Propane B-B-Q Advice Needed - Click HERE for Original Thread

With spring coming I need to replace my propane grill and was looking for some advice on what to get. I'm leaning towards a Weber Genesis Gold B; http://www.weber.com/bbq/pub/grill/...x?g=3280001&t=g I can get it locally for about $549, thoughts?

I bought the platinum. Nice grill......but went with natural gas. Seems that the natural gas cooks a bit slower and and the heat is not as intense as with propane.

I am an outdoor cooking fanatic and used to post all the time at a couple of forums.

The Weber gold is a pretty good value, it offers a good range of adjustability for slow-roasting and other options. It is fairly well made and with reasonable care can last 7 years or more, plus the parts are available everywhere.

If you want "steak house style" charring the Webers don't put out enough heat, but to get something that does you will either sacrifice the flexibilty/durability of the Weber or end up spending ALOT more money.

DO NOT get a DuKane-- quality control is all over the map, there are grills from MHP that are quite nice. If you shop the warehouse clubs there are grills that can be pretty nice, but as they switch suppliers weekly the quality is a crap shoot & parts -- fuhgedaboutdit!!!

{btw there is a ton of info on the web about the relative merit of pronance vs natural gas -- I'll leave that for days of gogoling...}

Thanks guys, I have to go with propane as natural gas (my preference) is not available in my area. I'm not going to do any serious cooking (I leave that to my wife), just burgers, dogs, steaks, chicken, sausage for family meals and the B-B-Q's in the summer.

Common now, propane or natural gas is for convenience not merit; for merit we're talking pecan, hickory, apple, mesquite, etc  :1:

The stainless models at Sams have performed well for me, and I have never had any difficulty getting parts. I have several friends with them as well, and haven't heard any complaints.

Saw this one at Lowe's the other evening. Its $500. Really nice.

I ended up getting the Weber Genesis® Gold B from Fortunoff on-line. $549 assembled and delivered and no sales tax. Although I told them not to assemble it, I prefer to do that myself. It's coming on 4/1.

Just got the Weber Summit Silver C natural gas grill. I am waiting for the natural gas line to be extended for hook-up, but can't wait to use it. It has a smoker box w/separate burner.

I will update once I have it up and running.

I got this grill a couple years ago and love it!

Sunshine Legend 4000
Four independent cast iron burners give 45,000 BTUs under a 600 square inch cast iron cooking surface that's half grill, half griddle.

The griddle is awesome. I sear my meat on the griddle and finish it on the grill. I like a crisp outside and warm pink inside and this grill delivers!

Although you can change out the cast surface tops for 2 griddle sides, 2 grill sides, wok, etc. No fancy gadgets like rotisserie, infrared burner, etc. But it is one heavy (145lbs) duty grill.

It can use propane or natural gas and is built like a kitchen stove-top and you only have to assemble the trolley. You can easily remove it from the supplied teak trolly for a permanent built in application.

My grill arrived on 4/1. It has steel cooking grates and the instructions say not to clean the grates with a brass bristle brush, only use a steel bristle brush.

I've searched high and low for a steel bristle brush but can't find one. I even checked with a local Weber dealer and he said he has always used a brass bristle brush w/o any problems.

Anyone out there know if using a brass brush on the steel grates will cause a problem.....and where can I find a steel bristle brush?
hammermdx
I actually found a steel bristle one at Home Depot....still wondering why brass bristles shouldn't be used on steel grates?
cbarry
I was told brass bristles are OK by the Weber reps at Ace Hardware. In fact, you can see on Weber's homepage that Weber sells a brass-bristle brush (say THAT 10 times fast!).

This link is from Weber's homepage with cleaning instructions for stainless steel grates. It recommends using a Brass bristled brush. (cast iron grates require different cleaning)

Weber grill clean-up FAQ

P.S. I am loving my Weber Summit Silver C. Have used it several times-- very even grilling, and LOVE the smoker box!

I replaced my 15 year old Weber Genesis grill last year with a Silver Summit. I have always used brass brushes with no adverse effect.
If you take care of it, (ie keep it clean and perform regular maintenance) it will last a long time.
The real advantage of the Summit series over the Genesis, apart from the larger size, is the additional btu output.
Also, I highly recommend the optional rotisserie, I absolutely love it. we use it for roasts, chickens, turkeys and pork roasts. Cant beat it.

Also, the Weber.com website has many recipies and you can sign up for an emailing of the "recipie of the week".

Happy grilling!

We've been using the basic Coleman green with two burners for a few years. I used to be a dedicated charcoal guy, but this thing is excellent. Starts easy, gets extremely hot (I believe it's output is higher than the comparably priced Webers) and it's so simple to use that my wife even fires it up and uses it. It cost about a third less than its competitors and we have never regretted the purchase. Got it at Home Depot.

I should also add that we had two problems over the few years we've owned it. One was with the valve and one with the handle. I can't remember the specifics on the valve, but the handle, after much use and abuse, broke off. In both cases, Coleman rush delivered replacement parts at no charge just on a phone call. Now that's customer service.

Do any of you propane/gas users grill underneath an enclosure? I will be doing some griiling under my new enclosure (see pic) and am worried about discoloring the ceiling. I am a charcoal guy but am considering a propane/gas unit if it will help avoid ruining the enclosure.

oh.. btw... you can see old trusty in the pic... the weber kettle is by far the best grill I have ever owned.

The weber kettle was also my favorite grill. Same one for 25+ years until I came accross the "Kamado".

