If you are an "Old-Timer" how about posting a sentence or two and let us know how it's going with your MDX. Do you still own it? How many miles on the odometer? Have you had to replace the tires and if so at what mileage.
I don't consider myself an "Old-Timer", I'm probably a "Mid-Timer", but really enjoyed some of the input from some of the original members when I first started posting in mid 2002. I suspect there are many of the long time members that log on from time to time but do not post. If that's the case then how is it going old-timer? |

Hi everyone. Good thread topic Mr. Eagle!
My 2002 MDX has 30,000 miles and I still love it. Considering trading it in for a 2004 while the mileage is still relatively low and it has decent trade-in value.
My only complaint is that the vehicle is no longer a rarity- there are hundreds of them around here (Seattle)! |

Good topic, Bald 1. Waaaaaal, I ain't as spry as I used to be, now that I am in my new rest home, my eyesight is failing, and now I pop Advil BEFORE I play tennis in addition to afterwards.....but as for muh X, it is a lively as a spring chicken in a rooster coop.
Only 26,000 miles (I travel by plane a lot) with nary a problem, 'cept for that crack in the windshield from a flying tumbleweed I got near Lubbock.
Now where DID I put my walker........

hi
had my X since oct,2001.
no major problems after 37,000+ mi.
traveled a lot already with it. From Illinois to Miami. Illinois to Virginia.
Florida to California and never failed me.
i'd still say the navigation is still the best accesory on my X. I could not imagine travelling these amount of mileage without the navigation. It paid me lot already with worry-free driving with my wife during all these travels.
i hope i could keep it for another 5-7 years. |

Good thread! Tim & I were just talkin' about old timers the other day!
Been around since 11/29/00 and still goin'...along with the X. Just a hair over 20k on the car (around-town driving, mostly) with no major problems...needs an alignment and balance, tho.
Funny BostonX (from Seattle  ) mentions the # of X's on the road. I see far more X's (and Pilots) on the road around here than RX300/330 and ML's. |

| I guess I qualify, sinced my rank is "traflo". My mahogany is going in for its 33,750 mile oil change this Friday, as well as to try to fix a failed "bun warmer" in the driver's seat. There have been a few problems -- EGR, SRS sensor in the passenger seat, throttle cable bracket "buzz" (fixed it myself) -- but none that weren't taken care of quickly. Goodyears were replaced by Cross-Terrains at 30,700 mi; they weren't to the wear bars yet, but a tad too close for comfort with winter coming up. I'd get another one in a heartbeat, but not before she's at least eight years old -- maybe ten or twelve! |

Picked it up in May 2002, have 24.000 miles. Runs better than ever. Michelins look good for at least another 20,000.
Only warranty item was getting the front disks resurfaced at 18K with new pads.
If the 'charm' does not wear off, maybe pick up another in '06 with the promise of a bigger engine. Zoom, zoom, zoom! |

Hi there,
Had my X since April '01 and had the thud, the brake clunk, the dripping mirrors, the cracked windshield, the misaligned glovebox door, the kazoo, the "popping" driver's seat, nav screen blackout, "check engine"/ VTM light on, defective rear defroster (did I forget anything?). No tranny/engine problems. Changed tires at 56k after I had a flat while doing 80mph. Could've gotten just 2 tires but decided to go for a "package deal" from my dealer: all 4 tires (Michelins) plus balancing for $720. Changed rear pads at 65K. So far we put 70K miles on it and still runs and looks great and we love it. In fact we love it so much we got a second one, an '04 Touring/Nav/RES that has been flawless so far (1300 miles).

.....but have owned my '03 MDX since Dec. '02, like one or two others here. Started lurking on this website around November of 2000 and finally registered and started posting in Feb of 2001!
I now have a little over 23,000 miles on my MDX. I must say that I've enjoyed posting, debating and on occasions voicing my contradictory positions on some discussions!! :) . Other oldtimers will know that my favorite passtime on here is devoted to praising, promoting and telling the world about the greatness of Honda's Navigation System ;) . Besides that, I've found this board very helpful and useful, and most people on here seem to have an open mind to accept differing points of view!! |

Hey! It's been a busy year! Moved to Seattle from Boston last April (hence the mystery of being "BostonX" from Seattle). Drove the 'X across country too, what a ride!

