Hi All,
My X has developed some problems in the past few weeks...40 mph bucking, Check Engine/VTM-4 lights.
I have 60K miles and am out of warranty...I read in other posts that dealers are cleaning intakes and replacing bad EGR Valves to remedy these symptoms.
I will be testing the MDX with a buddy's OBDII code reader to see if the EGR code comes up faulty.
I don't have a service manual, but plan on getting one. Is there anyone out there who has a Service Manual that would be willing to check if it has the following:
1) Instructions for the replacement or installation of the EGR Valve
2) Any info on the intakes (I'm clueless about this one)
3) Info on the malfunction codes
I'd really appreciate it. It's very strange, the diagnoses and mixed results on this board for this problem. Some have had success with replacing the EGR valve, some have not. Some have had the same symptoms and had the transmission replaced!!
Now, how in the world can the same symptoms be remedied by replacing such different systems?? |

| Any updates? I'm starting to get the same problem. I don't have a check engine light, but I'm noticing a very subtle flutter. I took it in this morning, but couldn't replicate the problem. Los Gatos Acura wants to charge me $170 just to check it out. That's ridiculous. Were you able to resolve your problem with the egr valve replacement? |

actually i left it alone and it went away....oddest thing.
i have not been driving her that much lately, as i am on project and out of town most (all) of the time.
in any case, im bringing it in pursuant to the TRANNY RECALL for the 01 model year. hopefully theyll find something wrong and give me a new tranny....which is what they indicated |

| I just took my MDX in this morning. I've been noticing a slight fluttering when I push on the gas. I have a 2002 MDX and my warranty just expired too. The shop wanted to charge me $170 just for diagnostics and hooking it up to the computer, crazy. I don't have the lights turning on yet, so I decided that I'll wait till I see something turn on. Regardless, i would think that with so many people reporting bad egr valves, that Acura would put a recall on that too. I've been a bit dissapointed with Acura lately. In fact, I doubt I'll ever buy an Acura again. |

| I had my 2002 in for its 30,000 mile service, I was explaining to the service tech. that my mdx had started doing something strange and that it seemed to be bucking between 35-40 MPH. He seemed to know what i was talking about and said they would take a look at it. They called towards the end of the day and told me they had to replace the EGR valve and it would not be in till the following day. Upon picking up the car the following day, the bucking was gone, and the transmission seemed smother than it had been in a long time. Now a month later !@@##$$% the bucking is back. It will be going in this week again, ill post the outcome of this visit. |

The EGR replacement procedure in the Service manual seems pretty straightforward. (remove intake manifold cover and ignition coil cover, disconnect EGR valve, undo 2 nuts to remove valve) If you want a copy, send me an e-mail and I'll scan and send one to you. |

| I just had the EGR valve replaced and the car seems to be running smoothly. Thankfully, my dealership replaced it for free even though it was outside my warranty. I can't believe Acura hasn't called a recall on this part. This is ridiculous. EVERYONE is having this problem. This is the one complaint I have with Acura... why is it that their warranties are so short if they have such faith in their cars? Good luck, I hope things work out for you. |

| Remember, the EGR valve is part of the emissions control system, and emissions items are covered under a longer warranty -- by law. |

| Once again, a problem with Acura. If it's covered, why don't they own up to it? Are they trying to scam me, and others? I can't imagine that they honestly don't know that... Intersting though, I am glad you replied. Thank you. |

frostyra,
Good call - the EGR is part of the emissions system and covered under a different warranty period, a lot longer. I think the service departments are so in to the mindset of 48 months/50K miles, (warranty) that they forget there are other parts that are covered longer (best case and giving them the benefit of the doubt). Worse case they are being lazy and charging the customer vice doing the paper work to get reimbursement from Acura/AHM. Anyway the EGR valve should be replaced at no charge under the emissions warranty. |

