He suggested the US 2436 model est. weight: 675 lbs. ! Can you go to thier web site and check that model out and give me your opinion ? I live in California, from Louisiana/Texas. I want the best, but not the largest. Your comments are valued ! Also if you can tell me what is best to burn ? Logs, chunks, which brand and where to get them etc....
Thanks so much !

Combo meaning, grill and smoker combo ? All I want is primarily a smoker large enough for two 18 lbs turkeys or one turkey and able to do other meats also. The small one I have now can barely accomodate a turkey ! It's my rookie unit. Any tips would be Southern appreciation !~

Pitts & Spitts is the best in my opinion and the 24 x 36 should be large enough for your purposes. I burn wood chunks; the pitt is so energy efficient that once heated up to the proper temps (~ 200) it only takes 3-4 chunks of wood every 30-45 minutes (~3"x5") to maintain the temp. Logs are fine and will allow more time between additions, but I find temp control easier with smaller pieces. I use Hickory, Pecan, and/or Mesquite which I can buy in chunks at Academy (a local sporting goods store).

Yes combo meaning grilling and smoking. My unit is the CS 2436. The quality of construction is identical between the two; the differences are obvious in the photos - firebox location and upright chamber. If you do not need the Upright chamber part then the Combo unit offers a much smaller footprint for the same (24x36) barrel size. The offset firebox of the US funnels heat from one end only, thus the side closer to it will be hotter than the distant side (which has its advantages - user preference). The CS units funnels heat from both ends thus maintaining an even temp throughout the barrel (e.g. may be better for 2 turkeys).

If the Upright chamber (for very low temps; warming, etc) is not that important to you I'd go with the Combo; saves money and patio space even if you never use the grilling part (but the 24x36 grill option is sweet.)

The Combo unit is designed for both grilling, direct heat (charcoal or real wood), and slow smoking, indirect heat. The Upright units are for indirect heat cooking only.

I will be placing my order next week ! Can't wait to get it in March.
Thanks for all your advise !

Not yet. It is suppose to be tomorrow (04-06). I got 3 different stories from all involved from the manufacture, wrapper and shipper ! What a pain in the A$$. I told all of them that I insist that the truck driver wait until I unwrap it to make sure this $2000.00 piece of art is not damaged.
I can't wait. It would be great to have it for the Easter weekend. I'll be in touch for some of your bbq tips !

Thanks for checking in ! I'll take pictures as soon as I get it situated in my back yard. I still don't have a clue how big this pit will be, as the pictures on their web site suck. So I am still wondering where around my pool/deck it will go.....

Happy smokin'.........

It arrived at 12:30 yesterday ! What a work of art ! WOW is all I can say. I'll die before this thing is even near it's end. BUILT for life. TOP QUALITY-TOP Welding "Robotic" my inlaw says. He is a weld inspector. He gave it an A+. He was very impressed, however very hard to please. It's a MONSTER too !
I sprayed it with Pam inside. Got bacon ends distributed out in each area. Cranked her up ! Took quite a bit of fuel (lump coal) to get this monster up to 375 for curring. So we accomplished that by now it was 5:00 p.m. and beer time....well you know the rest of the story, we got steaks and Andoulille sausage out and grilled them on the "grill accessory" I had them add while building it. Awesome results ! I think's going to be a smokey Easter weekend !

I'll take some pictures tomorrow and try to post them.......All in all, very much worth the wait. Glad I got it ! :2: :2:   :D ;)

Great thread with great info. Thanks ! My neighbor is a retired police officer. HE doesn't miss a thing in the neighborhood....a good thing I guess. Anyway he saw the big truck unloading the "long" awaited product. He knew about it too. Should have seen his face when he came over after I had it "up and running".........:D

He asked his wife if he could get one.....she replied....NO too expensive ! They brag about how cheap they are, we all laugh, but this item he was drooling for BADLY.........:2: :2: :2: :2:

I got some butt rub's from BBQ Galore and the internet. I'm off to Costco to get some beef ribs/pork ribs for marinatin n dat luv juiss tonight ya sha.........you might smell it in texas.......

Happy Easter !

Well?
Fabvsix
Well it arrived with some minor damage due to the shippers. The owner of the Pitts and Spitts fired the long time shipping company whn he heard of my complaints etc..... Apparently they have had too many problems. So I got it in the back yard, cranked her up Friday at 1:00 p.m. Smoked a large piece of prime boneless rib. Night before I belly rubbed that sucker with some great stuff from Austin Texas called :
The Salt Lick dry rub at www.saltlickbbq.com. It's outrageous. Has a black pepper smell. By 6:30 p.m. it was ready. Melted in your mouth, tender and juicy. Keep in mind, not only was there minor damage, they forgot to put a "starter kit", pit cover etc....so I'm kind of shooting from the hip till it arrives tomorrow. This unit is BIG, MIGHTY, uses lots of coals and wood chunks to run it. Kinda like a V12 engine, burns lots of gas......So it's really ideal for large parties, as oppose to grilling a "few" steaks.......All in all, I'm happy with my purchase. I need more time to learn the characteristic's of this monster ! They revamped their horrible web site. So there are now better pictures to view of their products at www.pittsandspitts.com