Been busy planning and building a house.

ol' timer checkin in (from oct 2000)
our 01 NBP is still alive and kicking--she's around 48000mi already and running great. had the typical problems: thud, weeping mirrors, door dings, but we still love her. my friend is driving her around town for now, especially since we've got another one sitting in the garage.
actually, that should be a pretty good new topic...how many 2001 owners purchased the mildly restyled 2004 edition? |
|

| wmquan |
We've had our 2001 MDX since October 6, 2000. I was excited about the new MDX and had put a refundable deposit on it in May, 2000.
I've pasted in some of this from a previous post, and added to it.
Negative Side:
- An occasional rattle would come and go. Don't have one currently.
- Had the not-a-recall recall applied (affected the first 2,500 or so) with a problem with the belt/airbag sensor.
- Had the radio faceplate replaced under the TSB, but our buttons never went dead beforehand (fairly frequent problem in the first model year).
- A bit too much jiggle in the seats, another famous problem.
- Have the infamous the shift-gear click/clack/clunk.
- Curiously, the carpet in the footwell wore out very quickly. This was replaced under warranty as a one-time "good will" item though I'm gonna scream if it goes out again. Carpet seems to be low quality and does not wear well.
- Had one, and only one, incident of a very violent tranmission shudder. Came when the vehicle was aimed sharply downhill and stopped at a mailbox, perhaps under some stranger stop/shift conditions. We've got our fingers crossed on the transmission, but have not had an incident since.
- Have the infamous seat pillar door nicks.
- The leather of the driver's seat showed a lot of creases very early and continues to do so. Even with cleaning and conditioning with Lexol. Definitely lower quality leather in the 2000's, probably better with the 2004.
- The spare tire hoist broke because Acura roadside assistance used a power tool to pull it back up (when there's a label that says don't use power tools). Fixed under warranty. Of course, there should be some kind of ratchet in the hoist so it can't be overturned, so this is as much a design issue as it is a roadside assistance issue.
- Have had the windshield replaced twice because of cracking. Dunno if this is an indication of thin 2001 glass or not. The replacements may have actually helped ...
- Tons of wind noise around the windshield (improved in later model years). The replacements seemed to have helped.
- Strangely, have never had the weeping mirrors problem that bedeviled the 2001's. And we live in Seattle where it rains quite a bit!!
- Had the ever-popular EGR valve problem (indicated by Check Engine light coming on, often in conjunction with the VTM-4 problem light). EGR valve replaced.
All in all, the vehicle has done well, especially for a first-year vehicle of a relatively new design and production run (arguably the most complex vehicle mass-produced by Honda when it first came out). However, it's far from perfect and not as bulletproof as some would expect from Honda/Acura. And the relative weakness of the materials quality is not making the vehicle age gracefully.
I've considered trading in for a 2004 but even with buying an extended warranty, I still can't justify it financially. Hard to get good price breaks on MDX's in this area too. I'll probably end up getting an extended warranty and running through October 2007 before I replace it. I am definitely concerned about the transmission, so I want the extended warranty. Eventually Honda will probably extend the transmission warranty to 100k as it has with other vehicles, but who knows when they'll do this.
Okay, here's the PLUS side:
- Still think it's an almost ideal blend of power, handling, and ride. No, it's not a sports sedan, and it does have a bit too much body roll, but it acquits itself well for a 2.25+ ton vehicle. The power's been great for climbing mountain passes and confident passing on one-lane-each-way roads.
- Great utility through its excellent cargo room. Swallows up overloaded Costco shopping carts, sometimes even allowing the closing of the cargo cover!
- Plenty of room for passengers.
I agree that there are now too many in the Seattle area. They're all over the place now. When we bought ours, we enjoyed over a year of relative exclusivity. Even after two years, people would come up to us and tell us how hard it was to get one and how they wanted one.
Will the next-gen MDX be the same kind of home run, or just an evolutionary improvement? We'll see. |