Mine has the same symptoms, but I have not had the time to get it to the dealer yet (1 1/4 hours away). I know the emissions warranties vary from state to state, but the emissions warranty booklette I have only has the EGR valve and related parts covered for 4 years or 50,000 miles. I, of course, now have 52,000 miles on mine.
BTW, I bought an OBD II scanner (even though no dash lights have appeared yet)....no codes have been set. I followed the service manual procedure for testing the EGR valve with the scanner connected (operating temp engine, drive 62mph for 10 seconds, then close throttle for 5 seconds) and still had no codes..... |

The closest dealer is about an hour and 15 minutes away, so I procrastinated on taking it....I tried to order an EGR valve from Tim, but they were backordered for two to three weeks.
I took it in and the EGR valve was replaced under warranty (even though I am past 50,000 miles) with no questions asked. They have replaced a lot of them. Unfortunately, I still have the same symptoms, most noticeable around 50 mph or higher, when it is in 5th gear and enough pressure is on the gas pedal to keep a steady speed. I have to try to get it back to the dealer in the next few weeks...I am hoping the manifold is not plugged up, but .....
BTW, my transmission was given a clean bill of health and the oil jet kit was installed. I was very concerned, based on the poor condition of the fluid when I flushed it at 30,000 miles. I think Deltajetfixer's advice of changing 4 qts at every oil change has helped tremendously. |

A question or two if you don't mind. I think after searching the site my X might have this same problem. I have both the engine light on and today the VTM4 light came on. My symptom seems to be a bit different though - when the car is stopped (in park or in gear with the brake on) the RPMs just go up and down as if you are pushing on the accelerator and letting it off again. If I turn the car off and turn it back on again sometimes it stops and sometimes it doesn't. I know...I'm not knowledgeable about cars so be patient with my descriptions. I now live 2 hrs from a dealer and plan to call tomorrow about the problem and the recall (notice just got forwarded to my new address). Is it safe to drive it all the way up there? What will happen if I don't get an appointment right away? With kids at school and husband deployed it's hard to go 2 hrs up and back before the 3:00 bell rings at the school.
Thanks for your patience :) |

It should be all right to drive 2 hrs to the dealer; you'll just be polluting a tad more. Make sure the dealer knows what you're coming for, and let him know your symptoms as well as that the VTM-4 and Check Engine lights are on. Also tell him about your time constraints with the kids. BTW, when I had rough running and those two lights, the dealer told me that it could be either the EGR situation or the Idle Air Control Valve; with your symptoms, it might be that IAC valve instead of the EGR. Good luck! (And thank you for caring for your family while your hubby helps to protect this great nation!) |

As a Veteran (and a past attendee of Ft Polk), my thanks to you and your husband for his service and your support of him and the children.
As a possible suggestion, I checked the dealers from the Acura website. The closest one is Classic Acura in Beaumont, Texas at 73 miles.
I found two others that are farther away, but they have Saturday hours for service, and that might help you more. They are:
Gillman Acura in Houston, Tx, 141 miles but they have Saturday Service from 8am to 5pm.
Champion Acura Gulf Freeway in Houston, Tx, 144 miles and Saturday service hours from 7am to 3pm.
Hope that helps |

Thank you very much! I really only wanted someone to help with the diagnosis/possible ideas for problems because whenever I go to the service departments I always feel like an idiot. Thanks for looking up the dealership stuff because I hadn't even thought about looking for Sat hours!
We bought our MDX when we were stationed here before (3 years ago). Can't imagine how lucky I must be to get here twice LOL. Of course, all that moving has taken it's toll on my beautiful X. It is just over 3 and has 68K miles on it! |

| Thanks for the advice - this is the best site for research! Took the X to Beaumont yesterday for recall and the other problem was the Idle Control Valve. This will cost $330 to fix. I had to get a rental (they didn't have any loaners available) and the valve won't be in until today or tomorrow. They said they might pay "part" of the rental. I hope they do.......2 hrs away from the dealer is bad enough and 3 days of a rental is expensive. |
