might be just in that area, where Cox Cable seems to have a monopoly on everything.
Have to look into this more. Does not sound good.
Mr. Mom
I switched from DirectV to Dish because direct kept going down during the baseball playoffs. That was 4 years ago and the 6000 model had just come out and so I went with Dish because they had one more HD station. I payed a premium for a new HDTV and there wasn't much programing out there, four years ago. Anyway, I've been disappointed with the lack of HD channels on Dish, but it's finally getting better. I live in the boondocks so it's the only way for me to go. The NBA on HD is awesome!!

I use the same system, have had it for about 3 years. I'm currently using it in my MH (homeless). Because it has a hard drive I have to unplug the receiver when I'm on the road to prevent damage.

We're irritated around my house! We're not receiving Nick, NickW, VH1, MTV, MTV2, nor ComedyCentral channels. I'm missing SpongeBob and the silly old movies on ComedyCentral.

The Dish message mentions this dispute is over them not wanting to pay more for these channels, thus increasing our monthly charges, too. Kinda like saying they are protesting for us!

There may be something to that story. Directv has just increased its monthly fee.

Sounds like I switched to cable just in time.

I was pretty happy with my DISH for 2+ years. But, the price finally got to me. I was paying an extra $20+ a month for extra receivers, sports channel package (I only watched 1 channel) and locals. Plus, I had to jump up to the Americas top 150 just for BET and the Golf channel.

The cable picture is not as clear as satellite, but I get the major networks in HD now and I can use my P-I-P once again. Although I'm missing my DVR right now, but my cable company said they would be rolling out their own in a couple of months. I'm debating whether to go get a Tivo or just wait it out.

Ditto here - we are missing all the above channels plus CBS - which is the channel we watch the most of those cut off!! I switched from cable over 1.5 yrs ago due to unreliable service & am now really hooked on the PVR - but I am going to switch back to cable if they don't resolve this in the next couple days. Comcast has an HDTV box & said PVRs would be available in the next month or 2.

texrb:
I can't believe you aren't receiving CBS! I'd have to do something about that immediately, since we watch that channel the most, too. I've noticed a ton of junk mail from Comcast over the last couple of months, maybe I should quit throwing it out and slow down and check it out.

gdot:
FWIW, I've heard a new Tivo is just around the corner. You may want to just wait and see what happens.

catzx6,

There are over 12 major cities not receiving CBS where Viacom owns the networks (they own 16 CBS stations) - Dallas/Ft worth is one of them. See the links:

http://www.thestreet.com/tech/georg...s/10147884.html

http://www.fool.com/News/Take/2004/take040309.htm

The unfortunate part for us is that DirectTV is serviced in my zipcode by Pegasus - a franchisee - who's prices & service leave a lot to be desired.........this is why I chose DISH when I dumped cable. Cable's rates have increased (for the same programming) over $20/mo since 8/02 when I switched to DISH. In Dallas, Comcast makes you rent a cable box to get all the channels (at $5.95 per TV) - so it adds up very quickly.

If DISH & Viacom don't settle this by tonight, I'm going to get an antenna at Radio Shack & put it in my attic & get CBS that way. Right now we are using a 9" TV with it's small antenna to watch CBS- but reception is pretty bad.

Same here. But no kids around the house so impact minimal. But take away my Sci Fi and you will hear some screaming!

Like Gdot I had DISH for a few years, mainly to pick up TV Japan for my wife, but I still had expanded basic cable with Cox because I had cable internet and DISH did not provide local channels. I dropped DISH totally and switched to Cox when they went digital and began carrying TV Japan. Cox also has many more HDTV channels than DISH and overall it is cheaper for me to go cable. Also I didn't like the fact that DISH didn't bill me for PAY-TV movies until up to 6 months after we'd ordered. We never knew where we stood on our bills. I find it unbelievable that DISH would drop CBS without negotiating, that's a disservice to their customers. Cox was in a dogfight with ESPN for months over price increases, but we didn't lose the station and negotiations continued until the issues were resolved.

I pay $85 a month to Cox for digital cable, includes two digital boxes, the remotes, HBO, Showtime/TMC/Sundance, and Starz.
DaleB
I get the following channels PLUS ABC, CBS , NBC, and PBS locals for just under $60 a month which includes 2 receivers.

http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/...=10045&sortby=1

Being in the Central Valley, CA...we still have CBS. But FOX is still in negotiations. When it's added it will cost a $1 more.

From reading all the propaganda from both sides I think it comes down more to Dish not wanting Viacom to dictate what is in the different packages than the actual price increase. Viacom is demanding that Dish carry some extra channels as well as putting all Viacom channels in the basic package. This is where the real cost comes into play.

Yes, this is historically what happens. It backfired in the SF Bay Area a few years ago, when channel 4, the NBC affliate at the time, would not allow Dish to sign on without picking up some LA station they also owned.
Less than a year later, Channel 11 in San Jose, negotiated with NBC and became the affliliate of the colorful peacock, and allowed Dish to sign-on.

Naturally, the 'packaged' channels have little interest and/or low ratings, or they would not be trying to shove them down Dish's throat. Or Direct TV, or Cable, etc. It's how they do business.

In our area, Comcast provides digital cable, which is the only kind of cable I'd have, but I'm not crazy about having the boxes. If they can update to digital, why can't they do away with the cumbersome boxes?!

Since my earlier post, I've read about all the major areas that lost CBS. It's still unbelievable to me!

One word - MONEY!! They get $5.95/mo for those boxes, so that's why they don't get rid of them!

Thanks catz - I'll have no problem getting one - I'll also be ready for the HDTV receiver when I get the antenna hooked up! :2:

I am not missing CBS in my area. I know in the past and with regards to FOX which never has negotiated in my area, they normally credit a dollar a month for each missing local channel.
Not sure how they will handle non-network channels. Supposedly I receive about 30 channels more now than when I signed up about 3 years ago for 150, not sure what they even are.

They are crediting $1/mo for the missing Viacom channels & $1 /mo for missing CBS - total credit $2. Certainly not worth the BS, but I'm glad they resolved the issue.

Yes but you are better off getting your own TV and just getting the H/D receiver from Dish. The TV sets that Dish is putting in these packages are mediocre quality.

DVR's ae one of the best inventions, for consumers, in recent years. Once you have a DVR you won't ever want to be without one.