I have found the unit to be fairly energy efficient. I get the fire started using charcoal but cook entirely with wood chunks (4"-6" chunks; NOT logs). To smoke about 4-6 hours takes about 3 cu ft or so. I use Pecan, Hickory, and Mesquite (Louisiana, Tennessee, and Texas :1: ). I tend to keep the meat small; I'd rather smoke several small briskets as opposed to a large one for example

Pitts and Spitts Natural Gas Grill ! Model number GG1830 at www.pittsandspitts.com. I decided that my current grill was time for resting/retiring......Yesterday I did baby back ribs and smoked cabbage heads.....yum yum.....The BBQ sauce was from the internet called HEAD COUNTRY at www.headcountry.com Superb products for dry rub and love juice.....
1st week of June is target ship date. That is the only draw back with custom built pits ! ;)

Happy Smoken ! :1: :1:

It's grilling time and I'm looking for a good quality smoker grill. Is there such a thing as a natural gas grill with side smoker??? Just wondering what you guys (or gals :2: ) got or recommend. I prefer to NOT buy it online from a website.

Pics are of course well received

Do these Pitts grills have rotisseries? For turkeys and some other meats I like mine turning. Helps keep the moisture inside where it belongs.

P&S uses the BEST materials money can buy ! You can order one with "GOLD PLATED" hood cover or Platinum plated cover. They range from anywhere of $1800.00 to $100,000.00 per unit. Sorry Klose doesn't come close, nor do they mention them as "the best" in the popular cook books nationwide (Smoke & Spice).....They also ship Internationally, big customers in Germany. Get your facts before you shout ! Klose is a knockoff as we say in this country.......:1: :1: :1: :1: :1: Besides they are TOO big and look ridiculous ! :1: :1: :1: :1:

Each its own I guess.......

Alrighty...here we go!

I have been Qing for over 10 years...have been in competitions and, while P&S are "good" pits, championship BBQ teams use several "high end" BBQ pits with Klose being ranking at or near the top.

Don't dis' Dave (Klose) and his pits!!! :) Do your research before saying Klose pits "don't come close." They are ranked one of the best pits made.

Several good Inet BBQ sources...

Fabvsix - what do you know about bbq? you live in SF, CA! :) j/k

BTW - what difference does a "gold plated hood cover" make in the quality of awesome Q? While "Smoke and Spice" is an awesome book (I have it as well), it is by no means the authoritative source for Qing and pits :)

In all fairness, I have a Klose pit and a Weber "bullet" smoker....some of the best equipment for making Q' BUT....and I'm speaking from experience on this...great Q' (70-80%) comes from the cook and ingredients used! My $180 weber bullet cooks almost as well as my $1700 Klose pit! I just smoke in my bullet for smaller quantities of meat.

Good luck!!! :)

I happen to live 53 miles East of San Francisco ! Again get your facts straight. My parents own a very successful rest. in Louisiana for the past 18 years. I happen to be a cajun raised in cajun country ! Again get your facts together. I didn't trash Dave's pits, I was stating that P&S makes some fine bbq machines ! They are both good.
Enjoy ! :1: :1:

Moot point, but I will quote you...

One statement - "Sorry Klose doesn't come close, nor do they mention them as "the best" in the popular cook books nationwide (Smoke & Spice)...Get your facts before you shout ! Klose is a knockoff as we say in this country......."

Next statement - "I was stating that P&S makes some fine bbq machines ! They are both good."

Here's an interesting site - http://bbq.about.com/od/smokers/tp/aatp092904a.htm

G. COLTON - do YOUR research!! Not just from books, but from other fellow Q'ers! :)

Any case, what's cookin for this weekend??? I'm gonna make the fajitas recipe from Alton Brown (the one where he actually puts the meat on the hot coals! NO GRATE!!)...should be fun and interestingly good!!! :)

I am not in this "best grill" discussion. All i wanted to know is if the Pitts have a rotisserie.

Pitts does not have that feature because it is part of there fame ! The bottom tank holds liquids which keep the meat moist during slow cooking. You can put anything your mind can think of in there: Wine, Orange juice......as the meat drips juices it returns it to the meat like its revolving.......but no rotisserie that I know of unless you have them custom make it which I'm sure they could do.......

I live in Houston and have visited both the Klose factory and the Pitts and Pitts factory (both are located in Houston). BOTH are fine and of the BEST quality. Both are "cadillac" pitts! :1: You can't go wrong with either one.

I chose Pitts and Spitts because their unique Combo Grill met my needs. http://www.pittsandspitts.com/produ...il.asp?item=299