April 2001, 38K miles and no major problems. We had all the fixes previously mentioned done. Still running on the original Goodyear’s. Got a couple rattles but with the roads we have around here that’s normal. We still don’t see any MDX’s on a regular basis so I guess we are still the only one in town. We switched to the local Honda dealer for service starting with the 30K service. Still leery about the 01 transmissions and probably will sell it this time next year before the warranty runs out. The short list for replacement at this point will be a 05 MDX base or an Infiniti G35 AWD sedan. I know that’s apples to oranges but my wife just loves the G35. We were at the Cleveland auto show yesterday and I couldn’t get her away from them.:D

My 2002, purchased Dec, 2001, has a little over 33,000
miles. So far, I have had NO problems. Just regular
service trips to the dealer.
I guess the weakest part I see at this time is the driver's
seat shows more wear, than I would like. I have treated the
leather on a regular basis, but still do not like how the
driver's seat looks.
The Michelin's tread still looks great. I should get at least mid to high 40s out of them.
Zaino has kept the exterior looking new.

May 2001 sign up for me.
My X has been great all in all for its 26,300 miles. Had the standard Thud, mirrors, EGR, and even a failed thingy on the rear blower motor, but considering a first model year run, I think the '01s faired better than the '02s and much better than the vast majority of vehicles out there. Only wish I had my old job back and second son off my payroll so I could go get an '04 or maybe '05.
I don't think the X would have faired as well when I was camping and hauling a bunch of boy scouts around, but that time has passed and my wife would never permitted me to use it if there was an X in our lives back then.
My only disappointment is the loss of uniqueness us original owners felt after waiting months to drive one around. |

| I'm not a "famous name" in that I haven't the total posts that the above named have, but I qualify as an old timer since I bought our MDX in January 2001 and joined this forum soon after. I even have a frayed ACURAMDX.ORG sticker on the back window. We first met (MDX and I) at Santa Monica Acura in Los Angeles and moved to Phoenix in November, 2001. We now have 40,760 miles and running great. NO recalls; no accidents; minor problems like weeping mirrors; original tires; Sam's DVD/TV tuner/ Rear View camera installed; no nav updates (luckily not needed because the areas I've lived in are mapped adequately); still the best looking, best kept NBP in my neighborhood; all three rows of seats used a lot (we have five children). If it sounds like I'm waxing nostalgic about this fine ride, its because I have a 2004 SSM/Quartz Touring w/nav on order which will be here at the end of March and we will turn the '01 in after almost four years of great service. With all the other Acuras in our garage, we have to keep the tradition alive. |

From Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, to Halifax, Vancouver and Whitehorse in the Yukon, with 48,000 miles I have had no significant problems. For me, it's mostly highway driving and it shows because the last time my MDX was checked by the dealer, I still had 70 % of each brake pad remaining, with the tire tread looking only half worn out.
My biggest gripe is Honda's policy regarding the warranty - it's only good in the country where it was purchased. :( |
|
|
| jford62 |
Got mine in October of 2000 and have 49,550 miles on it. I replaced tires at around 40,000, more because I like to keep decent tread on the tires and the fact that I had a big, fat nail in one of the tires. I got take offs through ebay for $75/tire (Cross Terrains) and have had no problems with them.
I got quoted in the original Autoweek review along with my *****es about weeping mirrors and clunky brakes. I moved from Kentucky to Florida and finally had the mirror tsb done a few months ago when I had my only warranty work done so far (outside of the tsb to tighten the sunroof bolt to keep it from rattling): Inside rear view mirror quit dimming and had to have it replaced. Drivers seat belt receptacle was also replaced because the side air bag light kept coming on. I had it back to the dealer last week because the light kept coming back on again, but it, of course, was not on when I got to the dealer, it did not set a code in the computer, and it has not come back on since. Because it was going out of warranty, they searched to make sure all tsb's had been done and they ordered a radio faceplate...I had never had any problem, but I will take a replacement.
I have done all my fluid changes and minor maintenance myself....I am very concerned about the transmission (based on nasty looking fluid), but I am not going to pop almost $2000 for an extended warranty. I keep buying Acura's because I rarely, if ever, have to have any repairs done to them. |

