i have panasonic codeless phone (kx-tg2583w) which uses 3.6V/850mAh Ni-Cd (p-p510a).
went to radioshack. the guy gave me 3.6V/1200mAh NiMH saying that it will still work.
but will it work well?
850mAh vs. 1200mAh?
Ni-Cd vs. NiMH?

Not all chargers will work on both battery types. He should have told you that unless he knows for a fact it will. Somehow I seriously doubt he does.
You need to look at the instructions for your phone to see what TYPE of rechargeable battery your phone will accept. If you don't have a manual, go to www.panasonic.com and click your way to consumer products. They will likely have downloadable manuals and/or informaton under 'customer support'.
My first impression is it will not work. Most chargers that charge both types have a selector switch. Load and charge rates are different. Do NOT force it to work.
The greater capacity (1200 maH) is not important if it is the right battery TYPE and will fit.

| I stand corrected, according to the RS catalog, the one he selected is correct. But I would check further before assuming a NiMH will work in the same place as a NiCd. |

Most cordless phones slow charge and it is generally safe and effective to switch from a NiCad to a NiMh battery and to go up in capacity.
The higher mAh rating means the battery can provide power for a longer time; mAh=milliamp hour, 1200 mAh = 1,200 milliamps can be provided for an hour, 600 milliamps for 2 hours, 300 milliamps for 4 hours.
Higher mAh hour batteries can also accept a higher constant charge rate. The max constant charge rate is typically .1C or 1/10 of the capacity. Therefore the 1200mAh battery pack can be charged with up to 120mA while the original battery could only accept 85mA.
Fast chargers are where you get into trouble as they exceed the constant cgharge rate to reload the cell in minutes instead of hours. These smart chargers must monitor the voltage and current to assure it matches the rate the specific type of battery can accept and not over charge. |