Look at the sams club in your area for the stainless steel grill that lists for $598 with a rotisserie. It has moire cooking area than any other grill for hundreds less. They have propane and natural gas models of this unit available. If you do a search for "Sams Club Gas Grills" in yahoo, you can find many people who like the unit. The grill has a meter for telling you how much gas you have left, not to mention it lights itself.

Anybody ever use one of these?

Brinkmann 810-5000-0 All-in-One Cooker

Versatile outdoor cooking system. Can be used as LP gas smoker, gas grill, charcoal smoker, charcoal grill or gas cooker/fryer with 160,000 BTU adj. high-low burner. Two chrome plated steel grills for 50 lb. cooking capacity. Wooden handles, heat indicator and UL listed high pressure regulator with 4' hose. Propane tank not included.

I had an electric smoker but it was a pain, I am considering this gas smoker and for $99 with free shipping + a $20 GC to use at Amazon it seems like a decent deal.
Loose Cannon
Amazon.com has the weber genesis gold C for $499, no shipping, no sales tax. You also get a free hand held vacumn. What a deal.
Robyjo
Loose Cannon--I just ordered this over the weekend, but shipping wasn't free ($60), and no vacuum but $20 gift certificate. Any idea why there's a difference? I don't think amazon would charge or not charge shipping based on past buying habits, but....:hmmm:

Give Amazon a call and see if they will credit your account. If they refuse, ask them if your order has been shipped, if it hasn't cancel and re-order.

I concur, I have found them to be quite agreeable. Just before an order of mine shipped I saw the same item they were now selling it at a lower price. I asked them if it was possible to match it.
They said they were ready to ship and already charged my card, but would go ahead and credit the difference if that was ok with me.

Thanks fellas, but can someone do me a favor? Go to amazon, and see if you see the same deal that Loose Cannon sees...

I see: Weber Genesis Gold C, $499, no free shipping, $20 gift cert. for future purchase.
Let me know if you see what I see--and then I'll make the call.

I see exactly what you see.

Thanks Hammer--hope you're enjoying the Weber!

It was between this grill and a 'First Avenue' stainless @ costco for ~$100 less. I went with weber for the warranty and number of happy customers.

Folks seem to like the Genesis B as well...

Thanks again,

What is the best type of grill to cook on, ceramic coated, cast iron, or stainless steel grates?
Warzau
I like cast iron, sears quickly. But you got to remember to coat it with oil afterwards or it will rust much like a pan.

I really like cast iron! It only took about 5 good cookout to get my cast iron pretty well seasoned, I don't clean the grates after I cook, I clean them before I cook, and I have never seen rust.
Once seasoned not only do they keep from rusting, they are non stick and very easy to clean!

My "chrome" cheap grates on the old char broil grill flaked rust like a fish rubbed the wrong way.

I'm happy with stainless steel grates. Easy to take care of and cooks well. Granted, does not hold heat as well as cast iron...

I asked a fellow with the red vest about warranty, and he said costco would take it back for 1 year. After that, the burners are covered for 99 years. Honestly, knowing Costco, you're probably fine buying from there--they seem really good with quality issues.

No. As long as grill is properly preheated.

Also helps to wipe down the grates with some oil immediate prior to grilling.

What about these new porcelain coated cast iron grates? Anyone using them? There a few grills I really like, but they come with these grates. http://www.myownbbq.com/about/produ...ndard.php?id=21

Anybody have a Weber Q or Baby Q small propane grill ? I'm going to be doing a major tailgater in a few weeks and don't want the hassle/time of charcoal. I love my regular Weber grill and thought I might give one of these a whirl. There are some pretty cheap brand X's out there and I'd be curious to know if anybody has had success with those.

Most of those small propanes are a waste of $$. They are too small and don't put out enough BTU to be able to cook more than a couple of hot dogs or hamburgers.

I have a 22 inch Weber kettle that I have used for years of tailgating at Pats games and has fared quite well. Not really much of a hassle, aslong as you have space. I enclose it with a a huge plastic trash bag and a bunge cord around the legs to ensure that there is no mess in the X.

How do you like your Kamado ? I just noticed you mentioned having one ! Let me know !

Fabvsix,

As far as the Kamados go, I have two. A #7 and a #3. The #7 is the verastile one. Being used for low and slow cooking or Hi-temp steak charring. The #3 is used mainly for when it is a quick burger or other small quanities for just the wife and I. Went the gas route before, but that wasn't for me. I have converted my brother-n-law from gas to a Kamado. (He manages a propane store, even sold me a gas grill many years ago).

Just letting you all know that I am part of a company that is coming out with sports theme Bar-B-Q grills. Should be out early next year. The first roll-out will be just char. grills, then soon after the gas grills will come out. Each sport theme will have two different size grills, a small one for tailgating and then a larger one for your deck :)

Since we all own MDX's on here I assume we all will own my grills :2:

The following is the baseball grill with some information...

Baseball Grill
It functions as a sport themed design for sport lovers and their tailgate parties . It is made of cast aluminum materials. Its split-dome shape is covered in white enamel and painted with red stitching, resembling a giant baseball. Its sturdiness three tripod-style legs are wooded baseball bats with two mobilize wheels. The pan under the grill is shaped like a baseball gloves and is used for capturing burnt ashes from falling on the ground. This grill is available in a charcoal burning and the gas design is coming soon.

The baseball grill comes in two sizes:

14 inches - $49.99 projected
22 inches - $89.99 projected