I've been a lurker since December 2000 when I decided to purchase the MDX. After a long 9 months wait I finally got our MDX at the end of September 2001, and promptly registered and became the official acuramdx.org member a few days later in October. This site has proven to be an invaluable resource.
I am very happy with our MDX. The only minor problem that I have experienced todate is the failed EGR valve (couple months ago) that was replaced under warranty. So far our MDX has 23,000 miles. We plan on keeping it for 8-10 years or approximately 100k miles, whichever comes first.

2001 Touring with Navigation since 3/15/2001. The first problem was they had to replace the Module Control Unit. The X would beep at me at weird times.
Now it's got 41K miles and looks like I've got another 10K on the original tires. Has anybody lasted that long with your Michelin Cross-Terrains? I've taken two trips from California to Colorado and back. I love the navigation except for in Salt Lake City prior to the Olympics. They had done so much road work around the city I had a hard time finding an Acura Dealer to change the VTM-4 fluid at the first 7500 miles. Plus I had the mirror TSB done and they messed up the seals inside my door panels. Now I've got a water intrusion problem. I am disappointed with the lack of "every fall" navigation updates as advertised. Finally got one, but only because they had to replace the DVD player because of DVD Read Errors. Working flawlessly now.
We are planning a trip to Idaho this April for spring break. But if the weather is nice we will probably take the 2004 350Z Roadster instead. From my experience with Acura's OEM navigation I bought the Roadster without navigation. Going to install an aftermarket navigation.
All that aside, I still love the X. I hope to keep for some time. It's still running strong. |

I guess I am an old-timer. Great to see all of the responses. I have been a bit low-key lately but still check the site most days and post something once in a while.
I still remember taking delivery on the afternoon of Sept 10, 2001. The world was full of joy as a cruised home in the MDX, only to discover that next fateful morning that the world had changed forever. I remember feeling guilty at the time with a shiny, new car in the driveway and tragedy to so many others.
Anyway, back to the questions. 2001 MDX and just hitting 20,000 miles (guess I need to get out more but hey, my commute is 2 miles). No real problems at all other than a door ding right on my fender :( The MDX has been very good to me and I have never regretted it for one day. |

Hi ALL!!
I started looking for MDX info on the Web in May 2000. I bought the first MDX(Base NAVI: SN 379) sold by my local dealer on Oct 7, 2000. I took a trip to the NC mountains when the car was a week old. The NAVI worked great. You can see three pictures(Silver NAVI in the Smoky Mountains) in the "Gallery" submission on 11/17/00. I put 37,000 miles on it and had no problems. Had one recall for a passenger seat belt wiring harness.
Got a 2004 MDX last Oct and it was the first one my dealer sold for 2004. I got the emissions recall. My only recurring problem is that the voice activated NAV only works half the time and the radio changes stations or goes to the CD on its own about 4 times a week.
I remember the early days of this group when people were explaining how to install the add-on accessories. Go to the "Gallery" and see that on 2/14/01, I submitted: MDX Accessory Cap Installation with pictures. Everyone could still use this tip.
My 2004 Touring with NAVI is so much better than my 2001 MDX. The quietness and the sound of the radio made it worth the trade. The other big improvements are the NAVI Maps, Back Up Camera, auto headlights and auto windshield wipers. The tire pressure gauges would have come in handy on my 2001. I now have about 6,000 miles on my 2004 MDX. |
|
|
| BostonX |
I am very seriously considering a trade-in. I've driven in an '04 and the quietness is noticeable compared to my '02.
I know this sounds ridiculous but my main concern is color! I love my Granite Green and the current palette just doesn't turn me on. I'm actually leaning towards the new white...... |

Not only have I been around since January 2001 on this site, but I've got 85,700 miles on my baby that we've had since December of 2000!
I've been MIA on this site for about 2 years, but that's only because our MDX has been performing just great until this past month. The tranny is dying! But, just yesterday Acura has agreed (via "Good Will" gesture) to pay for the tranny if I pay for the labor. I agreed. Since I didn't buy the 100k extended warranty, that saves me about $4,200!
Paying $960 for labor to repair my tranny still sucks (particularly since one of the reasons I buy Hondas/Acuras is because of the reliability), but another way I look at it is that I've just saved about $800 over buying an extended warranty/service contract (assuming nothing else major goes wrong in the next 14k miles, knock on plood)!
I don't post much, but I read alot, and I must say, this site has been an invaluable resource of knowledge! It's part of the reason I was able to reason (ie- complain) to the service manager and Acura, that if my MDX has a bad tranny, that I should not have to pay full price.
I can say that way back in 2001, I was one of the major contributors to solving the infamous THUD. Sometimes I feel like I was a guinuea pig for buying one of the earliest models... I should get paid! :P
Note to self: When I bring it in, confirm with service manager that if Acura steps up to the plate and offers an extended warranty on the powertrain for up to 7 years or 100k (eg, TL, CL, Odyssey), that I will get my money back. |

True, it was the hottest selling SUV at that time, but still doesn't fully compensate the following problems:
1) THUD, at least 3 service visits to determine that a lower control arm joint needed tightening
2) Squeaking Right Front Strut, replaced
3) Noisy fuel pump, replaced
4) Noisy/Broken A/C motor fan, replaced
5) Leaking right rear shock, replaced
6) Vibrating brakes, rotors resurfaced twice
7) Overly tight rearview mirror, replaced
8) Loose leather in second row, tightened/more cushion
9) Weeping mirrors, TSB fix
10) Squeaking driver's seat, fixed (mostly)
If it wasn't for all the old timers, including myself, who knows, the MDX might still have some of these problems.
And, here are some other little quirks:
11) Rear wiper with no intermittent function
12) Sloshing fuel tank
13) Clock in the Navi screen
14) Left dead pedal a little too close, can't stretch out left leg
15) Wind and Road noise a little high for a premium vehicle(apparently improved in later years)
16) Third Row Headrest stowing design eliminates half the space of the little storage area because you can't pull the headrests out if it's full of stuff
17) Middle seat in second row way too stiff for third person, good place for baby seat though
18) AC functions in two locations...
oh heck, Acura should hire me as one of the focus group or quality control inspectors...
Bottom line, the MDX is a great vehicle, but like most any other vehicle, it's not perfect. I knew buying a first year model, I would very likely face some possible problems. But, buying a Honda, I expected a little less problems than what I faced. Luckily, most problems were not an inconvenience, I just said fix it during an oil change or during a scheduled maintenance.
Even today, I consider the MDX one of the best overall values on the road and that's why I bought it over 3 years ago, and why I'm thankful that Acura decided to step up, and pay for the tranny, because I couldn't think of another car/SUV/minivan to replace it. Heck, I don't even like the new design of the '04 MDX tailights. |

| I'm not qualified to be an Old Timer on this forum, but where is lugnut? I still think his pics in the Gallery are the best example of what an Acura Brochure should look like. |

I had about 30,000 on the 2002 (got the first one that year - only like 15k/year driven) when I traded it for the 2003 (got the last one for this year). 2003 now has 8,000 miles on it....
Good to see all the old names... |

Hello, glad things are going well.
I PM'd many of the old crew last night maybe they will check in; I hope so. |

That thread and specific post lists members who signed up in the first 6 months AND who had over 100 posts at the time. Well obviously I signed up during the first 6 months, November 14 2000, but I was a quiet reader and not really a poster. Now look what all of you have done to me! :4: |

| Has anyone heard from GatorGreg since he bought the CRV? Next to my terse posts and wmqualm's posts (BTW, wmqualm I also have a '04 Saab 93ss), Gator had the best posts. |

| GatorGreg last posted in June '03. He was on my PM list, but he is not accepting any PM. I believe he still browses the boards and is active in the CRV boards. |

I agree :2:
Thanks for telling me about this thread Tim, nice to see all the old names! In addition to my CR-V and Element site that Tim mentioned above, you can also find me on www.Toyota-4Runner.org (aka www.T4R.org ), I started the 4Runner site on a whim for my buddy Thai who traded in his CR-V for a 4Runner and now it's going pretty strong :p |

Hey everyone,
Guess I could be considered an old timer too. Don't have the high post or the points but I'm here pretty much here every weekday, seeing what's up. The X just went in for it's 30k check up this past Tuesday.
No real problems. Got the weeping mirrors, seat click, and mileage doubling TSB performed over the years.
I've got the window spline in the windshield (actually black vinyl tubing) and Sam's unit to watch video on the Navi. What ever else I need, I buy from Tim.
I learned quite a bit from this site related and not related to the X.
Let the good times continue to roll! |

Old Timer...
I think Ive been a member for almost two years and had the mdx for a year. I do have to say there are a lot of new faces around here and I dont spend nearly the amount of time I used to b/c the baby, or toddler, is growing up so fast, I have very little time on the computer.
I bought my mdx almost a year ago to the day (actually, I think it was a year ago yesterday that we picked it up) and havent had any problems with it. There is a recall out on it but i'll have that fixed next week.
This is a great board with wonderful people offering lots of knowledge. This is a great post. Thanks all. |

The old '01 had a cracked windshield when we traded it, I wonder what they thought when they saw the "DMor fix" I applied ;) |

Been around since mid - 2001, when I was researching the car.
I'm here from time to time, but its been awhile. I'm back because we're taking in the car for the following problems tomorrow (55,000 miles):
(Bought the extended warranty)
- Car is stalling on almost a daily basis now. ITs dangerous, my wife and kids are usuaslly in the car
- Rear A/C Broke, after it had been fixed before
- Check engine light is on intermittenly. . .
- Transmission stutter/problem.
Wish us luck. |

Hello DMor! I was in Rancho Bernardo recently (I think that is around your area). I kept my eyes open for Mesa Beige MDX with sidesteps! Never did see it though. |

The same side steps that at one time were very "unique"?:2: |

Yep...you're in my hood! You wouldn't recognize my rig. I removed the Maniks nearly two years ago, after returning it to Cush for a routine service call and complaining about their hoist damaging my driver's sidestep during the service call. They denied it (of course)...then (several months and several complaints later) new management asked me to return with the damaged sidestep and I just never got around to it. So...I'm sidestepless in San Diego. :) (But they're stacked in my garage!) Then after they washed my car...they literally rubbed off my Acura.Mdx sticker (outside mount)...so I removed the rest of that as well.
Currently, I'm blasting around with a personalized plate, a kinda dusty rig, my stock Rear Tail Gate deflector and custom colored flares. I am kinda LOOKING around at new motorized options though!
BUT...if you spot someone insanely cute in a Gold MDX...it's me. :) |

| Now I'm an oldtimer with a new ride. Just turned in the '01 NBP for an '04 SSM/navi and, in the process, I've changed jobs. Now working for the US Forest Service in Idyllwild, (Riverside County)CA, but still commuting back to Phoenix on weekends until school is out next month. I pulled out Sam's tuner to have it modified to install into the '04 and scraped off what was left of the MDX.Org sticker. We're going to miss the '01 -- it was a great car for us. I'll have to change my signature, I guess. |
